Screening solidarity at Chennai Rainbow Film Festival

A rainbow flag stretched across the steps of the Alliance Franaise de Madras. But the colours didnt stop there. Inside, on the second floor, the auditorium came alive with a spectrum of stories flickering across the screen. It was a celebration of identities, a platform for unheard voices. From February 7-9, the Chennai Rainbow Film Festival (CRFF) 2025 brought together 55 films from nearly 25 countries. Welcoming the audience, director Sasha of CRFF said that the 2025 edition honours the beauty of diverse identities and the transformative impact of storytelling. Our goal is to cultivate an inclusive space that uplifts marginalised voices and fosters meaningful conversations, Sasha shared. This was followed by a classical dance performance by Rose Venkatesan and appearances from guests including Tamil Nadu MLA Mano Thangaraj and Thailands Consul General Racha Aribarg. CRFF brought a rich mix of regional and global narratives. Tamil films like Moondraam Paal and Sembula explored local queer experiences, while Still Your Child and Beyond the Binary in a Sacred Land widened the lens to international perspectives. The British short film Dawn won Best International Queer Film, while Sivashakthi , directed by Pavan, took home Best Tamil Short Film. Audience favourite Oh Butterfly secured the Audience Choice Award, Society Barks won Best Documentary, Yaarum Yaavarudanum was named Best One-Minute Short Film and Neela Nira Sooriyan bagged Best Feature-Length Film. Debating diversity Beyond the screen, the festival became a forum for critical discussions. The first panel, Beyond 377: Navigating LGBTQIA+ Rights and the Future moderated by activist Sharan Jayaraman, gathered legal experts, activists, and community leaders to discuss the realities after the decriminalisation of Section 377. Supreme Court lawyer Prabhakaran Ramachandran, journalist Priya Menon, Chennai Dost founder Vikranth Prasanna, Sahodarans general manager Jaya, and theatre artiste Srijith Sundaram shared insights on the ongoing fight for rights. The second panel examined LGBTQIA+ narratives in contemporary cinema and media. Filmmaker and actress Vanitha Vijayakumar, poet Manushyaputhran, filmmaker Nandini, actress Rekha Nair, and fashion choreographer Karun Raman reflected on the necessity of authentic queer representation. It raised questions like Who gets to tell queer stories? How can cinema move beyond stereotypes? And why do heterosexual actors continue to take on LGBTQIA+ roles? Honouring heroes The festival also recognised those shaping change. The Rainbow Ambassador Awards celebrated actress Shakeela, social media influencer Madan, and gender rights activist Diya Sana. Journalist Neelakandan, filmmaker Nandhini JS, and advocate Prabhakaran Ramachandran were also honoured for their contributions to LGBTQIA+ rights. The Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to trans activist Kiruba, whose decades of advocacy has transformed lives. This recognition is not just for me, but for the entire community, she said, reflecting on her journey especially with the Tamil Nadu AIDS Community initiative. Shakeela, receiving the Rainbow Ambassador Award, spoke about her deep ties to the community. This is my family. After losing my biological mother and feeling lost, Kirubamma stood by me and gave me a second chance at life. I have often said that award functions rarely invite me, so this recognition from my own people is truly special. She also called for more authentic representation in films, urging filmmakers to cast LGBTQ+ actors in queer roles. Diya Sana addressed the need to challenge internalised queerphobia, We need to overcome these fears within ourselves first. Only then can we show the world who we really are. Following a parai performance, the stage transformed for Muran, a thought-provoking play curated by activist Negha. With an all-queer cast, the skit unravelled the layers of everyday discrimination how a vegetarian easily finds a home while a queer person struggles, how skin colour dictates privilege, and how trans visibility doesnt always mean acceptance. It questioned queerphobia, the complexity of allyship, and the gaps that remain despite the 2014 NALSA judgment. As the curtains fell, it left behind a reminder of why queer stories matter. As long as there are voices to be heard, the colours will continue to shine.

Littering lands this band of robbers from Kochi in the soup

On December 27, 2024, a man riding a scooter in Kalady was attacked with pepper spray and robbed off Rs 20 lakh at knife point by two motorcycle-borne individuals. The whole operation was carried out after extensive planning and surveillance which stretched over three months. Yet, despite all their preparedness, the robbers were nabbed, along with eight others who assisted them in only two weeks. What helped the police, you ask? A can discarded on the roadside. The incident On the day, Davis, who works as a manager of a grocery wholesale firm, was travelling on his scooter to hand over the money to the business owner when he was intercepted by two motorcycle-borne individuals. Davis had with him two bags containing a total of Rs 32 lakh. The strangers first used pepper spray on his face and reached for the bag. When Davis resisted, they brandished a knife and stabbed him before grabbing the bags. However, in their haste to flee, one of the bags fell down and was promptly recovered by another company employee following Davis, and the police were informed. As soon as we learned about the incident, we rushed to the spot. On arriving there and examining the crime scene, it was evident that it was a well-planned robbery, likely done with the assistance of an insider. However, the most crucial evidence recovered from the place was the pepper spray can, says an officer who was part of the investigation. The probe Soon, Ernakulam Rural Police Chief Vaibhav Saxena formed a team with Perumbavoor Assistant Commissioner of Police Shakti Singh and Kalady SHO Anilkumar Meppilly. We formed teams. One tracked the pepper spray can. Another collected information from people who worked at the company. We also checked CCTV footage in the area, the officer reveals. The latter exercise proved to be fruitless as the route did not have many cameras and so, the motorcycles used by the assailants could not be found. However, the team tracking the pepper spray received vital information during the initial probe. The can had a helpline number on it which, when contacted, helped us find that the pepper spray was only sold online and from one particular shopping platform. After checking with the cans manufacturer and some assistance from the shopping platform, we tracked the buyer a person in Irinjalakuda. He had procured the pepper spray a few weeks before the incident, the officer says. Meanwhile, the team probing the possible involvement of an insider found that Anil Kumar T G, who had worked as the companys driver, had a criminal history and was lodged in Irinjalakuda jail in a criminal case. Even though he returned to work after being released from jail, he resigned a few months later. So we also started tracking Anil, the officer says. The pepper spray can was tracked to the residence of Anees in Irinjalakuda. It was a combo pack containing two cans. We carried out a surprise raid at the residence and recovered the pairing can and the box in which it was delivered. But his family members tipped him off and Anees went absconding, the officer explains. Connecting the dots However, the police did not have to wait long for success. The former employee Anil, during interrogation, divulged the entire robbery planning. Anil met Anees at Irinjalakuda sub-jail. There, he told Anees about the movement of cash at his workplace. He passed the entire information about the time, place and people involved. After being released from jail, Anees regularly reached Kalady and monitored Davis movement. He was joined by Vishnu Prasad alias Bomb Vishnu in executing the plan, the officer reveals. After Anil, police nabbed Firoz who arranged the motorcycle to carry out the robbery. Police also arrested Abhishek, Naveen and Salman who helped Anees to go into hiding. Anees father Ansari was arrested for tipping him off about police action. After a few days, the police tracked Anees to a resort in Wayanad and nabbed him. Vishnu, on his return journey from a holiday in Mysuru and Goa, was nabbed from Palani. During interrogation, the duo confessed. Apparently, they had divided the cash and parted ways. Anees also handed over a portion of the money he received to a woman named Shemu in Kodungallur. The money was recovered from her. The robbery was similar to the movie Sapthamashree Thaskaraha, starring Prithviraj, in which a group of persons who meet in jail joined together to carry out theft. However, police have cracked all such meticulously planned robberies in real life, the officer concludes.

