  • On Sunday 15th September 1940, the German Luftwaffe, after almost 3 months of sustained air assault on Britain, launched a full scale attack designed to bring out and finally defeat the Royal Air Force (RAF). This day witnessed the climax of what became known as the Battle of Britain. The victory achieved by the RAF that day was the first of the war for Britain and changed its course dramatically. Despite common perception the eventual outcome hung in the balance throughout the dark days of that summer. In the end, it was in fact, a close run thing. The seeds of that victory were sown many years before, not just in the training of the RAF and Empire (now Commonwealth) and other volunteer pilots but in other key areas also. The selection and development of the modern prototype fighters that became the legendary Hurricane and Spitfire. The foresight of senior RAF chiefs who focused on organising and practising defence plans incorporating the use of the innovative emerging technology that was Radar. The small group of pilots known as 'The Few' who formed the 'tip of the spear' in the battle were incredibly brave and skilful and, quite rightly, lauded by none other than Churchill himself. But we should not forget the many others, such as aircraft mechanics, operations support staff (including members of the WAAF), observer Corps members and many, many others whose actions made victory possible. It was, by any standard, a real team effort. On this Battle of Britain day, the team at Eagle Eye Innovations - many of whom are ex-RAF servicemen and women - offer their deep admiration and sincere thanks for the skill and sacrifice that helped to deliver the freedom we all enjoy to this day. Truly, the greatest generation. Per Ardua Ad Astra
