SCHEDULE OVERVIEW

RAIC 2024 Congress on Architecture

October 7, 2024 – 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The Algonquin Resort

The national housing crisis and climate crisis are inextricably connected and pose one of Canada's greatest social and economic challenges. The Canadian government has declared a housing crisis due to soaring housing costs leading to unprecedented affordability challenges, increasing rates of inadequate housing, and a growing number of unhoused people. At the same time, climate change in Canada is leading to more extreme weather events with billions of dollars in damages each year, impairing prosperity and disproportionately impacting vulnerable and marginalized populations. This event will explore the intersection of housing, affordability, and climate change and examine how Canada can move toward holistic solutions to this interconnected crisis.

RAIC Congress Education Day – Life Cycle Assessment Workshop*

October 8, 2024 7:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
The Algonquin Resort

Assessing embodied carbon impacts throughout a building’s life cycle is a necessary step in a shift towards regenerative and lower carbon design. The Canadian built environment is the third-highest source of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and there is an urgent and critical need to accelerate the knowledge, skills and competencies of professionals who design Canada’s buildings.

To address this need, the RAIC is partnering with the National Research Council Canada (NRC) in a one-year rapid-scaling project to train members of the Canadian architectural community through high quality case study-based Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) curriculum.

Embodied carbon, defined as the emissions associated with the extraction, manufacturing, transport, installation, replacement, and end-of-life scenario of products and materials, constitutes a significant proportion of a building’s whole life carbon emissions.

Following a theory-based lecture on LCA, embodied carbon, and related methodologies, participants will engage in a hands-on workshop, learning the basics of how to perform an assessment in small group learning groups.

Participants will leave the session with knowledge of definitions, methods, targets and standards as well as having the opportunity to practice with LCA software to implement into practice.

This training program has been developed in collaboration with key subject-matter experts, an advisory group and is part of a broader project to train and upskill the architectural community in Whole Building Life Cycle Assessment knowledge.

This workshop will be eligible for 6 continuing education hours.

This workshop has been approved by AIBC for 6 CORE LUs.
