I am going to wait a while to see if he will revert my wikifying, and try to bring it again to a more NPOV form. To be honest the text smacks like it came from the pen of the man himself. Hello there,
Just an note to say thanks for adding yourself to the Psychopathology WikiProject ! I've just added a review page so if you create any new articles, or want to watch out for new ones, add to the list or keep tabs on this page.
Thanks again - Vaughan 19:36, 12 Aug 2003 (UTC)
- Thanks! I have not worked much on these topics lately since I started the WikIProject Medical Conditions, but this is one of the few topics that I have books on that I can do citations from. Hi Ram-Man, I've prepared the Perl script we discussed at the pump. It produces 5 files: Shortest/Longest/Orphaned/Most referenced/Most wanted articles, each as html file and as a text file in wiki format.
The script runs in 5 minutes on my 1.2 GHz machine. I tested it on an old SQL dump.
Be sure to use Perl 5.8 (I use ActivePerl). I spent days optimizing my TomeRaider and Statistics scripts (see here) only to find out that Perl 5.6. has some very huge memory leaks.
You run the script as follows "perl WikiSpecial.pl -i input folder -o output folder -d date of dump as yyyymmdd -l two letter language code: en"
If you add -t the script looks for cur_table_en.sql instead of cur_table.sql
Feedback is appreciated, Cheers Erik Zachte 21:52, 13 Aug 2003 (UTC)
- I'll try to use the script as soon as I can, however I have to upgrade to a newer version of Perl so it will take a bit more. -- Ram-Man 22:14, Aug 13, 2003 (UTC)

Hi, you cast a vote in the TEMP5 debate. The Temp5 proposal was voted down by 61.3% to 38.6%. We seem to be going around in circlces on the whole issue of the main page. A new vote is now taking place to clarify what exactly we want, namely
- Do we actually want to have a new page?
- If so when (immediately, after a pause, timed to the press release, etc)?
- What do people want on the front page and what do they want excluded?
As of now, the whole issue seems surrounded by complete confusion. This way, finally and definitively, we will know what we want and when we want it. So do please express your opinions. The vote is on the same page as the previous votes. FearÉIREANN 20:28, 13 Aug 2003 (UTC)
I have notice that there are several places which have two census entries, which are both orphaned - and the county article links to another version which not yet exists. The one where I first notice it was Farmington, Maine - see also the question I placed in the Wikipedia:Village Pump. Is my attempt to have a redirection to both articles as I did with Farmington OK? Can this be done by a bot as well? Or is there a better solution? andy 10:33, 4 Sep 2003 (UTC)
- The bot can do this. It may actually be on the TODO list on User:Rambot or it is codified in some other thing to do. In any case, it is a somewhat complicated task that I have not gotten around to. On the otherhand, it never hurts when other people do it for me. -- Ram-Man 10:45, Sep 5, 2003 (UTC)
Not sure where to bring this up, but I will start here. I notice that income information the bot generated for Honolulu County, Hawaii is all zeros. Can this be fixed? - Marshman 22:55, 25 Sep 2003 (UTC) Actually, now that I look, all of the Counties of Hawaii are presented with zeros in the economics data paragraph inserted by the Bot. I will delete these in the absence of any "bot" fix, noting so on each page history. That way, the paragraphs can be recovered if the missing data are found. - Marshman 23:08, 3 Oct 2003 (UTC)

Why are you adding ITIS links in the taxoboxes of fishes? They might be useful in a references section, but even where the taxobox currently follows them it may not in the future, and they don't provide any additional information. -- Josh
Because a long time ago I was working on some flowers and I copied the idea from some that I was looking at. I suppose they could be placed in a references section, but I've found that they are pretty small and concise in the taxobox and they only really relate to the taxobox anyway, not the rest of the article. Someone at a glance can see the TSN (Taxonomic Serial Number), so it is not simply a reference but something giving information. In addition, the external link shows a bunch of additional references specific to that information in the taxobox. If there is a consensus one way or another it can be changed. --Ram-Man 12:02, Apr 29, 2004 (UTC)
The TSN does not give additional taxonomic information, because they don't have currency outside of ITIS, and aren't more stable than group names. I thought there was a concensus not to use them, since they're simply promoting one external resource, but that might have just been my personal preference. --Josh
- It is my strong preference as well - they are simply ugly to me and not helpful. That is what the article references section is for. --mav
- Well then, I had no idea that this was such an issue. I'll move them to references sections instead. --Ram-Man 11:55, Apr 30, 2004 (UTC)
I don't think it is such an issue. But thanks, for this and the other stuff you've been doing. --Josh

Request for categories
[edit]Hi, I was thinking about writing a bot to place all the US-census small town and county articles into approriate categories. However, in the process of figuring out how to write and authorise a new bot, I came to relise that it would actually be better and safer to get the original Ram-bot to do it.
