Mahatma Gandhi University (MGU), commonly referred to as MG University, is a state owned public university headquartered in Kottayam in the state of Kerala, India. It was established on 2 October 1983 on Gandhi Jayanti day. [2] Mahatma Gandhi University (formerly Gandhiji University) has been approved by University Grants Commission (UGC) and accredited (A++) by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council of India. The university has around 300 affiliated colleges spread over five districts in central Kerala.
The National Institutional Ranking Framework, 2024 (NIRF) ranked Mahatma Gandhi University 37st among all universities in India. [3]
The university offers around 300 academic programmers (Bachelor's, Master's, Doctoral degrees) in the fields of Pure and Applied Sciences, Technology, Paramedical Studies, Nursing, Management, Law, Engineering, Gandhian Thought, development studies, International Relations, Inter disciplinary Integrated Master of Sciences, Politics, Physics, Nano Science, Disability Studies, Rehabilitation Sciences, Special Education, Psychology, Behavioral Medicine, Tourism, Journalism, Chemical Sciences, Polymer Engineering, Hospital Administration, Environmental Sciences, Disaster Management, Business Studies, Commerce, Economics, Arts, Pedagogical Studies, Hotel and Hospitality Management, Catering Science, Food and Nutrition, Computer Science, Biotechnology, Geoinformatics among others. Average annual student enrollment is around 40,000. [2]
Prof. C. T. Aravindakumar serves as the Vice-Chancellor of the University. The registrar is Prof. (Dr.) Prakashkumar B. and Dr. Sreejith C. M. holds the charge of Controller of Examinations. Biju Mathew acts as the Finance Officer.
The university is funded by the University Grants Commission and the Government of Kerala. [2] It is a member of the Association of Indian Universities and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. [2] Association of Commonwealth Universities represents over 480 universities from Commonwealth countries.
The university campus is in the Priyadarsini Hills, Athirampuzha 13 kilometers from Kottayam Railway Station and 4 kilometers from Ettumanoor. To reach the campus take the deviation from M.C. Road at Ettumanoor or Gandhi Nagar. The nearest airport is Cochin International Airport situated at Nedumbassery, Cochin which is about 79 km away. Private buses to Ernakulam starting from the Nagampadom bus stand at the northern end of the railway platform at Kottayam stop at the university. It is located 13 km away from the city of Kottayam.
Centre for Advanced Research in Library and Information Sciences (CARLIS) was established in 2010 for research on technologies that can transfer existing knowledge from traditional media to future proof digital media for the networked society.
CARLIS covers two main areas; Library Science and Information Science along with their applications using technologies developed in allied areas. CARLIS started Offering PhD programmes in 2010 and the areas of research are content management, digital archiving, multimedia resources, information administration, information economics, information infrastructures, IPR issues, knowledge warehousing, language technologies, Open Access protocols, resource sharing networks etc.
It is envisaged as a national centre and will have initially an Advisory Council with experts from India and abroad, an Honorary Director, experts from different areas in knowledge management as faculty. The research by the team associated to CARLIS has developed the Digital Library package with search mechanisms for Indian scripts used in Gandhi University on line Theses Library the first official Open Access Archive of PhD theses from Indian universities. Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee is a technical university located in Roorkee, Uttarakhand, India. It is the oldest engineering institution in India. It was founded as the College of Civil Engineering in 1847 during East India Company rule in India by James Thomason, the Lieutenant-Governor of the North-Western Provinces in which Roorkee was located; its purpose was to train officers and surveyors employed in the construction of the Ganges Canal. In 1854, after the completion of the canal and Thomason's death, it was renamed the Thomason College of Civil Engineering by Proby Cautley, the designer and projector of the canal. It was renamed University of Roorkee in 1949, and again renamed IIT Roorkee in 2001. The institution has 22 academic departments covering Engineering, Applied Sciences, Humanities & Social Sciences and Management programs with an emphasis on scientific and technological education and research.
Panjab University (PU) is an Indian collegiate public state university located in Chandigarh. Funded through both State and Union governments, it is considered a state university. It traces its origins to the University of the Punjab in Lahore, which was founded in 1882. After the partition of India, the university was established on 1 October 1947, and called East Punjab University. Jamia Millia Islamia is a public and research university located in Delhi, India. Originally established at Aligarh, United Provinces during the British Raj in 1920, it moved to its current location in Okhla in 1935. St. Berchmans College, most commonly known as SB College, is one of the first Autonomous Colleges in Kerala, India. Established in 1922, the college is considered to be one of the oldest institutions of higher education in India. The University Grants Commission (UGC) identified the College under its “College with Potential for Excellence” scheme. UGC and the Government of Kerala granted autonomy to the college on June 13, 2014. The college celebrated its centenary in the academic year of 2022.

Pondicherry University, also known as PU, is a central research university located in Kalapet, Pondicherry in Union Territory of Puducherry, India. It was established by an Act of Parliament in 1985 by the Department of Higher Education, Ministry of Education, Government of India. The Vice President of India is the Chancellor along with the Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry acting as the Chief Rector and the President of India is the Visitor of the university. The School of Medical Education is a constituent college under the Centre for Professional and Advanced Studies, established by the Government of Kerala. It was previously run by the Mahatma Gandhi University. It is a self-financing professional college, offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the medical and para-medical faculties. It was started at six centres with two centres each at Kottayam and Ernakulam, one centre at Angamaly, one centre at Cheruvandoor, Kottayam. All regional centres are managed by regional directors under the Director of SME. The office of director of SME is at SME main campus in Gandhi Nagar, Kottayam.
Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University is only Central University in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. The university is named after Babasaheb Ambedkar, social reformer, polymath and the architect of the Indian Constitution. The university was established on 10 January 1996. The university has a satellite campus at Amethi too, which was established in 2016.
V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai is the vice-chancellor of Somaiya Vidyavihar University and provost of Somaiya Vidyavihar, Pillai concurrently serving as the chancellor of the ICFAI University, Tripura. He was president of Mewar University, Chiittorgarh, Rajasthan, India (2016–2018).

NSS Hindu College, Changanassery (NSSHC) is one of the oldest and largest institutions of higher education of Nair Service Society was established in 1947 by Indian social reformer and freedom fighter Mannathu Padmanabha Pillai and is located on par with its central headquarters at Perunna, Changanassery. The college is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University, Kottayam and is re-accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) with 'A' grade.
Kottayam district is a centre of education in Kerala state. The Orthodox Theological Seminary at Chungam was the first institution to teach English in South India. It was founded in 1815 by Colonel John Monroe. The C.M.S High School was founded by the British missionary, Benjamin Bailey. The first college in Kerala state and the second established under British rule in India was the C.M.S. College (1840). Mahatma Gandhi University is located in Kottayam district. Later, the clergies of Catholic Church, on seeing a need for a English High School for students of Central Travancore, established a residential high school St Berchmans English High School in 1891 in Changanasserry under leadership of Fr Charles Lavigne, then vicariate apostolate of Kottayam. Even though it was started as a school for seminarians, it was made to public soon itself. In 1922, Venerable Mar Thomas Kurialacherry founded the famous SB College Changanassery for both intermediate students and scholars in Central Travancore. Today, both CMS College and SB College are recognised, for their legacy, as reputed and noted institutions of Kerala.
Ettumanoorappan College, in Ettumanoor, India was established in 1995, is owned by Ettumanoor Education Society, which is registered under the Charitable Societies Act 1985. The College is affiliated to Mahatma Gandhi University.
