Petrushka is a retired Thoroughbred racehorse who was bred in Ireland and trained in the United Kingdom during a racing career which lasted from October 1999 to June 2001. She was named European Champion Three-Year-Old Filly at the 2000 Cartier Racing Awards. In her championship season she won four times from seven starts including Group One races is three countries. She won the Irish Oaks against other three-year-old fillies, before beating older fillies and mares in the Yorkshire Oaks in England and the Prix de l'Opéra in France. Petrushka was retired to stud after a single, unsuccessful run as a four-year-old.

Background

Petrushka, a dark chestnut filly with a small white star [1] was bred at the Airlie Stud, near Maynooth, County Kildare, sired by the Northern Dancer stallion Unfuwain out of the mare Ballet Shoes. [2] Unfuwain was a high-class middle-distance runner who won four Group races before siring the winners of more than five hundred winners at stud. [3] Ballet Shoes, who won two minor races, was a product of the Ballymacoll Stud and a half sister to the Champion Stakes winner Spectrum. As a descendant of the broodmare Sunny Valley, she was also closely related to Sun Princess. [4]

Petrushka's name derives from the ballet by Stravinsky, and was suggested by the name of her dam. An odd feature of the filly's name was the fact that the original Petrushka was male. [5]

Petrushka was sent as a yearling to the Goffs sales in October 1998 where she was bought for IR£110,000 by John Warren, the director [6] of the Highclere Thoroughbred Racing group. [7] Petrushka was sent into training with Sir Michael Stoute at Newmarket, Suffolk.

Racing career

1999: two-year-old season

Petrushka had only one race as a two-year-old, starting 5/1 second favourite in a maiden race at Leicester in October. She started slowly and took time to reach her full speed, but then made rapid progress to take the lead inside the final furlong and win "cleverly" by three quarters of a length. [8]

Despite the race's modest status, Petrushka's win attracted attention, and she went into the winter break regarded as "a serious filly" and a possible contender for the following year's Classics. [9]

2000: three-year-old season

Spring

Petrushka was originally considered more of a prospect for the one and a half mile Oaks, than the 1000 Guineas over one mile, but her improved home form suggested that she had the speed for the shorter classic. [10] On her three-year-old debut, Petrushka confirmed this impression in her first Group race, the Nell Gwyn Stakes over seven furlongs at Newmarket. She was sent off the 7/2 favourite, despite the presence in the field of the Cheveley Park Stakes winner Seazun. Held up in the early stages by Kieren Fallon, Petrushka moved up to take the lead a furlong out and pulled clear to beat Seazun by four lengths. [11] Fallon praised the filly saying that "she travels and she's got a serious turn of foot. You couldn't fault her in any way." Her odds for the Guineas and the Oaks were cut to 2/1 and 5/1 respectively. [10] Tony Morris, writing in the Racing Post , offered the opinion that "a star was born" in the Nell Gwyn. [5]

Less than three weeks later Petrushka was made 6/4 favourite against seventeen opponents in the 1000 Guineas. Petrushka was held up by Fallon, but was bumped when trying to make a forward move and was then unable to find space for a clear run. [12] She finished strongly, but was unable to reach the leaders, finishing third, more than four lengths behind Lahan.

Summer

Petrushka was then moved up in distance for the Oaks over one and a half miles at Epsom for which she was made 9/2 third favourite. Her second attempt at classic success ended in failure, however, as she finished a well-beaten fourth behind Love Divine, Kalypso Katie and Melikah.