I'll be up-front and say that part of my motivation here is the hope that one day the special:random page link will become user customisable so that you could exclude or include specific heirarchies of categories.
On the upside, there are probably several other groups of related articles that could be placed in categories in a similar fashion. -- Solipsist 19:51, 23 Jun 2004 (UTC)
- This sounds all very interesting, and I would be probably be able to help out. I would warn you that I am a tad slow at getting things done sometimes, but I could probably help you out. Newtown Square, PA?
[edit]Ram-Man,
I see from your user page that you are interested in working on Pennsylvania geography.
I have a puzzle for you: an unexpected gap in PA town names, specifically, Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.
While copy editing USA 3000 Airlines, I discovered a true oddity on Wikipedia: a link to a U.S. town that doesn't appear to have an article, namely, Newtown Square, PA. I was under the impression that articles had been written for all U.S. populated places, based on 2000 census data.
My first instinct was that it was a typo, so I checked the USA 3000 company website, but the contact information there does indeed list their mailing address as being spelled Newtown Square, PA, and it even has a zip code: 19073. I checked the USPS.com zip code lookup, and sure enough, it's legit for Newtown Square, PA. So why no article? Is it possibly listed under some other name? Did it maybe get missed in the Census 2000 data dump?
Whatever the case, I really don't know much about Pennsylvania, having only passed through on a couple of occasions, so I really don't know enough to tackle this article. I'd lke to turn the mystery over to someone who has a better working knowledge of PA geography.
If you're not able or interested in tackling this probem, could you point me to someone who is?
Thanks!

Updated population estimates
[edit]Has there been any consideration of using Rambot to update the population statistics for US locations based upon the revised annual population estimates that the Census Bureau releases each year? If we have more recent and accurate data, IMHO we should use it. :) -- Seth Ilys 02:22, 5 May 2004 (UTC)
- I guess this could happen periodically and it is indeed possible. I've already once had to have the bot replace invalid data once. At least at some point it will need to be done in 2010 after the next census anyway. It is a low priority at least right now. But I wouldn't rule it out. --Ram-Man 11:56, May 5, 2004 (UTC)
Rambot suggestion - include a stub message
[edit]Rambot does such a good job that at first I thought the articles were written by a person. I suggest that in the header of the article a comment be placed such as "This is a bot generated Wikipedia entry. Further additions by a human Wikipedian are solicited and encouraged. Please edit out this comment when this article is improved.", or something like it. The idea is to let it be known that these bot generated articles are really stubs, albeit very nice stubs, that need fleshing out. Kd4ttc 00:43, 3 May 2004 (UTC)
- Uh, no. Please leave Wikipedia-specific messages on the talk page. --mav 02:50, 3 May 2004 (UTC)
- Indeed many, if not most, of the article's talk pages DO have a boilerplate message already that point to the appropriate "WikiProject...". Long ago we've discussed similar issues to this. Yes these are stub articles, but they hardly should be treated differently than any other stub article of similar length and information that were not bot generated. The reason that they sound as if they were written by a person is that in essense they WERE written by me, and then the bot simply uploaded them. --Ram-Man 16:32, May 3, 2004 (UTC)
- Well, here is an example. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glenview%2C_Cook_County%2C_Illinois is a bot made stub and no comment in present in the article that it is bot made. I did some edits (my home town) but look at the original bot made article. No stub message. Kd4ttc 21:03, 3 May 2004 (UTC) (You have been hand editing these things and then just uploading? Wow!) rambot to assign categories?
