Earthquakes[edit]

"My head it at Christ's College"

For the past few weeks I've been working on Draft:Timeline of the Canterbury earthquakes. It currently has 270 sources, which is my biggest project by far, and it'll probably be months until it's finished. I keep noticing that you'd taken a lot of photos about the topic (this one blew my mind and is my favourite), so you might be interested in helping out. If not, then no worries -- this subject fascinates me more than I imagined possible. ―Panamitsu (talk) 08:41, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Haha, have you see the other Rolleston statue photo? It's quite funny. Not sure what my favourite earthquake photo is. It's either River Road or Fitzgerald Avenue. There certainly wasn't a lack of interesting things to photograph, that's for sure. What I've got on at the moment is a draft that I should really finish and another draft that's been sitting there for a while. But I might focus on a few things Olympic Games for the time being. After the Olympics are over and the two drafts are published, I may well want to lend a hand.
In terms of my own big projects, I once came across Living Australian knights and dames (36 of them) and thought we should have the equivalent article for New Zealand. Little did I know that our list is a tad longer (and Paora keeps it up to date – thank you). And List of New Zealand rowers at the Summer Olympics turned out to be quite the exercise, and that one is in need of getting another update. And the List of chairpersons of district health boards saw me trawl through 20 years' worth of press releases before I had nailed that one; I'm reasonably confident that it's complete. Schwede66 09:16, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yup I've seen that picture and had a laugh. The time capsule under another statue was an interesting read. Oh yes, I quite enjoy looking at road damage too. I've always wanted to stand in the cracks.
That amalgamations draft must be really difficult to find sources for, and the chairpersons one must've been especially difficult due to how unbelievably boring press releases can be. Well done. I did a similar thing for Napier Technical College and after combing thorugh about 600 newspapers, I decided that I would never do it again. ―Panamitsu (talk) 10:08, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I once saw a YouTube video of kids building wee ramps and jumping over the cracks in Fitzgerald Ave on their skateboards. One of them hit a wee pebble, which stopped the skateboard dead and the kid went head-first into the gap and was swallowed up. Those cracks were impressively wide and deep (1.5 m deep easily). Schwede66 10:13, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Haha I think I've found it. ―Panamitsu (talk) 10:38, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome. No ramp involved, though; at least not in Fitzgerald Ave. Was many years ago that I watched it. Schwede66 11:08, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Right, have now read your draft. Good work thus far, and nowhere near finished. Good things take time. Schwede66 11:18, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I'm not familiar with Christchurch so I'm walking in blind, so it's nice to have someone familiar with the area spot my errors. That's right, I've still got five years worth of Cera's press releases to go through. ―Panamitsu (talk) 11:22, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I think I have three large boxes with press clippings (all nicely labelled with date and page number, etc) that I can go through one day. That's an absolute goldmine, given that so much of The Press content has disappeared from their website. Schwede66 11:24, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Speaking of The Press, have you noticed a discrepancy between its printed articles and the ones on Stuff/ThePress.co.nz? In making that timeline I had come across several citations on Wikipedia that I was not able to verify. At first I thought it was an error from a Wikipedia editor, but it's happened so much that I think it might be the source. I don't have any physical papers so I can't test my theory. ―Panamitsu (talk) 22:39, 24 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, there is a discrepancy. Sometimes it's one day (i.e. when they publish online the day prior to the story appearing in print). Sometimes it's a completely different date, and that's caused by a website upgrade where dates got mangled (in that case, I think the date as it now appears online is always the first of the month, but that may not always be the case). Schwede66 00:14, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ah I meant the text inside the source rather than the date, but that makes sense. ―Panamitsu (talk) 00:28, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, yes, they often have completely different titles online compared to in print. Very annoying and confusing. Schwede66 00:30, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
For example, New Regent Street. It says The Press described the opening as an "anti-climax", but the given source does not say this. ―Panamitsu (talk) 00:30, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I've had a look on ProQuest (via my Wikipedia Libray login and if you don't know what that is, I recommend you should look into it) and cannot find an "anti-climax" article that relates to New Regent Street. I'd nuke the comment, to be honest. Schwede66 01:33, 25 June 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like my suspicions were correct. On Central City Red Zone there is an invisible comment stating, "Note that the 858 days detail is only shown in the printed version of The Press". ―Panamitsu (talk) 07:52, 7 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I may have left the comment. I wrote the article (I think) and I had a subscription for The Press back then. Schwede66 17:14, 7 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for reminding me to copy the VRT ticket from the original to File:Pascal Maynard in The Mythic Store (cropped).jpg, you were quite right, I've reviewed enough licenses and even gotten enough VRT permissions that oversight was a bit embarrassing. As a token gratitude, I added a few pics and other descriptions to National Memorials (New_Zealand)#International National Memorials, which was rather empty before. Hope you like. None are images I took or found myself, they were all already in Commons. Unfortunately, France and South Korea don't have Freedom of Panorama, and I couldn't find any free pics of the Majorca cemetery, so couldn't get the others. Thanks again. --GRuban (talk) 18:51, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for resolving this. I was genuinely surprised but see that it was a simple oversight. Thanks for your good work on the National Memorials article, GRuban – that’s much appreciated. Schwede66 19:11, 1 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

WP:STUBSPACING[edit]