MyFitnessPal is going to let AI play your nutrionist

MyFitnessPal, a popular, free food logging app, is getting into AI, specifically letting AI plan your meals for you . Following an acquisition of a startup called Intent, MyFitnessPal is adding an AI-generated meal planning feature for subscribers. The meal plans the updated MyFitnessPal app will be able to create take into account subscribers' goals, preferences, dietary habits, and routines, according to MyFitnessPal, via information the app already has on you, and what looks like a survey. The feature will also be part of an end-to-end experience. Any plan the app creates can be automatically translated into a grocery list for the next time you're at the store, or an order to a grocery delivery service if you'd prefer to do as little as possible. MyFitnessPal Given the sheer number of recipe and diet videos you can stumble upon across social media, trying to simplify the process of planning what you're going to eat makes sense. Using AI to do it does seem like it could have some unintended consequences, though. Knowing AI's ability to hallucinate, even if MyFitnessPal isn't generating recipes from scratch, it still feels like you could end up with some oddball meal combinations or incorrect grocery lists. The only way to know for sure is to try the AI meal planner for yourself, and if you're interested, you can already sign-up for a waitlist so you're able to try it out as soon as its available. MyFitnessPal says meal planning will officially launch in the spring in the US, UK, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and require joining a new $99.99 annual subscription tier called Premium+ to use. Cleaner One Pro Review: one of the best Mac cleaners

Macworld At a glance Expert's Rating Pros Quick, stable performance combined with a handy user interface made navigation and customization easy. The modules work as advertised, and handle duplicate files and cleanup well. Excellent Dropbox Scanner utility, which helps make it unique. Cons Some UI elements could be tightened and improved upon The Menu Bar option offers access to tools that the standard interface doesnt (namely the Dropbox Scanner tool), which is a bit awkward. Our Verdict Cleaner One Pro proves a handy utility wherein the included modules do their jobs well, while the unique Dropbox Scanner tool helps scrounge through and remove dozens of gigabytes of Dropbox file crud, making you wish this utility was available for other cloud-based services. Theres something good here, the price is right, and outside of a few user interface tweaks that could be perfected, this is worth downloading, installing, and looking into. Price When Reviewed This value will show the geolocated pricing text for product undefined Best Pricing Today Price When Reviewed $19.99 a year for 1 device (usually $24.99) Best Prices Today: Cleaner One Pro for Mac Retailer Price Trend Micro (1 year, 1 Mac) $19.99 View Deal Price comparison from over 24,000 stores worldwide Product Price Price comparison from Backmarket Cleaner One Pro for Mac is easy to download and install: just snag either the free copy or sign up for the tiered subscription, install the software, give it permission to access your hard drive, and youre set. See how Cleaner One Pro compares to other Mac Cleaners in our round-up of the Best Mac Cleaner software . The software requires Mac OS 10.12 (Sierra) or later to install and run, and is available in both free and paid subscription-based tiers. For the free tier, the software offers basic scanning and no user limits while requiring no credit or debit card to be stored with Trend Micro. The Basic tier, which currently retails for $19.99/19.99 a year (then $24.99/24.99 a year) requires a payment method to be stored with Trend Micro, offers support for one device, access to additional tools, and easy uninstallation if desired. The Advanced tier retails for $29.99/29.99 a year currently (then $59.99/46.99), requires a payment method to be stored with Trend Micro, and offers support for five devices, macOS and Windows support, quick uninstallation, and access to additional tools. There is a version on the Mac App Store that retails at $19.99/19.99 or $29.99/30.99 on a yearly subscription. Theres also an iOS version . Cleaner One Pros handy menu-based information tab offers a quick view of useful system information. Foundry Once installed and run, a clean, animated user interface invites you in. Like similar tools, Cleaner One Pro is designed around an assortment of modules along with its overarching Smart Scan, which looks over your storage, diagnostics, and applications, while the other modules (Junk Files, Big Files, Disk Map, Startup Manager, Duplicate Files, Similar Photos, App Manager, and File Shredder) attend to their own tasks when activated. The modules, in turn, performed well during testing, and were able to locate large files and duplicates that could be disposed of. The Smart Scan, as expected, goes through a general overview of storage, diagnostics, and applications to suss out garbage files and make recommendations as to what tools to use. 6.66GB of duplicate photos were just deleted via the Similar Photos module. Foundry The Junk Files module hunts down the usual system logs, uninstalled application leftovers, language files, unused disk images, installer packages, browser caches, broken login items, old updates, and document old versions, but in this case surprised me in locating about a dozen World War II Online update installers thatd been cached and helped clear 40.3GB of drive space. The Disk Map module worked as expected, offering a nice layout and concise display of whats eating up your Macs hard drive. The Startup Manager offered an excellent peek under your Macs hood, especially in terms of launch agents, the module allowing you to activate or deactivate individual components. The application also offers an interesting Adware Startup Items option, which picks out potential adware that might need to be deactivated. The Duplicate Files, App Manager, and File Shredder modules work as expected, File Shredder allowing you to drop files and folders in as needed and securely deleting them, even if theres no way to gauge exactly how secure the delete process happened to be. If there was one element that caught my eye, it was the Dropbox Scanner tool, which hooked into my Dropbox account, compared files and file sizes, and offered a quick means of cleaning up larger files, which helped clear dozens of gigabytes of space and proved to be pretty unique as a feature. Other nice touches included easy access to technical support to quickly file a ticket, report a bug, or suggest a new feature, and the Smart Scan feature helpfully points out whether or not a macOS update is available for download and installation, which is a helpful add-on. Customizing the Smart Scan module and choosing which tests to perform. Foundry Yes, there are a few things that could stand to be improved upon in Cleaner One Pro, and the application doesnt quite know if it wants to be primarily accessed through the macOS Menu Bar or the standard home screen. The impressive Dropbox Scanner tool proves accessible only through the Menu Bar, which is a bit of an odd choice. I would have liked to have seen some user interface changes, such as a Select All checkbox to quickly encapsulate a vast number of files that need to be removed. It may be a feature or a bug, but the activation key, once purchased, cant be copied and pasted and needs to be entered manually. An actual free trial would be nice to see as opposed to a promised 30-day money-back guarantee, but Trend Micros tech support got back to requests quickly when reached out to, which is a bit more personal attention than expected from a giant software company. Finally, the More Tools module simply hooks into advertising for Trend Micros additional utilities (Antivirus One, Unzip One, Trend Micro VPN, and AdBlock One), which feels like necessary baggage but still a bit irksome. Should you buy Cleaner One Pro for Mac? Trend Micro has created an excellent utility that achieves its goal of standing out in a crowded Mac utility marketplace. Whats present with Cleaner One Pro is useful, lives up to its description, and an elegant user interface makes it easy to navigate the program, customize settings, quickly view extraneous apps, files, and login items, and prune your Mac down more effectively. Its also to Cleaner One Pros credit that the application doesnt try to make itself a mega-suite and do everything under the sun, including antiviral scanning and protection or act as a VPN, although Trend Micro readily advertises those products for sale. Cleaner One Pro offers a useful set of Mac cleaning tools for a good price, and if youre looking for something reliable in this field, its worth your consideration.