[edit]Could you make rambot assign categories to its articles automatically, like Category:Villages in Nebraska for Ithaca, Nebraska, Category:Tennessee counties for Marshall County, Tennessee etc? RamBot naming bug?
[edit]Hi, I was wondering why RamBot named the page for Avery's Gore, Vermont as Avery's, Vermont. It even looks like someone renamed the page and RamBot overwrote the change in a later update. Hi
Please se my comments and alterations to the Great Bear Lake entry, looks to me like some individuals have been identified although not by name, perhaps the bot needs reined in sometimes?
Trying to help TonyClarke 11:55, 13 Nov 2003 (UTC)
- I guess you mean Bear Head Lake, Minnesota. I shortened the demographics text further. The demographics data on these very low population entities (see List of places with fewer than ten people) can be reworded. IIRC the census website said somewhere that they insert artificial errors to avoid individual data to be displayed, so these data don't need to be 100% accurate, only in the median. andy 11:59, 13 Nov 2003 (UTC)
Formosa places in the US
[edit]How come US Census has no info (I assume that from lack of Rambot entries) on Formosa, Arkansas (in Van Buren County) and Formosa, Virgina (in Charlotte County)? Are they uninhabited? They do appear on maps and Googling reveals some (not many) people were born and died there (and rest of Google entries are junks, unfortunately). (I'm working on the Formosa disambiguation page]]) --Menchi 20:26, Aug 9, 2003 (UTC)
- Oh...are they ghost towns? --Menchi 20:31, Aug 9, 2003 (UTC)
- It has to do with how the census bureau groups data. If these towns called Formosa happen to reside within a larger governmental influence, in the opinion of the census bureau, they may consider it to be one single place. This is usually what happens in the situation where U.S. cities are missing, considering that the bureau is supposed to get everyone in the U.S. (theoretically). It should be noted that 99.9% of the census cities have been imported into Wikipedia. Thus if it is a town that does not exist yet, most likely it has no official census data. In this case, just create an article on it if there is enough information on it. It just won't have any census data. -- Ram-Man 16:47, Aug 12, 2003 (UTC)
Impossible poverty rates
[edit]Hi. I ran into a mathematical impossibility in the Lima, Oklahoma article. It states:
- Out of the total people living in poverty, 70.4% are under the age of 18 and 40.0% are 65 or older.
This adds up to 110.4%, obviously wrong. I belive these numbers mean that out of the number of people in that age group, the given percentage is below the poverty level. (See [2]) I think this needs to be rephrased. Is this change something that Ram-bot can update? Thanks. --ChrisRuvolo 07:44, 3 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Geo-stub
[edit]Just thought to drop a note that if your bot creates any geography related stubs, it should use geo-stub. I've created that stub for that purpose, so tracking down geographical related stubs is easier. - Allyunion 23:22, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Possible Wiki Links for RamBot articles
[edit]Hi, I am currently building and testing an automated Wikipedia link suggester. For the RamBot articles, I thought it would be much better to tell you once now what the suggestions would be, rather than save thousands of identical suggestions onto the talk pages of RamBot articles (which would basically be like spamming).
So, using Aaronsburg, Pennsylvania as an example, here are the results of running it on this article:
- Can link living together: ...ng with them, 60.7% are married couples living together, 9.0% have a female householder with no...
- Can link per capita income: ...$30,938 versus $28,036 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $21,011. 3.8% of the po...
- Can link poverty line: ...tion and 3.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in pov...
These three turned up in most or all or the RamBot articles. (The first two suggestions are kind of sucky, but the poverty line one is alright). Additional to these were the following, which occurred in a much smaller subset of the articles, which I'm presuming are also RamBot articles:
- A reasonable number of articles (such as Aberdeen, South Dakota), include text like "American, 0.54% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.99% from", and 'Pacific Islander' can be wiki-linked. (Happens in roughly 2600 articles, most of which look like RamBot articles).