FYI Cat-a-lot removes the spacing automatically. I don't know of a way to override it, unfortunately. Mason (talk) 01:25, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, I did not know that, Smasongarrison. I've used Cat-a-lot a lot on Commons, but never on WP. Has anyone suggested to the developers to look into this so that the tool does not run counter to the manual of style? Schwede66 01:35, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure anyone has, but it sounds like a good idea. Mason (talk) 01:37, 4 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request for arbitration declined[edit]

The request for arbitration in which you were named as a party has been declined by the Arbitration Committee. Arbitrators generally expressed the view that this incident on its own did not yet require arbitration and could have likely been resolved at AN/I. Thanks for the heads up, SilverLocust. I appreciate the work you Arbcoms do. Please pass on my regards. Schwede66 17:32, 5 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nah. I haven't seen a positive talk page contribution from that editor in months. An old man yelling at cloud is best ignored, Jonathanischoice. Schwede66 04:22, 7 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Question; citation tool for dyk prospect[edit]

Hi. I'm nearly done with what I think would be a very interesting article for a DYK, but the citation tool has been down for days. Any suggestions? The draft is Draft:Adam Maraana. Some time pressure, as he competes this month in the Olympics. Thanks. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:1C0D:29BD:F02A:DC84 (talk) 00:19, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nice to hear from you. There's an outstanding item for you at Template:Did you know nominations/Shachar Sagiv that you may have forgotten about.
I'm not entirely sure what you mean by citation tool. I have a link to "Expand citations" (add the page name to the URL for the page you want to run this tool) in my toolbar and I've run it just now and it does appear to work. It's done most of them. I suspect you use the visual editor. I don't, hence I can't offer any advice in relation to that. I'm old-school and use the "Source editor". Within that, there is a citation interface and it gives you templates where you fill in the fields that you've got, resulting in formatted citations. Help:Referencing for beginners#RefToolbar has a cool video that explains how you use it. It's quite straightforward once you've got your head around it.
Given that you are using quite a few sources that are non-English, it would be cool if you could use additional parameters when you do not use a Latin-based script for the title of the source. It's explained under Template:Cite web#Title. The language code to use for Hebrew is 'he'. Schwede66 01:43, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, as always. 1. Sorry I was tardy but I did the required second qpq earlier today. 2. As to the tool, the one that I had in mind - unlike the one you just suggested (citation bot-I had tried it but it does not do much of the work the other tool does), provides a fulsome result. It is on the draft page. Under editor resources — Advanced: Fix bare URLs. When clicked, now it unfortunately just yields this - https://refill.toolforge.org/result.php?page=Draft:Adam_Maraana&defaults=y --2603:7000:2101:AA00:497:A7D2:438:36D5 (talk) 03:18, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hm. Maybe try what I suggested. It's more work, but getting translations done is a manual job anyway. Schwede66 03:25, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. It took a lot of time compared to the other tool! Which I think you will like when it is running again. But it's done. Thanks for your help. Hopefully it gets promoted soon, so the DYK (I'll give you suggested language) can run timely. I think it will be good one. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:1C0D:29BD:F02A:DC84 (talk) 06:11, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
See FYI. Schwede66 06:21, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome. Thanks so much. BTW, this is the short DYK I had in mind:

"... Adam Maraana, an Arab-Israeli, will compete in swimming for Israel at the 2024 Summer Olympics?"

2603:7000:2101:AA00:1C0D:29BD:F02A:DC84 (talk) 07:12, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hm. That doesn't sound interesting enough. See Wikipedia:DYKINT. I don't think you'd get that across the line. Schwede66 09:09, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Maraana says that in this dark time he can succeed as a goodwill "mini-ambassador". There's a hook in that! Schwede66 09:11, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Let me give it a think. I thought the reason it would be so interesting is because it's not well known these days that Arab Israelis can participate for Israel in this manner. More pointed would be that the Israeli Arab Olympian chose to serve in the Navy, but perhaps that is less cheerful, or that he cried when the Israeli anthem played and sang it proudly. Which might be hooky because it might be surprising. But open of course to your thoughts as the expert! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2603:7000:2101:AA00:1C0D:29BD:F02A:DC84 (talk) 14:23, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, yes. Maybe you are right and that does have an element of surprise. Schwede66 16:49, 8 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Happily, the article is now live. I'm as always happy to do a qpq. I do still believe that either the original suggestion, or one longer that includes that element, would be best. If longer, perhaps including that he cried when the Israeli national anthem played. We would not have to give the reason he cried - it's hooky, and the reader could be prompted to go to the article to find out why. (Also, btw, your call as to whether the best date is the date of competitions for the Olympians, or the date prior ...) Your thoughts? 2603:7000:2101:AA00:E9A0:8637:BE9D:BB0E (talk) 12:05, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Now nominated at Template:Did you know nominations/Adam Maraana. Add ALT hooks to the nomination if you feel like it. Schwede66 06:00, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome. Thanks so much, as always. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:59D5:2C36:68B1:8CC7 (talk) 12:31, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Question. I know I suggested the language you used. But I'm thinking about what you said, and how to emphasize the interesting part of this. Perhaps it would help if we were to add "who is" before "an Arab-Israeli"? Focusing the reader more on that aspect of the hook? Your thoughts?--2603:7000:2101:AA00:C039:9FFC:332E:C66 (talk) 13:16, 10 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
