Hello fellow editors of Wikipedia! I am dagger concerned for the future of this draft/article once this depression gets a name, if it does so. Of course we all know that the next name on the list is Elsa, and I’m concerned this page will get absolutely destroyed by vandals in the next few days, as Elsa is the name of a popular Disney princess. I’m not too sure if we can make a page protect request yet but we should do so as soon as possible. If not, we may have to be dealing with Into the Unknown and Let It Go vandalism on this article. Some news companies such as CNN and the Daily Mail have said things such as “cue the memes”, and James Spann has even made references on Twitter (I think). We should use these as warnings on what the vandals could possibly do, since these are coming from professional media companies/personnel. We need to protect this page as soon as possible! Thank you and stay safe everybody!DachshundLover82 (talk) 04:04, 1 July 2021 (UTC)
- DachshundLover82, i agree on this, there is possible making sockpuppet to vandalism this page. HurricaneEdgar 04:17, 1 July 2021 (UTC)
- DachshundLover82, Hell yeah, protect this page, I know these f***ing vandals will bring Disney's Frozen memes and vandalise the s*** out of here. Beraniladri19 🌀🌀 02:45, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
@HurricaneEdgar:, yeah like the one from last year who kept putting the very offensive things on articles such as Hurricane Iota. It’s like the WMO was asking for people to make fun of this hurricane when they chose the name Elsa.DachshundLover82 (talk) 04:21, 1 July 2021 (UTC)
- I actually asked about this a while ago, and policy is generally against preemptive protection. So unfortunately we will probably have to wait until the vandalism starts hitting to protect the page, which will probably be within an hour of the page being moved to mainspace. TornadoLGS (talk) 20:34, 1 July 2021 (UTC)
Disruptive editing has began, can somebody submit a protection request please?DachshundLover82 (talk) 15:47, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- DachshundLover82, Ok dude Beraniladri19 🌀🌀 16:00, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- This article will probably end up Semi-Protected indefinitely in the future, similar to Hurricane Harvey, Hurricane Irma, and Hurricane Sandy. But we'll have to wait for the current protection to expire and vandalism to resume (which it will). Also, a lot of us knew that this page was going to be vandalized. Thinking otherwise is like expecting a hungry kid to be able to avoid stealing candy to eat. LightandDark2000 🌀 (talk) 20:33, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- LightandDark2000, Why ? Becoz it is link to a so-called meme ? Beraniladri19 🌀🌀 04:15, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

I mean the memes about Elsa are funny but Wikipedia isn’t the place for them. I don’t know why the vandals can’t just hang out on Twitter or Reddit.DachshundLover82 (talk) 04:17, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

[edit]Hey everyone, just a small reminder: PLEASE archive the news from Elsa here to prevent dead links, which are bad for a developing article. We can use archive.today for archiving. Thank you and stay safe! 🌀HurricaneParrot🐦 13:21, 1 July 2021 (UTC)
Section about the name
[edit]Due to inevitable interest I've added a section detailing when the name list for this season has been chosen, with a link to an article which details the name choosing process. (If Elsa becomes a hurricane a makes a landfall in US then likely there will be a lot of news items, possibly an official statement from NHC about the name choosing etc., so it might be worth thinking about how this will be incorporated ahead of time) 51.6.169.51 (talk) 09:18, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- I feel this is rather unnecessary for right now.DachshundLover82 (talk) 12:21, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- Agreed with DL82, it is unnecessary to this article. Half of the section isn't even about the name and its relation to a fictional character, but rather about how the name was chosen and what led up to it, which could easily be replaced with something like "X name was replaced with Y name". Even though reliable sources mentioned this, it does not immediately warrant inclusion into the article; social media memes are not notable unless it's very widespread and has an actual impact on society (which this doesn't, it's just people making fun of the name and nothing else). At most, this should be condensed to a single sentence along the lines of "Elsa garnered social media attention because X" within the article; an entire section is overkill. Akbermamps 13:51, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- Fair enough Akbermamps, I'll condense it and put it within the article. 51.6.169.51 (talk) 16:51, 2 July 2021 (UTC)

- 51.6.169.51, This is WP:TRIVIAL, plus (a little off-topic), very boring meme, in fact its not a meme at all. Beraniladri19 🌀🌀 13:59, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- No, this is NOT trivia, since it has become a widespread meme on Social Media and in American media outlets. Anyone paying attention to social media is aware of this. This storm has garnered widespread attention for its name that few others have. However, the section could've been better-written. I will re-add and revise the section later today. LightandDark2000 🌀 (talk) 20:33, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- A whole section for a storm becoming a meme is a bit much. A sentence, at most will do, like we did with Hurricane Isaias and the difficulty some people had with the pronunciation. TornadoLGS (talk) 20:54, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- I agree that a sentence is apropriate. I would suggest somone with permision to undo removal of the relevant sentence from the introduction. 51.6.169.51 (talk) 21:20, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- LightandDark2000, Why don't we have a !vote ? Beraniladri19 🌀🌀 04:17, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
- I see you've readded the paragraph LightandDark2000. I think a short paragraph like what exists now is fine per WP:WEIGHT, though I don't think this should be in the lead since it's pretty much localized to America and I don't think media outlets in the Antilles are catching on to the meme for obvious reasons. Perhaps move it to US preps? ~ KN2731 {talk · contribs} 11:07, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
- If it is to be moved, I think that it should be given its own section, and maybe a brief overview in the lead. I'll move it back to its own section. LightandDark2000 🌀 (talk) 11:09, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
- A single sentence is all that is needed for this, anything more is undue weight for what amounts to trivia. ~ Cyclonebiskit (chat) 16:10, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
- Agreed. It's just a bunch memes and puns. No more notable than Superstorm Sandy as an alternate name for Hurricane Sandy. TornadoLGS (talk) 16:36, 3 July 2021 (UTC)

