Naga-L,also called Naga-1,is a light carrier rocket under development by the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT). It is designed to compete on the international market for small-lift launch vehicles. [1]
The project was unveiled on 14 October 2015 by Dr. Haoliang Yang during the 66th International Astronautical Congress in Jerusalem. [2] A first launch was planned for 2017. [1] In addition to its domestic Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in the Gobi Desert,CALT is considering potential launches of Naga-L from spaceports in Sweden (Esrange),Indonesia (Pameungpeuk) and Tanzania. [1]
Due to ITAR restrictions imposed by the United States which limit the distribution of US manufactured components with military applications,China can't import US produced satellites to its own territory, which prevents their Long March rockets from competing in the worldwide commercial launch services market. Naga-L would bypass these constraints by exporting the rockets instead of importing the satellites. [1]
Using components from the Long March rocket family, notably the YF-75 and YF-100 engines,Naga-L could deliver up to 1,600 kg (3,500 lb) to a 400-kilometre (250-mile) circular low Earth orbit from Lapan and 900 kg (2,000 lb) to a 400-km Sun-synchronous orbit from Esrange or Jiuquan. [2] Pricing would start at $10 million per mission. [1]
The Long March rockets are a family of expendable launch system rockets operated by the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation. The rockets are named after the Chinese Red Army's 1934–35 Long March military retreat during the Chinese Civil War.
The space program of the People's Republic of China is about the activities in outer space conducted and directed by the People's Republic of China. The roots of the Chinese space program trace back to the 1950s,when,with the help of the newly allied Soviet Union,China began development of its first ballistic missile and rocket programs in response to the perceived American threats. Driven by the successes of Soviet Sputnik 1 and American Explorer 1 satellite launches in 1957 and 1958 respectively,China would launch its first satellite,Dong Fang Hong 1 in April 1970 aboard a Long March 1 rocket, making it the fifth nation to place a satellite in orbit.
Shenzhou 6 was the second human spaceflight of the Chinese space program, launched on October 12,2005,on a Long March 2F rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center. The Shenzhou spacecraft carried a crew of Fèi Jùnlóng (费俊龙) and NièHǎishèng (聂海胜) for five days in low Earth orbit. It launched three days before the second anniversary of China's first human spaceflight,Shenzhou 5.
A small satellite, miniaturized satellite,or smallsat is a satellite of low mass and size, usually under 1,200 kg (2,600 lb). While all such satellites can be referred to as "small",different classifications are used to categorize them based on mass. Satellites can be built small to reduce the large economic cost of launch vehicles and the costs associated with construction. Miniature satellites, especially in large numbers, may be more useful than fewer, larger ones for some purposes –for example, gathering of scientific data and radio relay. Technical challenges in the construction of small satellites may include the lack of sufficient power storage or of room for a propulsion system.
The Tiangong program is China's space program to create a modular space station, comparable to Mir. This program is independent and unconnected to any other international space-active countries. The program is part of the China Manned Space Program that began in 1992. The core module of the Tiangong space station, the Tianhe was finally launched on 29 April 2021 marking the start of the Tiangong Space program deployment.