- Some articles (I forgot to record the name of an example), include text like "431 families residing in the town. The population density is 148.3/km² (384.1/mi²). Th...", and 'population density' can be wiki-linked. (Happens in roughly 1800 articles, most of which look like RamBot articles).
- Some articles (such as Aloha, Oregon), include text like "'Aloha' is an unincorporated community located in Washington County, Oregon...", and 'unincorporated community' can be wiki-linked. (Happens in roughly 400 articles, most of which look like RamBot articles).
To avoid the problems and annoyance that would ensure from making these suggestions over and over, I've added these six word combinations to the list of "bad links", so that these things won't be suggested any more. All the best, Nickj 07:40, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot for your suggestion. I think most of them would make fine changes. The race/nationality links have already been decided on and just need to be done. -- Ram-Man 12:49, Nov 5, 2004 (UTC)

Geography sites question
[edit](from the village pump)
- I rememember seeing something when I first came on board about the geographical site names being first done by robot, using some(?) almanac. Someone please bring me up to speed on this; I don't know where to find the information. A lot of place names were missed. Is there any way to find the information for these place names - and obtain it without retyping? There are some that I'd like to work on, but it would be nice to have a similar format for all. Pollinator 01:28, 13 Feb 2004 (UTC)
- they were added by a robot (I forget which one) using US Census data. So (with a number of exceptions) a missing "place" generally means that that place isn't a unit as identified by the US census. Oh, surely nothing was missed - it seems to have added every barnyard in Minnesota where two cows stood too close together ;) -- Finlay McWalter | Talk 02:04, 13 Feb 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks. I noticed that. But some significant cities (such as Batavia, New York, site of the Holland Land Office, which sold most of NY lands west of the Genesee River, are missing. And some towns are listed in more than one county, which is certainly confusing.Pollinator 03:20, 13 Feb 2004 (UTC)
- It was the controversial Rambot. See its "user" page and Talk page for details. --Menchi 02:08, 13 Feb 2004 (UTC)
- Thank you. I'll look into it.Pollinator 03:20, 13 Feb 2004 (UTC)
- Interestingly that city isn't really missing - actually it is existing twice. For whatever reason only known to the census office it have both a Batavia (town), New York and Batavia (city), New York, which are not identical. Seems like "town" refers to the rural area around the city, while "city" is only the actual urban area. For almost all the apparently missing rambot entries something like this applies. If you know the county then you can usually find these articles with the "What links here" function. I already raised the question what to do with these case some months ago, but received no real answer. The preferred solution would probably to merge the two articles into one, but that'd be a lot of manual work. Or create a tiny disambiguation page linking both. Or make a redirect to the more important one of the two, and add a "see also" at the bottom. Lately I did the second when I stumbled upon such a missing city. But if someone needs a tedious task without much editing enjoyment, just go through all the county articles and make redirect for the missing links. andy 09:00, 13 Feb 2004 (UTC)
I did work through the orphaned article list and discovered many of the rambot article in there. Strangely most were from a few counties, especially the St._Louis_County, Minnesota did lack a lot. User:Bcorr notified me shortly before I finished that those article were already linked once, and it seems like you did remove them yourself intentionally - see [3]. Can you still remember what was the reason for it? Or was it more accidentally that all township were removed? andy 21:40, 1 Oct 2003 (UTC)
Did you notice my comment on the duplicate articles page about the name situation in New Jersey? I think all these places do need separate pages, certainly people in NJ would not think of these places as identical. Alex756 03:06, 2 Oct 2003 (UTC)
Hi Ram-Man,
Do you know of a reference with average elevation data? How about other geographic statistics, like rainfall, snowfall, temperature? Do you think it would be appropriate to add that kind of info to the geographic pages?