Apple Intelligences biggest problem isnt the Intelligenceits Apple

Macworld Everyone knows that Apple is playing catch-up when it comes to Apple Intelligence. The companys shipping AI models seem to be way behind the cutting edge, as OpenAI grows, Google pushes forward, and newcomers hit the scene. Im sure Apple is pouring everything it can into building better, more modern models, and well hear about that effort in detail in June at WWDC. But what troubles me most about the Apple Intelligence rollout isnt that Apple was caught flatfooted by the AI hype train and is struggling to catch upits that Apples implementation of AI features also feels slapdash and rushed. Apple doesnt have to end up with the best large language model around to win the AI wars. It can be in the ballpark of the best or partner with the leaders to get what it needs. But it cant fail at the part that is uniquely Apple: Making those features a pleasure to use, in the way we all expect from Apple. Right now, thats where Apple is failing. Apples best shot at AIs worst The worst thing about AI is that since much of it springs from the concept of a text-based language model, AI interfaces tend to be empty text boxes that you have to type something into. I cant believe were back here. This is serious pre-1984 thinking, 40 years after Apple put a stake in the heart of the command-line interface. Giving users an empty text box and expecting them to know what to say to get the result they want is a colossal user-interface failure. An empty text box is cruel. (And no, having to carefully issue abstract commands via voice is not a good alternative, nor is forcing users to laboriously correct mistaken output with additional text entry.) The future of AI functionality needs to be built on a good user interface design that offers simple visual tools to step users through the process. This is where Apple can really make its mark, and Im happy to report that in one area, it has really done it: image generation. Image Playground may make some questionable images, but Apple is on the right track with the apps UI. Foundry Im not a fan of the images Image Playground generates, but I have to give Apple credit for the interface its placed on top of its image-generation model. When you use Image Playground or create a Genmoji, Apple offers a proper interface thatwhile including a text box for suggestionsalso offers a bunch of options you can scroll through and tap to add different suggestions and styles to the party. The stuff you enter in the text box is tokenized into floating elements. Its an actual interface , and it works pretty well. Users dont need to know about how the image-generation model is being run beneath the surface. Just let us make pictures. And then theres the rest The image-generation interface really is Apples best take on AI design. Unfortunately, other Apple Intelligence interface elements dont fare so well. The truth is, I dont think macOS 15 and iOS 18 have exposed how far Apple is behind in AI as much as its exposed how short a time Apples designers had to create proper interfaces for all of that AI. Lets take Writing Tools, which can proofread, rewrite, and modify text. On the Mac, Apples APIs and apps have an existing system of spelling and grammar checking that offer a floating palette that lets you navigate through all the errors. On all its platforms, misspellings and grammar issues can be underlined and then tapped on for corrections. Writing Tools seems to have been grafted on in parallel with this system. As Pixel Envys Nick Heer points out , it manifests as a popover, [which] works a little bit like a contextual menu and a little like a panel while doing the job of neither very successfully. Not only is the Writing Tools interface brittle and messy, but its not integrated into any other text tools that Apple has built into its operating systems over the years! This is where we can really see how Apples engineers and designers had to rush to implement as many Apple Intelligence features as possible for year one. AI-based writing tools should have been integrated into Apples overall approach to spelling and grammar, but instead theyve been shoved into their own silo. As a result, they lack a lot of the niceties one might expectfor example, when you ask Writing Tools to proofread or rewrite something, it just changes your text and then lets you toggle between the edited and unedited text. AI-based writing tools should have been integrated into Apples overall approach to spelling and grammar, but instead theyve been shoved into their own silo. Contrast that with an existing, AI-powered proofing app, Grammarly , which (even in its very limited Grammarly Desktop version on Mac) underlines errors in your text editor of choice, displays suggested changes when you click or tap, and displays paragraph-long edits with strikethrough and color highlighting to indicate changes. Hammer now, hammer later The famous saying is that when you have a hammer, every problem looks like a nail. Its clear that when Apple began its crash program to add Apple Intelligence to its operating systems, the goal was not to solve user problems but to insert AI features anywhere it could. This is the antithesis of Apples usual philosophy of solving problems rather than adopting the latest technology, and it has burned the company in some high-profile ways. The most obvious is its use of an LLM to summarize notifications, including news updates. Many apps (including news apps) send way too many notifications, and it would be helpful to users if their phones could alleviate the pain. Im sure Apples software people have been discussing this issue for years. There are several ways they could have approached the problem, including building a new interface element for the Notification Center that rolled up multiple bubbles into one. A priority score attached to each notification would allow Apple to select the top ones to display, with a new interface to unroll the rest. There are many ways to solve this problemnot just for news apps but also for other kinds of apps like security cameras and smart locks. However, most of them would be complex and involve modifying the Notification Center interface or Apples push-notification cloud service. They might even require developers of third-party Apps to adopt them. In short, it would take time. Instead, Apple rushed: Given the drive to ship AI features, it shoved a nosy summarization LLM into Notification Center. It was probably the wrong tool for the job, but all Apples engineers were given was a hammer. Were not too many months away from the unveiling of the next round of Apple Intelligence features. Will Apple continue its reckless, messy sprint to catch up, or will it try to be a little more measured? This first wave of Apple Intelligence features are so rough, they desperately need some polish and reconsideration. Will they get it? Or will we be living with half-baked Writing Tools for years because the parties responsible have moved on to the next hurried feature drop? The implementation of Image Playground gives me some hope that Apple still understands its biggest advantage when it comes to building AI: a focus on making users lives easier. But the rest of Apple Intelligence has me quite concerned that were in for a messy few years.

