Thanks for closing this deletion discussion. A disagreement rose out of this discussion over whether or not a line about ululations should be kept in the essay (see here for more context). Anders said he would only remove it if the closing admin instructed him to, but you didn't comment on this issue in your closing. What's your verdict?   • The ContentTranslation extension has been updated:
    • You can now type in list paragraphs on wikis with right-to-left scripts. [2]

Howdy, it's entirely possible that I misunderstood this RM request. The page had initially been at Elara (monarch) up until the 5th of April, 2015. It's been moved back and forth since then, ultimately getting locked at Ellalan (monarch) on the 26th of July. The RM discussion was started on the same date, with the request to move the article to Elara (monarch). I think what confused me was the "malformed request" part, which was in both the closure statement and the oppose statement. I see you had an interaction with User:Theeditorofallthingswikipedia. His editing approach continues to cause me concern with inappropriate warnings to other editors. I have given advice on his talk page which was instantly deleted. I am sure that he is well intentioned but totally lacking in experience and knowledge. If an edit doesn't fall under the criteria for oversight, the oversight admin processing the request can still delete it under a regular revdel criteria. I would only use WP:OS for severe violations of the BLP. You may get a faster response, however, by pinging another admin that is online at the time. Nakon 01:51, 12 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I reversed the closure as there was no apparent consensus to perform the move. The close rationale did not reflect the discussion, and most of the comments were against an immediate move. Battle of the Boyne

I suspect that the semi-protection that you have imposed is because of the repeated intervention of the non-named user who keeps, without a stated reason, reverting my reasoned edit that the religions of William and James were more relevant in the context of the Battle, rather than the Countries where they were born. Unfortunately you have intervened when his version is in the article.

I have not come across semi-protection before, but on looking it up it seems likely that we would still both be able to edit this article, the criteria being very mild.

I don't feel very strongly about this, but I do find his/her anonymous and unreasoned edits annoying. What would you suggest please?

Recent changes

  • MediaWiki can now hide the signature button when you edit a content page. [13]
  • The "Your preferences have been saved" message has changed. You can now see more easily what was saved when you change preferences several times. [14]
  • You can now play Ogg video files in some browsers that don't support this format. This solution uses JavaScript and works on desktop browsers only for now. It will work on mobile later. [15]
  • You can now use the same tools to edit style in VisualEditor on mobile as in desktop browsers. [16]
  • It is now easier to see if there is a JavaScript error in a user or site script. [17]
  • JavaScript authors:
    • You can no longer use the Sajax library. You can see a list of pages to fix. [18] [19]

Unblock request on hold

There is an unblock request at User talk:Mugshots. I am inclined to unblock, but I should be grateful if you would let me know if you have any opinion on the matter. The following are my thoughts:

  1. The user page edits for which you blocked appear to have been mistaken placings of messages there instead of on the corresponding talk page, rather than vandalism. The particular message posted (an immediate level 4 warning) was also probably not appropriate, but misjudging the level of warning to give is a very different thing from vandalism.
  2. Even if you do for some reason think the edits were vandalism, an indefinite block for two fairly mild vandalism edits is surprising.
  3. A "vandalism only" block for two "vandalism" edits from an editor with dozens of non-vandalism edits must surely have been a mistake. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 10:45, 12 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Talk:List_of_oldest_living_people#Break

What does Talk:List_of_oldest_living_people#Break have to do with the ANI discussion? Those edits were made prior to the edit warring, reverted by this edit, protected and a request was made. I'm not arguing about wrong versions, just wanted the edit done pursuant to the discussion. The ANI discussion started off on the issue how the project page should list the results of the RSN, there hasn't been a dispute about the RSN conclusion, just people who think that the WOP project shouldn't say it and just ignore it. Whether or not the project guidelines say what RSN concludes isn't the basis for how pages should be edited. I only proposed removing the section (which also has BLP concerns about poorly sourced names and birth dates for people), not the re-merger done here which is what all the fighting is about. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 00:22, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • Many Wikipedias can now use information from any Wikidata item in any Wikipedia article. Before they could only use the Wikidata item that matched the subject of the article. [29] [30] [31]

Problems

  • Older gadgets that are not using ResourceLoader are not loading anymore. They need to be updated. [33] [34]

