SAP Audio Info

What is “SAP”?

  • “SAP” stands for “Secondary Audio Program”. It is an alternative audio channel embedded within a broadcast signal that caters to special needs groups such as the visually impaired or Spanish speaking viewers. It is sometimes referred to as “MTS”, which stands for “Multichannel Television Sound”.

What special features will typically be heard in the “SAP” audio?

  • Most of the time the “SAP” audio will sound no different than the main audio program. Some network programs will have a narrator’s voice describing the characters and activities taking place on the screen. Other network programs, especially sporting events, will have Spanish dialogue. During severe weather and other emergency events the “SAP” audio will include a narrator’s voice relaying the details of those alerts and warnings.