The 6 best Mint alternatives to replace the budgeting app that shut down

As a long-time Mint user, I was frustrated to say the least when news broke at the end of 2023 that Intuit would shut Mint down . I, like millions of others, enjoyed how easily Mint allowed us to track all accounts in one place and monitor credit scores. I also used it regularly to track spending, set goals like pay my mortgage down faster and with general money management. So I set out to find the best Mint alternatives in the wake of its disappointing demise. I gave Credit Karma , Intuits other financial app, a try but found it to be a poor Mint substitute. The following guide lays out my experience testing some of the most popular Mint replacement apps available today in search of my next budgeting app. Our pick for best Mint alternative remains Quicken Simplifi , even months after the Mint shutting down, thanks to its easy to use app, good income and bill detection and its affordable price. But there are plenty of other solid options out there for those with different needs. If youre also on the hunt for a budgeting app to replace Mint, we hope these details can help you decide which of the best budgeting apps out there will be right for you. Table of contents Best Mint alternatives in 2025 What is Plaid and how does it work? My top Mint alternative picks How to import your financial data from the Mint app How we tested Mint alternatives What about Rocket Money? Best Mint alternatives in 2025 No pun intended, but what I like about Quicken Simplifi is its simplicity. Whereas other budgeting apps try to distinguish themselves with dark themes and customizable emoji, Simplifi has a clean user interface, with a landing page that you just keep scrolling through to get a detailed overview of all your stats. These include your top-line balances; net worth; recent spending; upcoming recurring payments; a snapshot of your spending plan; top spending categories; achievements; and any watchlists youve set up. You can also set up savings goals elsewhere in the app. I also appreciate how it offers neat, almost playful visualizations without ever looking cluttered. I felt at home in the mobile and web dashboards after a day or so, which is faster than I adapted to some competing services (Im looking at you, YNAB and Monarch). Getting set up with Simplifi was mostly painless. I was particularly impressed at how easily it connected to Fidelity; not all budget trackers do, for whatever reason. This is also one of the only services I tested that gives you the option of inviting a spouse or financial advisor to co-manage your account. One thing I would add to my initial assessment of the app, having used it for a few months now: I wish Simplifi offered Zillow integration for easily tracking your home value (or at least a rough estimate of it). Various competitors including Monarch Money and Copilot Money work with Zillow, so clearly there's a Zillow API available for use. As it stands, Simplifi users must add real estate manually like any other asset. Dana Wollman / Engadget In practice, Simplifi miscategorized some of my expenses, but nothing out of the ordinary compared to any of these budget trackers. As youre reviewing transactions, you can also mark if youre expecting a refund, which is a unique feature among the services I tested. Simplifi also estimated my regular income better than some other apps I tested. Most of all, I appreciated the option of being able to categorize some, but not all, purchases from a merchant as recurring. For instance, I can add my two Amazon subscribe-and-saves as recurring payments, without having to create a broad-strokes rule for every Amazon purchase. The budgeting feature is also self-explanatory and can likely accommodate your preferred budgeting method. Just check that your regular income is accurate and be sure to set up recurring payments, making note of which are bills and which are subscriptions. This is important because Simplifi shows you your total take-home income as well as an income after bills figure. That number includes, well, bills but not discretionary subscriptions. From there, you can add spending targets by category in the planned spending bucket. Planned spending can also include one-time expenditures, not just monthly budgets. When you create a budget, Simplifi will suggest a number based on a six-month average. Not dealbreakers, but two things to keep in mind as you get started: Simplifi is notable in that you cant set up an account through Apple or Google. There is also no option for a free trial, though Quicken promises a 30-day money back guarantee. Monarch Money grew on me. My first impression of the budgeting app, which was founded by a former Mint product manager, was that it's more difficult to use than others on this list, including Simplifi, NerdWallet and Copilot. And it is. Editing expense categories, adding recurring transactions and creating rules, for example, is a little more complicated than it needs to be, especially in the mobile app. (My advice: Use the web app for fine-tuning details.) Monarch also didnt get my income right; I had to edit it. Once youre set up, though, Monarch offers an impressive level of granularity. In the budgets section, you can see a bona fide balance sheet showing budgets and actuals for each category. You'll also find a forecast, for the year or by month. And recurring expenses can be set not just by merchant, but other parameters as well. For instance, while most Amazon purchases might be marked as shopping, those for the amounts of $54.18 or $34.18 are definitely baby supplies, and can be automatically marked as such each time, not to mention programmed as recurring payments. Weirdly, though, theres no way to mark certain recurring payments as bills, specifically. Dana Wollman / Engadget Not long after I first published this story in December 2023, Monarch introduced a detailed reporting section where you can create on-demand graphs based on things like accounts, categories and tags. That feature is available just on the web version of the app for now. As part of this same update, Monarch added support for an aggregator that makes it possible to automatically update the value of your car. This, combined with the existing Zillow integration for tracking your home value, makes it easy to quickly add a non-liquid asset like a vehicle or real estate, and have it show up in your net worth graph. The mobile app is mostly self-explanatory. The main dashboard shows your net worth; your four most recent transactions; a month-over-month spending comparison; income month-to-date; upcoming bills; an investments snapshot; a list of any goals youve set; and, finally, a link to your month-in-review. That month-in-review is more detailed than most, delving into cash flow; top income and expense categories; cash flow trends; changes to your net worth, assets and liabilities; plus asset and liability breakdowns. In February 2024, Monarch expanded on the net worth graph , so that if you click on the Accounts tab you can see how your net worth changed over different periods of time, including one month, three months, six months, a year or all time. On the main screen, youll also find tabs for accounts, transactions, cash flow, budget and recurring. Like many of the other apps featured here, Monarch can auto-detect recurring expenses and income, even if it gets the category wrong. (They all do to an extent.) Expense categories are marked by emoji, which you can customize if youre so inclined. Monarch Money uses a combination of networks to connect with banks, including Plaid, MX and Finicity, a competing network owned by Mastercard. (I have a quick explainer on Plaid, the industry standard in this space, toward the end of this guide.) As part of an update in late December, Monarch has also made it easier to connect through those other two networks, if for some reason Plaid fails. Similar to NerdWallet, I found myself completing two-factor authentication every time I wanted to get past the Plaid screen to add another account. Notably, Monarch is the only other app I tested that allows you to grant access to someone else in your family likely a spouse or financial advisor. Monarch also has a Chrome extension for importing from Mint, though really this is just a shortcut for downloading a CSV file, which youll have to do regardless of where you choose to take your Mint data. Additionally, Monarch just added the ability to track Apple Card, Apple Cash, and Savings accounts, thanks to new functionality brought with the iOS 17.4 update. It's not the only one either; currently, Copilot and YNAB have also added similar functionality that will be available to anyone with the latest versions of their respective apps on a device running iOS 17.4. Instead of manually uploading statements, the new functionality allows apps like Monarch's to automatically pull in transactions and balance history. That should make it easier to account for spending on Apple cards and accounts throughout the month. Monarch also recently launched investment transactions in beta. It also says bill tracking and an overhauled goals system are coming soon. Monarch hasn't provided a timeline for that last one, except to say that the improved goals feature is coming soon. Copilot Money might be the best-looking budgeting app I tested. It also has the distinction of being exclusive to iOS and Macs at least for now. Andres Ugarte, the companys CEO, has publicly promised that Android and web apps are coming soon. But until it follows through, I cant recommend Copilot for most people with so many good competitors out there. Copilot Money for Web and Android! Thanks to the support from our users, and the overwhelming positive reception we're seeing from folks migrating from Mint, we can now say that we'll be building @copilotmoney for Web and Android with a goal to launch in 2024. We'll continue to Andres Ugarte (@chuga) November 15, 2023 There are other features that Copilot is missing, which Ill get into. But it is promising, and one to keep an eye on. Its just a fast, efficient, well designed app, and Android users will be in for a treat when theyll finally be able to download it. It makes good use of colors, emoji and graphs to help you understand at a glance how youre doing on everything from your budgets to your investment performance to your credit card debt over time. In particular, Copilot does a better job than almost any other app of visualizing your recurring monthly expenses. Behind those punchy colors and cutesy emoji, though, is some sophisticated performance. Copilots AI-powered Intelligence gets smarter as you go at categorizing your expenses. (You can also add your own categories, complete with your choice of emoji.) Its not perfect. Copilot miscategorized some purchases (they all do), but it makes it easier to edit than most. On top of that, the internal search feature is very fast; it starts whittling down results in your transaction history as soon as you begin typing. Dana Wollman / Engadget Copilot is also unique in offering Amazon and Venmo integrations, allowing you to see transaction details. With Amazon, this requires just signing into your Amazon account via an in-app browser. For Venmo, you have to set up fwd@copilot.money as a forwarding address and then create a filter, wherein emails from venmo@venmo.com are automatically forwarded to fwd@copilot.money. Like Monarch Money, you can also add any property you own and track its value through Zillow, which is integrated with the app. While the app is heavily automated, I still appreciate that Copilot marks new transactions for review. Its a good way to both weed out fraudulent charges, and also be somewhat intentional about your spending habits. Like Monarch Money, Copilot updated its app to make it easier to connect to banks through networks other than Plaid. As part of the same update, Copilot said it has improved its connections to both American Express and Fidelity which, again, can be a bugbear for some budget tracking apps. In an even more recent update, Copilot added a Mint import option, which other budgeting apps have begun to offer as well. Because the app is relatively new (it launched in early 2020), the company is still catching up to the competition on some table-stakes features. Ugarte told me that his team is almost done building out a detailed cash flow section as well. On its website , Copilot also promises a raft of AI-powered features that build on its current Intelligence platform, the one that powers its smart expense categorization. These include smart financial goals, natural language search, a chat interface, forecasting and benchmarking. That benchmarking, Ugarte tells me, is meant to give people a sense of how theyre doing compared to other Copilot users, on both spending and investment performance. Most of these features should arrive in the new year. Copilot does a couple interesting things for new customers that distinguish it from the competition. Theres a demo mode that feels like a game simulator; no need to add your own accounts. The company is also offering two free months with RIPMINT a more generous introductory offer than most. When it finally does come time to pony up, the $7.92 monthly plan is cheaper than some competing apps, although the $95-a-year-option is in the same ballpark. You may know NerdWallet as a site that offers a mix of personal finance news, explainers and guides. I see it often when I google a financial term I dont know and sure enough, its one of the