February is Heart Month.

KTBS 3 and Christus Health have joined together to keep you informed about heart disease, ways to prevent it, and treatment options. If you have a family history of the disease, you may do all the “right things” and still develop heart problems. The “right things” include getting 30 minutes of exercise every day, eating a healthy diet full of fruits and vegetables, stop smoking, or drinking alcohol in excess.

Heart disease can affect you at any age.

Heart disease can start young, so monitoring health conditions (such as diabetes and high blood pressure), and lifestyle choices (like diet and exercise) is important. CHRISTUS Health takes these risks to heart and remains a leader in the fight against heart disease, including early diagnosis and treatment. Doctors at Trinity Health Clinic say more young people are being diagnosed with heart disease. Take the free CHRISTUS Heart Risk Assessment and see if you are at risk.

You could have heart disease without even knowing.

For many, chest discomfort or a heart attack, is the first sign of heart disease. Health conditions, such as diabetes and high blood pressure, and lifestyle choices, like diet and exercise, can be key factors. Your health history makes a difference.

Lifestyle choices and habits including an unhealthy diet, alcohol use, smoking, and not enough exercise can lead to heart disease. Men and women are different.

Many people associate a heart attack with intense chest pains that cause one to clutch their chest. While that may be the way it’s often been portrayed, your symptoms may be different, yet you may still be having a heart attack. For instance, symptoms in women may often be jaw pain, back pain, or extreme fatigue.