Template editor request

Hi Nakon. I want to begin by thanking you for all the work you do on Wikipedia. Your username often pops up on my watchlist for your many positive contributions to the encyclopedia. I also want to thank you for taking the time to review my request for template editor privileges. I understand why I wasn't granted the privilege, and am not here to contest that. I am however disappointed with your comment stating that I should "propose the edits to the templates on their talk pages". The reason this bothers me is that, if you had read my request thoroughly you would have known that I was volunteering to edit the 500+ language templates to add the "lit." parameter that had already been discussed and implemented on a small number of templates but was then forgotten about. I don't think you could have possibly put in the time to carefully read what I had written since you're suggestion for me to edit over 500 talk pages was unreasonable. I'd like to remind you that your job as an admin is not to mark things as "finished," but to improve the encyclopedia and offer constructive support to users. I feel like in this case you did not do either of those things. Again, I am not arguing that I should have been given the permission, I'm only suggesting that you be more careful in future interactions with users, even if it means getting a little less done. Your request was visible on the RFP page for nearly 24 hours. Another editor (L235 (talk · contribs)) with the "templateeditor" permission commented that you had not "worked on, well, any protected edit requests or sandboxes". Per the requirements on the Template Editor page, administrators are discouraged from granting permissions unless specific criteria are met. WP:TPEGRANT defers the final disposition to an administrator, and I have determined that you do not currently meet the criteria for this user right. I've thoroughly reviewed your request, and I disagree that being BOLD is a good use of the template editor permission. You should suggest the edits on a few of the template-protected templates first. I will not grant this right to an editor that does not meet the minimum criteria. Once again I'm not saying that you should have granted me the permission, only that your comments indicated that you weren't taking the time to read a proposal and respond in a constructive manner. If you had written "Declined, does not fulfill the criteria" I would not have had a problem. It's the fact that you suggested I edit 500 talk pages, indicating that you were not aware of what was being asked in the first place that bothered me. I think that admins need to be more careful than the average user and not rush to complete tasks for the sake of completing them. Your later suggestion that I edit the sandbox then ping you to apply the change was very reasonable and constructive and I will be doing that. I do apologize that I did not indicate that I fully reviewed your contribution. I thoroughly review every submission at WP:RFR, even if I do not leave a detailed message describing my decision. I review at least seven different criteria before making a decision on granting or declining user rights.
I did not mean for you to edit 500+ talk pages for the template to be updated. A few of the highly-transcluded templates' talk pages would be more than enough to review your template edit/submission history once the edit was approved. Number 12 required a more substantial edit. It seems like the original template was never updated with the "language with name" template when the others were. As it is now the template documentation is incorrect, as pointed out on the talk page. My edit would fix this and replace the left-to-right marker with the appropriate parameter in the Language with name template to increase functionality and be consistent with the other templates.

As part of our recent efforts to improve the use of edit filters on the English Wikipedia it has been established as a venue for internal discussion by edit filter managers regarding private filters (those only viewable by administrators and edit filter managers) and also as a means by which non-admins can ask questions about hidden filters that wouldn't be appropriate to discuss on-wiki. As an edit filter manager we encourage you to subscribe; the more users we have in the mailing list the more useful it will be to the community. Randy D. Funk under notification

I just realized the article on Randy D. Funk was deleted with next to no participation. I think the point that 6 months before the discussion had closed keep should have at least caused pause until people were notified. The arguments for deletion were false based on Cavarrone's false view that any source created by a Latter-day Saint is related to all other Latter-day Saints. The writing of LSD shows either ignporance or malice or both on the part of the writer. Him and Purple backpack have consistently engaged in an attempt to delete as many articles related to Latter-day Saints as possible. In this case they seem to have sought to avoid any notification of people involved.   • Wikimedia Labs' HTTPS certificate expired for most of Tuesday 15 September. To reach Wikimedia Labs and Tool Labs securely you had to ignore your browser's security error message. There was no risk to data security during this time. [73]
  • Last week the notification system was split into two parts. This was temporarily undone because of a bug and performance concerns. It will return to two parts this week. [74][75]
  • UploadWizard couldn't upload files larger than 5 MB when using chunked uploads. This has now been fixed. [76]

Problems

  • On September 29 users' skin preferences were removed by mistake on small and medium-sized wikis. This changed preferences back to Vector. Restoring all data would cause even more problems. Affected users who want to have their preference changed back globally can ask for it as a comment on Phabricator task T119206 until December 21 2015. [134]
  • Some scheduled tasks were not working properly from September to recently. This meant some pages in the special pages namespace were not updated. It has now been fixed. [135]

Changes this week

  • Wikinews, Wikispecies, MediaWiki.org and Meta will be able to use information from Wikidata. [136][137]
  • There are no MediaWiki deployments this week (calendar).

