Darley swoops to secure Petrushka in pounds 3.5m deal.
CHAMPION filly Petrushka has been bought by Sheikh Mohammed's Darley Studoperation for a sum in excess of $5 million (pounds 3.5 million).
The sale, ensuring another huge payday for the Highclere Thoroughbred Racing syndicate, was claimed as a record for a broodmare prospect compared to those achieved at public auction.
The four-year-old was retired from racing earlier this month after suffering a tendon injury on her return to action in the Group 1 Vodafone Coronation Cup at Epsom.
Sheikh Mohammed's bloodstock adviser, John Ferguson, said: "Darley is absolutely delighted to own a filly of this exceptional calibre. It is very unusual for a filly to become available who has such a superb race record, pedigree and charisma-she's a queen."
The daughter of Unfuwain, champion three-year-old filly of last year, when she won three Group 1 races, was bred by Airlie Stud and is a half-
sister to Spectrum, sire of Golan.
Harry Herbert, the managing director of Highclere, said: "I could not be more thrilled for the share-owners that Petrushka has realised such a tremendous price. I understand that it is a world record for a filly, which is fantastic."