sites Im most likely to click on. As it happens, NerdWallet also has the distinction of offering one of the only free budgeting apps I tested. In fact, there is no paid version; nothing is locked behind a paywall. The main catch: There are ads everywhere. To be fair, the free version of Mint was like this, too. Even with the inescapable credit card offers, NerdWallet has a clean, easy-to-understand user interface, which includes both a web and a mobile app. The key metrics that it highlights most prominently are your cash flow, net worth and credit score. (Of note, although Mint itself offered credit score monitoring, most of its rivals do not.) I particularly enjoyed the weekly insights, which delve into things like where you spent the most money or how much you paid in fees and how that compares to the previous month. Because this is NerdWallet, an encyclopedia of financial info, you get some particularly specific category options when setting up your accounts (think: a Roth or non-Roth IRA). Dana Wollman / Engadget As a budgeting app, NerdWallet is more than serviceable, if a bit basic. Like other apps I tested, you can set up recurring bills. Importantly, it follows the popular 50/30/20 budgeting rule, which has you putting 50% of your budget toward things you need, 30% toward things you want, and the remaining 20% into savings or debt repayments. If this works for you, great just know that you cant customize your budget to the same degree as some competing apps. You cant currently create custom spending categories, though a note inside the dashboard section of the app says youll be able to customize them in the future. You also cant move items from the wants column to needs or vice versa but In the future, you'll be able to move specific transactions to actively manage what falls into each group. A NerdWallet spokesperson declined to provide an ETA, though. Lastly, its worth noting that NerdWallet had one of the most onerous setup processes of any app I tested. I dont think this is a dealbreaker, as youll only have to do it once and, hopefully, you arent setting up six or seven apps in tandem as I was. What made NerdWallets onboarding especially tedious is that every time I wanted to add an account, I had to go through a two-factor authentication process to even get past the Plaid splash screen, and thats not including the 2FA I had set up at each of my banks. This is a security policy on NerdWallets end, not Plaids, a Plaid spokesperson says. Precisely because NerdWallet is one of the only budget trackers to offer credit score monitoring, it also needs more of your personal info during setup, including your birthday, address, phone number and the last four digits of your social security number. Its the same with Credit Karma, which also does credit score monitoring. Related to the setup process, I found that NerdWallet was less adept than other apps at automatically detecting my regular income. In my case, it counted a large one-time wire transfer as income, at which point my only other option was to enter my income manually (which is slightly annoying because I would have needed my pay stub handy to double-check my take-home pay). YNAB is, by its own admission , different from anything youve tried before. The app, whose name is short for You Need a Budget, promotes a so-called zero-based budgeting system, which forces you to assign a purpose for every dollar you earn. A frequently used analogy is to put each dollar in an envelope; you can always move money from one envelope to another in a pinch. These envelopes can include rent and utilities, along with unforeseen expenses like holiday gifts and the inevitable car repair. The idea is that if you budget a certain amount for the unknowns each month, they wont feel like theyre sneaking up on you. Importantly, YNAB is only concerned with the money you have in your accounts now. The app does not ask you to provide your take-home income or set up recurring income payments (although there is a way to do this). The money you will make later in the month through your salaried job is not relevant, because YNAB does not engage in forecasting. The app is harder to learn than any other here, and it requires more ongoing effort from the user. And YNAB knows that. Inside both the mobile and web apps are links to videos and other tutorials. Although I never quite got comfortable with the user interface, I did come to appreciate YNABs insistence on intentionality. Forcing users to draft a new budget each month and to review each transaction is not necessarily a bad thing. As YNAB says on its website, Sure, youve got pie charts showing that you spent an obscene amount of money in restaurants but youve still spent an obscene amount of money in restaurants. I can see this approach being useful for people who dont tend to have a lot of cash in reserve at a given time, or who have spending habits they want to correct (to riff off of YNABs own example, ordering Seamless four times a week). My colleague Valentina Palladino, knowing I was working on this guide, penned a respectful rebuttal , explaining why shes been using YNAB for years. Perhaps, like her, you have major savings goals you want to achieve, whether its paying for a wedding or buying a house. I suggest you give her column a read. For me, though, YNABs approach feels like overkill. PocketGuard is one of the only reputable free budget trackers I found in my research. Just know its far more restricted at the free tier than NerdWallet or Mint. In my testing, I was prompted to pay after I attempted to link more than two bank accounts. So much for free, unless you keep things simple with one cash account and one credit card. When it comes time to upgrade to PocketGuard Plus, you have three options: pay $7.99 a month, $34.99 a year or $79.99 for a one-time lifetime license. That lifetime option is actually one of the few unique selling points for me: Im sure some people will appreciate paying once and never having to, uh, budget for it again. From the main screen, youll see tabs for accounts, insights, transactions and the Plan, which is where you see recurring payments stacked on top of what looks like a budget. The main overview screen shows you your net worth, total assets and debts; net income and total spending for the month; upcoming bills; a handy reminder of when your next paycheck lands; any debt payoff plan you have; and any goals. Dana Wollman / Engadget Like some other apps, including Quicken Simplifi, PocketGuard promotes an after bills approach, where you enter all of your recurring bills, and then PocketGuard shows you whats left, and thats what youre supposed to be budgeting: your disposable income. Obviously, other apps have a different philosophy: take into account all of your post-tax income and use it to pay the bills, purchase things you want and maybe even save a little. But in PocketGuard, its the in your pocket number thats most prominent. To PocketGuards credit, it does a good job visualizing which bills are upcoming and which ones youve already paid. PocketGuard has also publicly committed to adding some popular features. These include rollover budgeting, categorization rules and shared household access. Dana Wollman / Engadget Although PocketGuards UI is easy enough to understand, it lacks polish. The accounts tab is a little busy, and doesnt show totals for categories like cash or investments. Seemingly small details like weirdly phrased or punctuated copy occasionally make the app feel janky. More than once, it prompted me to update the app when no updates were available. The web version, meanwhile, feels like the mobile app blown up to a larger format and doesnt take advantage of the extra screen real estate. Of note, although PocketGuard does work with Plaid, its primary bank-connecting platform is actually Finicity. Setting up my accounts through Finicity was mostly a straightforward process. I did encounter one hiccup: Finicity would not connect to my SoFi account. I was able to do it through Plaid, but PocketGuard doesnt make it easy to access Plaid in the app. The only way, as far as I can tell, is to knowingly search for the name of a bank that isnt available through Finicity, at which point you get the option to try Plaid instead. Like I said: the experience can be janky. What is Plaid and how does it work? Each of the apps I tested uses the same underlying network, called Plaid, to pull in financial data, so its worth explaining in its own section what it is and how it works. Plaid was founded as a fintech startup in 2013 and is today the industry standard in connecting banks with third-party apps. Plaid works with over 12,000 financial institutions across the US, Canada and Europe. Additionally, more than 8,000 third-party apps and services rely on Plaid, the company claims . To be clear, you dont need a dedicated Plaid app to use it; the technology is baked into a wide array of apps, including the budget trackers I tested for this guide. Once you find the add an account option in whichever one youre using, youll see a menu of commonly used banks. Theres also a search field you can use to look yours up directly. Once you find yours, youll be prompted to enter your login credentials. If you have two-factor authentication set up, youll need to enter a one-time passcode as well. As the middleman, Plaid is a passthrough for information that may include your account balances, transaction history, account type and routing or account number. Plaid uses encryption, and says it has a policy of not selling or renting customer data to other companies. However, I would not be doing my job if I didnt note that in 2022 Plaid was forced to pay $58 million to consumers in a class action suit for collecting more financial data than was needed. As part of the settlement, Plaid was compelled to change some of its business practices. In a statement provided to Engadget, a Plaid spokesperson said the company continues to deny the allegations underpinning the lawsuit and that the crux of the non-financial terms in the settlement are focused on us accelerating workstreams already underway related to giving people more transparency into Plaids role in connecting their accounts, and ensuring that our workstreams around data minimization remain on track. My top Mint alternative picks To conclude, you might be wondering what app I decided on for myself after all of this research. The answer is actually two apps: Quicken Simplifi, my overall top pick, and Copilot Money. For now, I am actively using both apps and still deciding, long-term, which I feel more comfortable with. I tend to prefer Copilot's fast, colorful user interface, but as I explained above, it's too lacking in table-stakes features for me to go so far as to name it the best overall option. How to import your financial data from the Mint app Mint users should consider getting their data ready to migrate to their new budgeting app of choice soon. Unfortunately, importing data from Mint is not as easy as entering your credentials from inside your new app and hitting import. In fact, any app that advertises the ability to port over your stats from Mint is just going to have you upload a CSV file of transactions and other data. To download a CSV file from Mint, do the following: Sign into Mint.com and hit Transactions in the menu on the left side of the screen. Select an account, or all accounts . Scroll down and look for export [number] transactions in smaller print. Your CSV file should begin downloading. Note: Downloading on a per-account basis might seem more annoying, but could help you get set up on the other side, if the app youre using has you importing transactions one-for-one into their corresponding accounts. How we tested Mint alternatives Before I dove into the world of budgeting apps, I had to do some research. To find a list of apps to test, I consulted trusty ol Google (and even trustier Reddit); read reviews of popular apps on the App Store; and also asked friends and colleagues what budget tracking apps they might be using. Some of the apps I found were free, just like Mint. These, of course, show loads of ads (excuse me, offers) to stay in business. But most of the available apps require paid subscriptions, with prices typically topping out around $100 a year, or $15 a month. (Spoiler: My top pick is cheaper than that.) Since this guide is meant to help Mint users find a permanent replacement, any services I chose to test needed to do several things: import all of your account data into one place; offer budgeting tools; and track your spending, net worth and credit score. Except where noted, all of these apps are available for iOS, Android and on the web. Once I had my shortlist of six apps, I got to work setting them up. For the sake of thoroughly testing these apps (and remember, I really was looking for a Mint alternative myself), I made a point of adding every account to every budgeting app, no matter how small or immaterial the balance. What ensued was a veritable Groundhog Day of two-factor authentication. Just hours of entering passwords and one-time passcodes, for the same banks half a dozen times over. Hopefully, you only have to do this once. What about Rocket Money? Rocket Money is another free financial app that tracks spending and supports things like balance alerts and account linking. If you pay for the premium tier, the service can also help you cancel unwanted subscriptions. We did not test it for this guide, but we'll consider it in future updates. How to master exams with a calm mind