Future changes

  • Category watchlists are now available on test wikis and MediaWiki.org. The plan is to enable it on most wikis in January. [138]
  • Cross-wiki notifications are being developed. When this is done you will not have to go to the wiki where something happened to be notified. [139]

  • Revision scoring will help to automatically identify bad-faith and good-faith edits. The point is to make it easier to block vandals and welcome newcomers. It currently supports Wikidata and 14 Wikipedias. [140]

  • Meta was not given access to information from Wikidata last week. This will happen later. [141]

Changes this week

  • You will be able to use wikilinks in Flow topic titles. [142]
  • IP users will have a toolbar with links to the user talk page and user contributions. Some Wikipedias already have this feature. [143]
  • You will be able to edit the graph size in the visual editor. You can either specify the size in the graph dialog or drag it to be the size you want it to be. [144]
  • It will be easier to write math in the visual editor if you don't know LaTeX. You can use symbol buttons instead. [145]
  • You will be able to use syntax highlighting when you write math with LaTeX in the visual editor. [146]
  • UploadWizard will look a bit different. [147]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 December. It will be on all Wikipedias from 10 December. (calendar).
  • New MediaWiki versions will now be on Catalan and Hebrew Wikipedia on Wednesdays. Other Wikipedias get the new MediaWiki version on Thursdays. [148]

Indef of EEng?

Maybe I'm missing something, but I'm a little confused as to why you saw the need to indef EEng for NOTHERE, revoke talk page and e-mail access, and blank his user talk and user pages. I don't really know EEng, but apart from some civility stuff, I don't really get the block rationale or need to revoke talk page access immediately. I've got to agree with this. EEng made a bit of an oddball comment, which is not unusual to my understanding. Even if a block were warranted, ratcheting it up immediately to an indef strikes me as extreme. You also didn't block him for civility reasons. You blocked for WP:NOTHERE -- and, at least as far as I see, didn't substantiate it except after the fact with the single diff which shows, at worst, inappropriate joking around.   • This is a courtesy note to state that I've overturned your block of EEng, which was unjustified. Hi Nakon. I've looked over the situation a few times since I've made the unblock this morning. Looking into your history, I don't see a pattern of problematic behaviour, this really does seem like a one-off. But there have been a few actions that you took that are not up to par.

  • You say above that you "blocked the account for abusive comments, especially this one: [155]." But context of that comment shows it to not be abusive. When I was an arbitrator, I saw real abuse - that wasn't. Even assuming it wasn't good natured (which the context showed it was), it wasn't abusive. So from the outset, we've got a block which is not great.
  • The block length of indefinite made little or no sense, unless you believe the edit to be so egregious that he should not return, but you didn't take any action to hide that edit, which makes me doubt you felt it was that egregious.
  • Your block log entry was a link to WP:NOTHERE, which is an essay and doesn't apply in this situation as the editor you blocked has 25k edits, with the largest proportion to article space. I think you'd struggle to convince the community that EEng was not here to build an encyclopedia.
  • You removed talk page access and email access, despite zero further edits being made. You removed this upon request, but shutting down avenues of appeal like this is very concerning.
  • You rolled back an edit at WP:Deletion process which EEng had made. This wasn't vandalism, and did not meet the criteria for rollback. Again, this is of significant concern, if you were not an admin, you would likely lose the rollback user-right for an edit like that.

Like I say, there's no real need for this to go further, there's no pattern of problematic edits here. I would, however, appreciate acknowledgement that there were issues here on the understanding they won't happen again. WormTT(talk) 15:50, 9 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Help decide the future of Wikimania

The Wikimedia Foundation is currently running a consultation on the value and planning process of Wikimania, and is open until 18 January 2016. The goals are to (1) build a shared understanding of the value of Wikimania to help guide conference planning and evaluation, and (2) gather broad community input on what new form(s) Wikimania could take (starting in 2018).