Move to mainspace
[edit]Elsa has just strengthened into a hurricane, and is affecting the Caribbean. It needs to be moved to mainspace now. Can someone please delete the redirect so this draft can be moved? 🐔 Chicdat Bawk to me! 12:24, 2 July 2021 (UTC)

- HurricaneParrot, Hi, guys i Requesting speedy deletion (CSD G6) to move this page. HurricaneEdgar 13:06, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- Done. Please be careful when moving pages next time to avoid unnecessary moves. Chlod (say hi!) 13:54, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- Chlod, The problem is that User:CycloneYoris is making redirect pages which complicates moving process Beraniladri19 🌀🌀 13:55, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- Beraniladri19 FYI, creating redirects for each storm that forms is a normal and harmless process as Chlod says below. If I wasn't creating these redirects, it would be someone else creating them, since this is something all of us editors here on WP have done throughout the years. CycloneYoris talk! 21:30, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- Moving drafts to mainspace isn't complicated. The redirects are beneficial since they prevent new pages from being created. CycloneYoris is not at fault here.
- By procedure, page moves over redirects can be done by either administrators or page movers (as long as there is only one revision). If it can't be moved over a redirect, the subject and talk page are G6'd to make way for a move. For some reason I can't reconcile in my brain, Draft:Hurricane Elsa was moved to Talk:Hurricane Elsa (log), then moved back (log), then finally the redirect was G6'd to make way for a move. The question I have now is why did you move the draft to a talk page? Are you unaware that you're supposed to move the talk page with the subject page? Why didn't you G6 the redirect in the first place? This entire move process could have been extremely simple, but instead the move log is now polluted with unnecessary moves between namespaces and over redirects that only made my head hurt more in trying to write this message.
- Moral of the story: Just request the move on WP:RMT or CSD G6 the pages. Not this. Chlod (say hi!) 14:13, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- Chlod, For you answer to the question
"Why did you move the draft to a talk page? Are you unaware that you're supposed to move the talk page with the subject page? Why didn't you G6 the redirect in the first place?"
, is that I was stupid, I done it by mistake. But that was only one disaster and it was my fault. Beraniladri19 🌀🌀 14:18, 2 July 2021 (UTC)- BTW, humans do mistake, I still learning dude (new to NATL) Beraniladri19 🌀🌀 14:18, 2 July 2021 (UTC)
- It's good to be bold, but you're supposed to be careful. For performing tasks that you're still learning, refer to a help page in order to do things right on the first time. Reading Wikipedia:Moving a page would have been beneficial in retrospect. One of its specific sections, "Moving over a redirect" applies specifically for this process. It doesn’t say whether the death came from Elsa or not but seeing imagery from last night it is likely from Elsa's outflow. I would personally add it.DachshundLover82 (talk) 03:56, 3 July 2021 (UTC)
Overly detailed progression of watches/warnings
[edit]This has been a longstanding issue with tropical cyclone articles, but the vast majority of readers do not care about the intricate details of when/where watches and warnings were issued. A brief generalization of the area, first date, highest level warning, and cessation is sufficient. ~ Cyclonebiskit (chat) 19:25, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
@Cyclonebiskit:, if you have a complaint about the article it would be helpful for other editors for you to be bold and fix it yourself. Thank you!DachshundLover82 (talk) 22:45, 4 July 2021 (UTC)
- @DachshundLover82: I don't have as much time to sit down and go through things like I used to in years past. This is to clarify why I added the tag to the article and hopefully encourage someone to fix it while I'm unable to. ~ Cyclonebiskit (chat) 15:35, 5 July 2021 (UTC)
Records section
[edit]@109.203.240.201: This is, quite simply, WP:UNDUE weight on a bunch of trivial factoids that are WP:UNSOURCED, except for Elsa being the earliest fifth named tropical or subtropical cyclone on record in the basin, which can be addressed by just a single sentence in the meteorological history section. Please stop adding it.--Jasper Deng (talk) 17:42, 5 July 2021 (UTC)

[edit]Hey guys, the article is now well-written and meets the criteria for B-Class, so what do you guys think ? Beraniladri19 🌀🌀 03:36, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
- No way that is happening while Elsa is still active and affecting the US, meaning new information on Elsa's impacts is constantly being generated. Current-class exists for active systems because it's impossible to be fully up to date on a rapidly evolving situation. ~ KN2731 {talk · contribs} 06:00, 7 July 2021 (UTC)
Coast Guard suspends search for 9 Cubans in the Florida Straits
[edit]A boat carrying 22 Cubans from Cuba capsized in the Florida Straits, ultimately leading to 13 being rescued and 9 remaining missing. Yesterday, the Coast Guard (which had been searching for the remaining victims) suspended their search. The 9 missing are likely dead. When the boat capsized at approximately 8 PM, Elsa was located over Cuba and the storm would've been affecting the surf at the very least. Should the 9 be considered as fatalities of the storm, listed as missing, or not included at all? Coast Guard bulletin
RaskBunzzz (talk) 23:50, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
- @RaskBunzzz: It should be counted as missing, because they're not comfirmed either dead or alive, The U.S Coast Guard may say "likely dead" but we'll never know. Beraniladri19 🌀🌀 03:03, 13 July 2021 (UTC)