KOCHI: As the board exams approach, students often find themselves grappling with mounting stress. While we may have plans for how wed like to tackle exam preparation, reality often unfolds differently. The key to effective readiness for exams is to start early and adopt practical, manageable strategies to minimise stress while optimising performance. Lifestyle factors Many students underestimate the impact of lifestyle factors on their cognitive function and overall well-being. To perform at your best, consider creating a basic routine that incorporates the following elements: Exercise & movement: Engage in at least 30 minutes of physical activity daily to boost concentration and relieve stress Hydration & nutrition: Eat balanced meals rich in proteins, healthy fats, and complex carbohydrates while staying hydrated. Medication & vitamins: Take prescribed medications consistently and make sure health concerns are taken care of. Sleep hygiene: Aim for 79 hours of sleep each night, maintaining a consistent bedtime and routine. Planning study timetable A well-structured study plan is crucial for effective exam preparation. Heres how you can design one: Create a visual calendar: Outline your exam dates and assignment deadlines on a large calendar placed in a visible location. Set realistic goals: Allocate specific hours per subject based on difficulty level and syllabus weightage. Break it down: Divide your study sessions into smaller topics or chapters to avoid overwhelming yourself. Prioritise difficult topics first: Begin with the most challenging subjects when your mind is fresh and alert. Use the Pomodoro method: This scientifically proven technique involves studying in focused 25-minute blocks, followed by a 5-minute break. After four cycles, take a longer 15- to 30-minute break to recharge. Optimal performance Yerkes-Dodson Lawexplains that moderate levels of anxiety can enhance performance, while excessive stress can be counterproductive. Finding your optimal anxiety zone is key to peak performance. Heres how one can do that: Mild anxiety (low performance): Too little stress leads to procrastination and lack of motivation. Optimal anxiety (peak performance): A moderate level of stress keeps you alert and engaged, boosting memory retention. High anxiety (performance decline): Excessive stress causes panic, forgetfulness, and burnout. By recognising when stress becomes counterproductive, you can implement relaxation strategies and refocus on your goals. Avoiding procrastination & staying motivated Minimise distractions: Keep away from social media and gadgets during study hours. Change your study environment: A fresh setting, such as a library or a quiet room, can enhance focus. Set time limits: Use alarms to stick to planned study sessions. Track your progress: Maintain a checklist or whiteboard to mark completed topics, reinforcing motivation. Use reward systems: Incentivise your study efforts with small rewards, such as watching a movie after a solid study session. Managing stress effectively Incorporating relaxation techniques into your routine can help regulate stress levels. Some useful methods include: Mindfulness & sensory awareness: Engage your senses in everyday tasks to ground yourself in the present moment. Short relaxation activities: Take 10-minute breaks to listen to music, stretch, or practice deep breathing. Stay connected: Talking to loved ones or friends can provide emotional support and reduce anxiety. Support from parents and teachers Parents and teachers play a crucial role in helping students navigate the stress of exams. If you ever feel overwhelmed, remember that you are not alone there are people who care and want to support you. Dont hesitate to reach out for help. For Parents: Encourage a positive and supportive home environment. Help set realistic expectations and avoid unnecessary pressure. Ensure your child maintains a balanced routine, including breaks and recreational activities. Offer to discuss concerns and provide emotional support when needed. For Teachers: Recognise the signs of student stress and provide encouragement. Offer flexible learning strategies and revision techniques. Remind students that their well-being is a priority and that exams are just one part of their academic journey. Final thoughts Exam stress is inevitable. However, with structured planning, effective study techniques, and stress management strategies, one can navigate the period with confidence. Along with implementing these techniques consistently one needs to always keep in mind that moderate stress can enhance performance, but excessive anxiety needs to be managed. And most importantly, never hesitate to seek help when needed. Parents, teachers, and loved ones have to support the child. Mind and body Got health concerns you want to share with a doctor? After seaplane trial, Kerala pushes airstrips plan for fast connectivity