From this point on, Petrushka showed rapid improvement. In July she was sent to The Curragh for the Irish Oaks, where she was ridden for the first time by Johnny Murtagh, Fallon having suffered a serious shoulder injury at Royal Ascot. [13] After tracking the leaders in the early stages, Petrushka took the lead in the straight and pulled well clear to win by five and a half lengths despite being eased down in the closing stages. She decisively reversed the Epsom for with Melikah, who finished second, and Kalypso Katie who was a further four and a half lengths back in fifth. [14] The Independent described it as "a slaughter", while Stoute contrasted the performance with her previous two runs by insisting that "this is the real Petrushka." [15]

The Yorkshire Oaks at York in August saw Petrushka matched against Love Divine for a second time, with the 1999 Champion Filly Ramruma also in the field. The meeting of the three outstanding fillies was highly anticipated as one of the "races of the season". [16] Petrushka was held up as usual, as Ramruma made the early running. Murtagh made his challenge in the straight, as Love Divine moved past Ramruma to take the lead. Petrushka produced an impressive "burst of speed" to catch Love Divine a furlong out and stayed on well to beat the Oaks winner by one and a quarter lengths. [17] After the race one of her owners suggested that both the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe and the Champion Stakes were being considered for her next race, with the Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf as her likely end of season target. [18]

Autumn

In October, Petrushka was sent to France for the Prix de l'Opéra at Longchamp. Although the opposition in the Group One race did not appear to be as strong as at York, the distance of 2000m was short of Petrushka's best and an unfavourable draw did not help her chances. [19] Murtagh predictably held the filly up before moving her to the wide outside to challenge in the straight. Petrushka produced a sustained run to take the lead inside the final 200m and win by three quarters of a length from the Prix Saint-Alary winner Reve d'Oscar. [20]

On her final start of the season, Petrushka was sent to Churchill Downs for the Breeders' Cup and was made 7/5 favourite for the Filly & Mare Turf. She was settled in sixth place by Murtagh before being moved out to challenge in the straight. She could make no progress however, and finished fifth of the fourteen starters behind Perfect Sting.

2001: four-year-old season

Petrushka was kept in training at four but had little chance to make an impact, despite positive reports concerning her form in training. [21] On her only start she finished fifth of the six runners behind Mutafaweq in the Coronation Cup at Epsom in June. [22]

Shortly after the race it was announced that she had sustained a tendon injury in her right foreleg and would be unable to race again. [23] At the end of June she was sold to the Darley Stud as a prospective broodmare for a reported £3,500,000. [24]

Assessment

At the Cartier Racing Awards for 2000, Petrushka was named European Champion Three-Year-Old Filly. [1] In the official International Classification, Petrushka was rated the second best European filly on a rating of 122, four pounds below the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe runner-up Egyptband. [25]

Michael Stoute called Petrushka "the best middle-distance filly I have trained." [23]

Stud career

Although Petrushka has been bred to many leading stallions including Rainbow Quest and Gone West, she has yet to produce a top class flat runner. Her son Parlour Games (by Monsun) is however a Grade I National Hunt winner having triumphed in the 2014 Challow Novices' Hurdle. [26]

Lahan was a British thoroughbred racehorse. In a brief career which lasted from October 1999 until May 2000 she ran four times and won three races. Highclere won one minor race as a two-year-old but improved to win the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket Racecourse and Prix de Diane at Chantilly. She later finished second to Dahlia in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. She retired at the end of the season to become a highly successful and influential broodmare.

Eswarah British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Eswarah is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning the 2005 Epsom Oaks. In a racing career which lasted from April to August 2005 the filly ran five times and won three races. Unraced as a two-year-old, Eswarah won her first three races as a three-year-old culminating with a win in the Classic Oaks over one and a half miles at Epsom. In her two subsequent appearances she finished eighth in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes and fourth in the Yorkshire Oaks.

Love Divine was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare best known for winning The Oaks in 2000. In a racing career which lasted from August 2000 to June 2001 the filly ran six times and won two races. After being beaten in her only race as a two-year-old, Love Divine won the Listed Lupe Stakes on her three-year-old debut and then won the Classic Oaks over one and a half miles at Epsom. She was beaten in her three remaining races, finishing second in the Yorkshire Oaks and fourth in both the Prix Vermeille and the Champion Stakes.

