SHREVEPORT, LA. - In the midst of losing multiple complexes that offered affordable housing, Shreveport is working to slowly fill the need in the community.

“It's a really good thing that we're doing to create additional housing,” said Shreveport Mayor Tom Arceneaux.

Bayou Grande III will give Shreveport more than 100 affordable housing units.

“We're trying to make sure people don't pay any more than 40% of their income. So, it's typically for those people who are in the lower income brackets, but it is mixed use. So a few are market rate,” said Bobby Collins, Shreveport Housing Authority CEO,

There are 1-, 2- and 3-bedroom units.

“Particularly in this climate where we seem to be losing some affordable housing, we're 20,000 units short, and so for us to be able to bring 122 new affordable housing units to this community with this quality, we're just ecstatic,” said Collins.

It’s already full and has a waiting list of around 1,000 people, showing the massive need in the community.

“We only have the funding to help one out of four families who need more affordable housing,” said Collins.

“We should strive to create solid, affordable, clean, safe housing for as many people as we can. This is a great opportunity to do that,” said Arceneaux.

This development has two more phases planned and there are other affordable housing development plans in the works in the city.

“Well, we have a real need for affordable housing and really kind of a housing shortage. So we need to be adding to our housing stock. It's a great addition to it,” said Arceneaux.

People are expected to start moving in at the end of the month.