KOCHI: Taking air connectivity to smaller towns has been a topic of discussion for long. By earmarking Rs 20 crore for the development of heliports and airstrips, coupled with the seaplane project, the Kerala government has taken a major step towards realising the futuristic goal. Finance Minister K N Balagopal, while presenting the state budget for 2025-26, announced a sum of Rs 1.50 crore for the preparation of a detailed project report (DPR) and other preliminary activities to set up airstrips in Idukki, Wayanad and Kasaragod. This is besides the Rs 50 crore additionally earmarked to install water aerodrome facilities for the seaplane project and landing facilities for small planes. Experts view the initiative as the governments effort to provide air connectivity within the state to make up for the delay in the implementation of the express highway or high-speed rail corridor projects. The three districts mentioned have long been in the scheme of things with regard to the futuristic development of the state. If were not getting a superhighway or superfast trains, then airstrips or helipads need to be developed. This is a necessity as the state, which is relatively narrow in width, is elongated in area, Kannur International Airport managing director V Thulasidas told TNIE. While the average width of the state is 70km, with a maximum of 125km, the length from north to south is 560km. The Kerala government aims to use the Regional Connectivity Scheme (UDAN), a central project, to formulate schemes to develop heliports, airstrips, and water aerodromes to augment tourism connectivity. Airstrips will substantially boost the tourism potential of the state as providing quick and comfortable travel facilities will bring in high net-worth tourists. Another factor is the presence of a large number of NRIs. They will surely prefer to travel by air from small airstrips or helipads to the main airports, Thulasidas pointed out. He pointed out that a fifth main airport in the state is coming up at Erumely, and hence, there is no scope for another main airport, which necessitates the development of airstrips and helipads. For the Sabarimala Greenfield Airport project, the state budget has earmarked Rs 4.96 crore . Expert committee submits report on Sabarimala airport Meanwhile, an expert committee that reviewed the social impact assessment (SIA) report for the proposed Sabarimala Greenfield International Airport in Erumely has reportedly given the project its green signal. The committee highlighted that the financial and social benefits of the airport far outweigh its adverse impact. However, it called for action to rehabilitate those affected by the project, a source said. According to the SIA report, the project will directly impact the livelihood of 327 families and require the relocation of 326 families. Additionally, the acquisition process will affect seven places of worship, two schools, a hospital, canteen, ration store and a labour office. A fresh notification for land acquisition will soon be issued under the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement Act, 2013, the source added.

Dembele stars again as PSG beat Brest in Champions League play-off first leg

GUINGAMP: Ousmane Dembele kept up his remarkable form in front of goal with a double as Paris Saint-Germain took a big step towards qualifying for the last 16 of the Champions League with a 3-0 win over French rivals Brest in the first leg of their play-off tie on Tuesday. PSG were overwhelming favourites coming into this tie against opponents who had never taken part in European competition before this season, and there seems little prospect of Brest recovering from this loss in next week's second leg. Vitinha opened the scoring for PSG at the Stade de Roudourou in Guingamp with a penalty just before the midway point in the first half, and Dembele swept in a second on the stroke of half-time before netting again on 66 minutes. The French international forward now has 23 goals for the season, including 18 in 11 appearances over the last two months. Indeed he has 10 goals in just the last four games, a run which includes a hat-trick against Brest in Ligue 1 only 10 days ago. He is irresistible just now, and Luis Enrique's side are unbeatable at the moment against French opponents, against whom they have not lost since last May. Ousmane is full of confidence just now. He was good in 2024 and he is even better in 2025, said Luis Enrique. The teams will meet again in the return leg of this knockout phase play-off tie next Wednesday in Paris, with the winners advancing to a last-16 showdown with either Liverpool or Barcelona. Assuming they make it through, PSG will feel they are capable of beating either of those sides on current form, although Luis Enrique is taking nothing for granted. There is no chance we will treat the second leg like a training game, said the Spaniard. Our objective is to qualify for the last 16 by winning the return. Paris too strong Brest had not defeated the Parisians in any competition in 40 years, since January 1985, andhave now lost 18 of the last 19 meetings between the teams. They will have to try again next week to end that miserable run. It is disappointing and frustrating. I think 3-0 is harsh on us but PSG deserved to win, said Brest coach Eric Roy. Not many people will imagine us winning 4-0 at the Parc des Princes. Once again hosting a Champions League game an hour away from Brest itself in Guingamp, they nearly got lucky early on, when an attempted clearance by PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma struck the face of forward Ludovic Ajorque and almost ricocheted in. However, PSG were handed the chance to go ahead when a Dembele shot struck the arm of Pierre Lees-Melou inside the Brest box in the 17th minute. The Bosnian referee had to come across to check the pitchside monitor before pointing to the spot, and Vitinha then stepped up to send goalkeeper Marco Bizot the wrong way with the penalty. Brest did not let their heads go down and Abdallah Sima had two big chances to equalise, first being denied by Willian Pacho's great recovery tackle and then heading against the far post from the resulting corner. Achraf Hakimi almost scored an own goal too, but instead Paris struck again just before the break, majestically playing their way out of Brest's press and breaking away. Hakimi fed Dembele, who cut in from the right and beat the goalkeeper at his near post. Brest then saw Sima hit a post at the start of the second half, but the visitors continued to look so dangerous. Desire Doue had the ball in the net only for his effort to be ruled out for a tight offside in the build-up, while Dembele fired wide from a good position. Dembele did then strike again almost midway through the second half, trying to feed Bradley Barcola and then seeing the ball break back to him before shooting past Bizot with the aid of a deflection.

UEFA Champions League: Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham Nets Late Goal In 3-2 Win Over Manchester City

Real Madrid's Jude Bellingham struck a last-gasp goal to give the UEFA Champions League holders a 3-2 victory over Manchester City.