After reviewing the consultation, we'd like to hear your feedback on on this survey.

In addition, feel free to share any personal experiences you have had at at a Wikimedia movement conference, including Wikimania. We plan to compile and share back outcomes from this consultation in February.

Deletion review of PureScript

I've read the Wikipedia:Deletion review but am unsure how to proceed recreating the PureScript page deleted last April? I've begun gathering new sources on its wiki. Would you kindly offer guidance?   • You can now follow when pages are added or removed from a category on German Wikipedia. The plan is to add it to Wikimedia Commons and other Wikipedias this week. [172][173]
  • Administrators can hide individual entries of a page with RevisionDelete. There is now a button to choose "all", "none" or "inverse" in Special:Log. The article history will get the same buttons soon. Wikis that have done this locally with JavaScript will be able to remove that code. [174]

  • You will be able to see the references when you preview a section you are editing. This will happen even if there is no <references /> tag in that section. [175]

  • The OTRS system will be upgraded. The plan is to do this on 3 February at 08:00 (UTC). It will probably take 6 to 8 hours. OTRS will be down during the upgrade. [177]
  • Users will soon be automatically congratulated when they reach some edit count milestones. [178]

Problems

  • Sites with a wikimedia.org address were by mistake redirected to the Wikimedia Foundation wiki on 26 January. This included Meta and Wikimedia Commons. The mistake was fixed after an hour. [179]
  • Some users had problems logging in and out around 22 January. Bots also had problems and edit previews did not work properly. This was because of problems related to the new component SessionManager. It was undone on 23 January. [180][181]
  • Because of new problems with SessionManager the latest version of MediaWiki was removed from the Wikimedia wikis again on 31 January. The new version this week will be without SessionManager. [182]

Changes this week

  • The page history will get a help link. This will go to Help:Page history on Meta. Wikis can exchange it for a link to their local pages. [183]
  • Notifications will only show part of a page name if it is very long. You will also have another way to mark notifications as read. [184][185]
  • The Universal Language Selector input methods are now available with the visual editor. This means many who write in non-Latin scripts can now use the visual editor. [186]
  • The visual editor will now give you more tools to edit tables. You can move rows and columns in a table and copy parts of tables to make new ones. You can also copy and paste more than one cell at the same time. [187][188][189]
  • The visual editor has a new warning message when you leave a page you are editing without saving. Non-English wikis might need to translate it. [190][191]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 2 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 3 February. It will be on all wikis from 4 February (calendar).

Recent changes

  • Thanks to the Graph extension and Pageview API, we now have {{Graph:PageViews}} templates that can show pageviews for any wiki page for any of the wikis. See the examples.
  • The Capiunto extension is installed on test wiki. Capiunto provides flexible infobox functionality for Scribunto and generates HTML for infobox features such as headers and rows. It is designed for clean and modern infoboxes that are driven by data from Wikidata, easily usable across different language versions, and easily extensible.
  • The visual editor now follows the TemplateData format setting announced in November. When you edit or add a use of a template, the wikitext will be laid out in one of the two ways. [216][217]
  • The order of parameters and format defined in a template's TemplateData will be now respected. [218][219]

Changes this week

  • On wikis where the visual editor is available in single edit tab mode, red links may open the visual editor instead of the wikitext editor, depending on user preferences. [220]
  • Anonymous editor warning is now displayed as a warningbox for consistency in both the visual editor and the wikitext editor. [221]
  • Parsoid has been updated to fit some HTML 5 specifications. [222]

Recent changes

  • Files on Wikimedia Commons can now be 2 GB big. The old limit was 1 GB. [224]
  • Welcome notifications now have a different symbol. English Wikipedia already had this one. [225]
  • The Wikimedia memory cache servers in the Eqiad cluster have now been upgraded to Debian 8 (Jessie). Some users might have had to log in again because of this. [226]
  • It is now easier to categorize images uploaded to Wikimedia Commons in the Commons Android app. [227]
  • Bare attributes in tags now parse according to the HTML5 specifications. <pages from= to= section=1> will parse as <pages from="to=" section="1"> instead of <pages from="" to="" section="1"> as it used to. Please use <pages from="" to="" section=1> or <pages section=1> instead. This is mostly likely to affect pages on Wikisource projects. [228]