David (Dbenbenn 21:01, 5 Nov 2004 (UTC))
- You'll want to take a look at the Geographic references under #3 (Geographic Names Information System). The U.S. Geological Survey has all sorts of geographical entries like evelation and such. The problem is that it does not easily merge in with the Census data, but I do personally have copies of the rather large databases with this data in. Someday this additional data can be added. Already we have GPS coordinates for many cities from a different database. Nevertheless, sometime maybe additional data will be added when time allows. -- Ram-Man 21:10, Nov 5, 2004 (UTC)

Oh and lastly about the 6 transactions per minute. When the rambot first started working before Wikipedia:Bots even existed there were a lot of server troubles and people were complaining about lag, but it turned out that the bot had nothing to do with it (developers of the system verified this, but people clung to their false perceptions). Nevertheless, when I was working on the Bots page, one of the requirements I made of a bot was to not be a server hog, which later developed into a transaction guideline. Nevertheless restricting the rambot simply causes an annoying delay that is all about rules and not about the spirit behind those rules. It violates none of harmless, server hog, useful, or approved. Now in the past we had limited transactions in order to stop the cluttering of recent changes, but with the addition of the bot flag for registered bots, this no longer is an issue. The only other reason for this is to allow humans time to verify the bot entries, but I can assure you that I check a sample of the entries myself and no one is going to check them all anyway, so there is no point. -- Ram-Man 02:52, Nov 10, 2004 (UTC)

- I just wanted to respond to the various things that you mentioned. As I am completed running through the county articles, I don't think I will make a special run just to change the sortkeys stuff, but I can apply any such changes automatically in the future. Actually, I've only just started to even use categories and added them to the articles because someone requested it. I do, however, probably need to discuss the other stuff you mentioned, especially with respect to the redirects. As I understand it, wikipedia policy (as much as "policy" is somewhat optional/flexible) states that you should NOT use redirects when you can use the article itself directly. Basically don't use extraneous redirects when not required. I was not really involved with this discussion, but I did read over it when you gave me the link. I can make the change really easily, but I don't understand the reason to add the extra step, as it doesn't really buy you anything. -- Ram-Man 02:52, Nov 10, 2004 (UTC)
</ end moved talk>
- Personally I didn't add the special sortkey either at the beginning. Once the practice is fixed (which character to use etc), I suppose we could fix the old ones.
- I'll start using the "*" for new changes. -- RM
- The redirects I mentionned are redirects with possibilities, always to be preferred to direct links. Depeding on the context, redirects can be preferable to direct links (see Wikipedia:Village_pump_(policy)#Redirects for a discussion). Using them would have avoided the [[Asia]]n problem. The policy you mention about "extraneous redirects" might be off-site redirects?
- BTW, I think Rambot stubs are fairly useful. I'd prefer them to the many stubs added here. -- User:Docu
- As I've said dozens of times, all stubs no matter how ugly just need people to fill them out! Stub writers could be seen almost as the idealists. -- RM
Invalid Poverty Description
[edit]Hi. I noticed that Rambot is updating article data (at least on counties). I was thinking that while it is doing this, now would be a good time to rephrase the poverty level description for under 18 / over 65 year olds. On the list of outstanding problems, Lima, Oklahoma is listed, but I wanted to make clear that the error in description applies to all Rambot articles. It is not the numbers that are wrong, but the text describing them. The original text:
- Out of the total people living in poverty, 70.4% are under the age of 18 and 40.0% are 65 or older.
Possible replacement:
- Of the people under the age of 18, 70.4% are living in poverty. Of the people 65 or older, 40.0% are living in poverty.
Thanks. I hope this is clear. --ChrisRuvolo 19:31, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)
- Thanks a lot! I was under the misunderstanding that this was a data problem, not a wording problem. I will immediately make the change in wording to reflect the fix. -- Ram-Man 19:34, Nov 10, 2004 (UTC)
- Out of the total population, 70.4% of those under the age of 18 and 40.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
Thanks, that works. I appreciate your efforts here. (RIT CS Dept Class of '01) --ChrisRuvolo 21:43, 10 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Shortcuts for WikiProjects
[edit]- Dear Ram-Man, I found you at the history of Wikipedia:WikiProject. Do you have an answer for Wikipedia talk:WikiProject#Wikipedia:Shortcuts for projects? Regards Gangleri | Th | T 16:25, 2004 Nov 16 (UTC)
- I've never made a shortcut and not really done anything with them, so I don't know the answer to your question. -- Ram-Man