Champions League play-off: Bellingham strikes late as Real Madrid pile misery on Manchester City

MANCHESTER: Jude Bellingham scored the winner in stoppage time as Real Madrid twice came from behind to inflict more misery on Manchester City with a 3-2 Champions League play-off, first leg win at the Etihad on Tuesday. Erling Haaland twice put City in front with his first goals in five games against Madrid. But the holders hit back through Kylian Mbappe and Brahim Diaz before Bellingham stroked home in the 92nd minute on his return to England. It was a weird one. We played some of our best football of the season and ended up behind, said Bellingham I don't care what form City are in they are still an unbelievable team. It's always tricky to play against them and we finally took the chance at the end. City now have a monumental task ahead to progress to the last 16 when the sides meet again in the Spanish capital on February 19. It's a feeling of anger and frustration, said City defender John Stones. We need to see games out better. The manager said we need to take accountability for what we do on the pitch. We need to step up when these bad moments happen. The clubs were meeting for the fourth consecutive season in the Champions League, with the winners in each of the previous three years going on to lift the trophy. If that familiarity did not breed enough contempt, Madrid's decision to boycott City midfielder Rodri's crowning as Ballon d'Or winner last year added extra animosity as the Spanish giants took umbrage at Vinicius Junior being overlooked for the prize. Rodri's absence since September with a season-ending knee injury has played a major role in City's decline this seasonas the English champions sit 15 points off the pace in the Premier League. In recent years Madrid have been pegged back on the ropes at the Etihad, twice conceding four times in three visits. This time the visitors had a series of early chances to sow more doubt in City minds. Vinicius' every touch was booed and the home fans were delighted when he had a penalty ruled out for straying offside before he was wiped out by Ederson. City punished late Pep Guardiola's men hit the visitors with a sucker punch on 19 minutes thanks to a brilliant team goal. Jack Grealish's dinked cross was chested down by Josko Gvardiol into Haaland's path, who stayed millimetres onside before stroking home his 26th goal of the season. Real came roaring back as Vinicius' effort came back off the bar. City also hit the woodwork through Manuel Akanji and Thibaut Courtois was forced into a spectacular save from Phil Foden. Haaland remained a constant threat to Madrid's injury-ravaged defence. Ancelotti was forced to name midfielders Federico Valverde and Aurelien Tchouameni in his backline alongside the inexperienced Raul Asencio. Haaland's deflected effort that came back off the crossbar seconds into the second half proved a turning point as Madrid again took control. Bellingham headed wide and Ederson denied Mbappe as the pressure built before it finally told on the hour mark. Mbappe's finish was far from his cleanest but his mishit from Dani Ceballos' cross deceived Ederson and looped into the net. Madrid smelt blood and went for the kill. Valverde drilled inches wide before Bellingham should have scored when he shot low into the legs of Ederson. But it was City who got the third goal when Foden was brought down by Ceballos as he weaved a way into the penalty area and French referee Clement Turpin pointed to the spot. Haaland sent Courtois the wrong way for his 49th goal in 48 Champions League appearances. Yet, by full-time the Norwegian was a disconsolate figure as City's poor campaign took another turn for the worse. Diaz had only been on the pitch a matter of seconds when he fired in against his old club after Ederson parried Vinicius' effort into his path. Moments later the Brazilian goalkeeper was caught in no man's land as Vinicius ran through and, even as his attempt was heading wide, Bellingham stole in for a simple finish.

Love, wrinkles, and memories

Small, wrinkled, mehendi-stained hands grip the handle of a saucepan as tea leaves brew. Steam rises, carrying the aroma of cardamom and ginger through the air, just the way my grandfather likes it. Pouring the kadak (strong) adrak-elaichi chai into his Worlds Best Grandfather cup, my grandmother ( ammi ) wakes my grandfather ( dadu ) every morning, as she has for the past 64 years. This is my ammi , Pistas definition of love. For her, such mundane acts cooking and serving food, ironing clothes, wearing a pink sari or just sitting beside my dadu while watching television define love. But for my dadu , Bhawarlal P, love has taken on different meanings. Ours was an arranged marriage, he recalls. It took us time to understand and adjust to each others likings especially your grandma to my anger. Over time, I learned what truly makes her happy steel dabbas , he quips. He is soon to correct his answer as ammi gives a friendly glare. For me, love was in the small things the flowers and bangles I bought her when we were newlywed, how she took my surname, or how she welcomed my friends with a home-cooked meal, even on short notice. Love was in her waiting by the gate when I returned from work. And today, as I sit retired with no income, its in her silent companionship. Love has evolved at every stage of our life, he recalls. With a shy smile, he adds, We never needed to say the three golden words. Love was in our Friday movie nights, our Sunday beach walks, our Vespa rides through town, and now, in hospital visits, walking side by side. Growing up with a love like this around me, I wonder how the definition of this magical feeling has been reshaped over the years. Yet, even the newer generations yearn for the old-school love. Like my grandparents, many couples in Chennai have their definitions of love shaped by time, experiences, and everyday moments that strengthen their bond. Baskaran I & Nooren Baskaran Partners for a lifetime For Subramanian K and Kousalya S, residents of Adyar, love is in their names. My husband changed his last name to my first name immediately after marriage. It was unusual in those days. Many teased and questioned him whether I was forcing him to do so. Replying to these comments, he said, After marriage, a womans identity changes to ivaloda marumagal, manaivi, thaai (His daughter-in-law, wife, mother). Nobody would know how beautiful my wife, her name, voice or talent is. This statement moved me and I fell for him. He is so selfless, smiles Kousalya. He made this move because when he introduced himself as Subramanian Kousalya, people asked him who Kousalya was and he got to talk about her to them. When people get to know who my wife is, when I get an opportunity to talk about her, and when we talk nice things about her, it is love. Love is more about my respect for her and how I make others respect her. She is an individual and deserves all the appreciation, recognition and blessings from others, explains Subramanian. He goes on to hold an overwhelmed Kousalyas hands and adds, She is my sweetheart. And I would marry her in all my lifetimes. Across the city, Baskaran I from Alandur shares a similar sentiment. He says, Nooren is my wife not just in this life, but in all six others too if the seven-lives theory is true. From the moment I saw her, I knew she was the one. Nooren, laughs as she adds, Ours was a love-cum-arranged marriage. We lived in the same street back then. And when he finally confessed his love to me, he didnt just tell me he announced it to the whole world. They married just eight months into their relationship and since then they have travelled together literally. I like travelling and knowing that, my husband takes me on tours every year. We have been to Goa, Kodaikanal, Velankanni, Nagapattinam and many other cities. All these trips have brought us closer, shares Nooren. Life is a journey and with the right person it is made easy, this quote on Instagram fits right with this couple. Having lived with her for more than 29 years now, we have become best friends. More than a married couple, we are friends. We still make fun of each other, talk softly, go out for desserts, and share our feelings. There is never a dull moment, shares Baskaran. Anitha S & Saravanan K Bonded by friendship Friendship is the foundation for Saravanan K and Anitha S, who saw each other for the first time at their wedding reception. Anitha says, In those days, the elders fixed marriages. We did not have a say. So, when our marriage was fixed, I was in my room and the discussions were happening outside. Saravanans first thought on seeing his new bride was, She is very fair and slim. I have a dark skin tone. The wedding pictures would look like a black and white photograph, he laughs. Though the couple had different opinions about each other at first, they worked on their relationship. Coming together in the institution of marriage, building a home, starting a family, and working for a better lifestyle made them realise that being together is very important in life. Anitha says, Love, for me, is building a life together. This bond remains until death and even after that if you like to believe so. While they might have met on their wedding stage, they make every anniversary special Saravanan, a businessman, gifts Anitha a sari every year. The day includes visiting a temple, spending time at the beach, and ending with a special dinner. This is our way of celebrating our relationship, he says. Couples like Baskaran-Nooren and Saravanan-Anitha live the famous Hindi film dialogue, Pyaar dosti hai! (Love is friendship). For Saravanan, love is all about companionship, being kind, and understanding each other. More than love, empathy towards the other person and the mindset to not break the bond in any tough situation is more important in a marriage, he adds. Love finds new definitions, connections, and celebrations as we age. These couples redefine love in the generation of situationships. They assure us that love is in giving names, cooking, laughing, and togetherness. After all, love isnt always grand declarations. Its in the quiet moments the unspoken promises, the warmth of presence, the comfort of a routine, and the small acts that make every day special.