In a racing career which lasted from August 2001 until November 2003 she won six of her fifteen races including four at Group One level. Peeress (horse) British-bred Thoroughbred racehorse

Peeress is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from November 2003 until May 2007 raced eighteen times and won seven races, showing her best form over a distance of one mile. After finishing third in her only race as a two-year-old and won three times in the following year but appeared to be below top class. As a four-year-old she showed considerable improvement, winning the Windsor Forest Stakes in June and the Group One Sun Chariot Stakes in October. As a five-year-old she won a second race at the highest level, defeating male opposition in the Lockinge Stakes. In addition to her victories, she was placed in the Falmouth Stakes, Prix Jacques Le Marois and Matron Stakes. Peeress was retired to stud in 2007 and has made a successful start as a broodmare.

In a racing career which lasted from July 2003 until October 2006 she ran nineteen times, competing in four different countries and won six times as well as being placed on seven occasions. As a juvenile she graduated from a maiden race victory to record her biggest success in the Group One Fillies' Mile. In the following year she was the beaten favourite for the 1000 Guineas but won the Strensall Stakes. She remained in training for two more seasons, winning the Pipalong Stakes and two editions of the Blandford Stakes. Apart from her wins, she reached the frame in the Coronation Stakes, Pretty Polly Stakes, Nassau Stakes and Prix Jean Romanet. At the end of her racing career she became broodmare for her owner, the Cheveley Park Stud.

Listen is an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She showed her best form as a two-year-old in 2007 she won the Listed Saoire Stakes on her debut, finished second in both the Debutante Stakes and the Moyglare Stud Stakes and then recorded her biggest success in the Group One Fillies' Mile. Her subsequent racing career was compromised by injury and she made little impact in two races as a three-year-old. She has had some success as a broodmare in Japan.

Lailani is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. In a racing career which lasted from October 2000 until October 2001 she won seven of her ten races including Group One/ Grade I races in three countries. After showing little ability in two races as a juvenile she made relentless progress as a three-year-old, winning seven consecutive races including the Irish Oaks in Ireland, the Nassau Stakes in England and the Flower Bowl Invitational Stakes in the United States. After her retirement from racing she had some success as a broodmare.

Zahrat Dubai is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After running unplaced in her only race as a juvenile she wintered in Dubai and returned to Britain to record an impressive victory in the Musidora Stakes. She finished third when favourite for The Oaks but then defeated a strong field in the Nassau Stakes. She failed to reproduce her best form in two subsequent races and was retired at the end of the year. Zahrat Dubai became a broodmare and produced two winners from eleven foals.

Bolas was a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. After finishing unplaced on her only start as a two-year-old in 1993 she emerged as a top-class middle-distance filly in the following year, winning the Cheshire Oaks, Ribblesdale Stakes and Irish Oaks. She finished unplaced in her last two races and was retired from racing at the end of the season with a record of three wins in six starts. She was not successful as a broodmare, producing ony a few minor winners.

Ebadiyla was an Irish Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. Bred and owned by the Aga Khan an trained by John Oxx she was unraced as a two-year-old in 1996 but quickly established herself as a very promising filly in the following spring with an emphatic win on her racecourse debut followed by a narrow defeat in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial. After finishing sixth in The Oaks she won the Irish Oaks and ended her season with a six length win in the Prix Royal-Oak. She remained in training as a four-year-old but failed to win in three races although she did finish third in a strong renewal of the Coronation Cup. After her retirement from racing she had considerable success as a dam of winners.

Zee Zee Top is a British Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. She did not race until the autumn of her three-year-old season when she won a minor race on her debut and then finished second in the Severals Stakes. In the following year she showed top-class form to win the Middleton Stakes and Prix de l'Opéra as well as being placed in the Pretty Polly Stakes and Nassau Stakes. As a broodmare she produced Izzi Top and Jazzi Top.