Problems

  • Phabricator has been a bit unstable lately. This should be fixed now. [229]
  • The PageView API shows wrong data between 23 February and 29 February for pages with special characters in their title. [230]
  • The parsing change mentioned above caused a large number of pages to break, especially on Wikisource. [231]
  • You may see falsely formatted edit links on both mobile and desktop devices. Mobile devices can also show incorrect formatted table of contents. This should be fixed soon. [232]
  • Templates using TemplateData that were edited with the visual editor might have some problems in wikitext mode. This can be fixed by editing and saving the page by using the visual editor without making any changes. [233]

Changes this week

  • Cross-wiki notifications will be enabled as a beta feature on all wikis on 10 March. You will be able to get notifications when something happens on another Wikimedia wiki. [234]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 8 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 9 March. It will be on all wikis from 10 March (calendar).
  • Wikivoyages will get the Kartographer extension. Kartographer will allow <mapframe> and <maplink> tags in an article to insert an interactive map and overlay it with different markers. You can add ideas and suggestions to the Maps talk page. If you find any bugs, you can report them in Phabricator. [235]

  • The Wikimedia technical operations team plans to do some server work on 22 March. This could cause some problems, for example make it possible to read but not edit the Wikimedia wikis for a short period of time. The date for this might change. [237]

  • Wikimedia has a new backup data center in Dallas. Because of planned work on this, you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for a short period of time on both 22 March and 24 March. This could be postponed to April 18. You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. Because of a test, there will also be a couple of minutes where you can't edit the wikis on 15 March starting 07:00 UTC. You can read more about the server work. There will be more notifications and updates about this.
  • Administrators and other users with advanced permissions will need to have an 8-byte long passwords. This change takes place on 15 March. Users with too short passwords will be asked to change password the next time they log in. This was decided in a discussion on Meta and is because they can use tools that can hurt the wikis. [240]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 15 March. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 16 March. It will be on all wikis from 17 March (calendar).
  • The buttons in interfaces will be simplified. Instead of white, red, green and blue buttons, in future there will only be white, red and blue ones. [241]

Problems

  • Wikimedia has a new backup data center in Dallas. The Wikimedia Technology department planned to test it this week. This will take place the week of April 18 instead. You can read more about the server work. There will be more notifications and updates about this.
  • In Firefox, the visual editor would sometimes just jump down to the bottom of the page when you double-clicked on a table cell. This has now been fixed. [242]

  • It will now be easier to list IP addresses that don't have to solve CAPTCHAs. [243]
  • You will now be able to mark Echo notifications as unread. [244]

  • You will be able to remove the header and footer style from User language (babel) boxes. This will make it easier to use them with other userboxes. [249]

  • Commons will soon have improved access to Wikidata's data. It will then be possible to access data about any concept on any page on Commons. Assistance with testing this on the beta cluster is appreciated. [250]
  • Wikibits.js will not be loaded by default anymore starting April 2016. Gadget and script authors should have already updated their code since the previous announcements, but there is another migration path available if needed. See wikitech-l for details.

  • The visual editor can generate wikicode with image options in your language. Examples of image options are "thumb" or "left". You can ask to change to options in your language in Phabricator. [253][254]
  • Wiktionaries and Wikisources can now use the visual editor. It is an opt-in beta feature. It still needs development to work better with these projects. [255][256]
  • ORES is using new models. Tools that use ORES' predictions can behave strangely. ORES also has a new API. [257]
  • The visual editor now supports classical Greek characters. [258]

Problems

  • There was a bug when you used keyboard arrows in templates in the visual editor. This has now been fixed. [259]

Problems

  • Wikimedia tested a new data center last week. This meant that the wikis could be read but not edited for 45 minutes on April 19 and for 20 minutes on April 21. [267]
  • When the data center was tested, new edits were not shown in the recent changes log for 20 minutes. They are in the logs now. You can read more about how to find the edits.
  • Unread notifications were sometimes counted incorrectly. This has now been fixed. [268]

  • Wikimedia Commons will have better access to Wikidata. They can use data from any page on Wikidata on any page on Commons. This will happen on April 26. [269]
  • It will be easier to choose if you want to watch files you have uploaded with the upload wizard. [270]
  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from April 26. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from April 27. It will be on all wikis from April 28 (calendar).
