A Bastion of Old World Charm
The arrival point of low-cost airlines with cheap flights to Milan, beautiful Bergamo is a tourist destination in its own right. In the foothills of the Alps, the city is spread over 2 levels. The main sights are in the upper level, or Città Alta, where sloping, cobbled streets open into pretty squares.
One such square is Piazza Vecchia with its sidewalk cafés, beautiful library and elegant Palazzo della Ragione. Through its arches is the Cappella Colleoni, an impressive chapel with an ornately sculpted façade and even more ornate interior. The nextdoor Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore has awe-inspiring frescoes.
Surrounding streets contain several Bergamo old town hotels and B&Bs, while surrounding the whole upper city are 17th-century Venetian walls. There are still remains of the Rocca, the castle that guarded them, and there is also a castle in San Vigilio, a hilltop village reached by a cable car.
A cable car also descends to the modern town, Città Bassa. Nearby is the Accademia Carrara, a fine art gallery, across from the GAMEC modern art museum. The Serie A club Atalanta FC plays in a stadium to the northeast, while southwest is the train station where buses to Orio al Serio Airport depart.

Citta Alta is beautiful as well as citta bassa. I didn’t expect bergamo to be so interesting. Food is very good as well as shopping. Do not miss Citta Alta 😍. We walked everywhere. We only used the funicular to go up citta alta and a bus to get from airport. Make sure you go up the castle when in Citta Alta as you get the most beautiful eye bird view of Bergamo. Don’t miss out on walking to one of the 4 Portas of Citta Alta. And if you want to try some delicious desserts go to Da Vittorio in Citta Alta, not cheap but delicious.AngieMalta - Scored 1010
A gem of a medieval citadel.
A gem of a medieval citadel. Among its highlights, just in the Città Alta: Il Palazzo della Ragione (The 'Palace of Reason' now how's that for an aptly named place?!), the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, the Colleoni Chapel, and the octogonal-shaped Battistero to name but a few.

Bergamo was the perfect family stay with interesting and historic sites to see, wonderful food and it's also very easy to get around using public transport. If you are more energetic, hiking and cycling is also a great option. The old town has so much history and some of the best views in the region.

Bergamo was beautiful transport links good for visiting other areas & cheap. You can eat or drink on any budget you just have to shop around Milan is amazing we visited twice once through the day & at dusk. We watched the fabulous Sunset from a bar at Lake Como. The Negative The airport bus was an absolute nightmare everyone pushing to get on, we patiently waited for the next one we were 1st in the queue the next bus came same again. I managed to get on but had to physically pull my daughter on as the transport worker had barred her way. When she got on the doors were closed trapping her luggage, we found this whole nightmare experience so off putting. How on earth the bus makes any money when this all for yourself attitude by the passengers pushing to get on cramming the buses. Visit Milan but Don't get the airport busTrishUnited Kingdom
