    Pet care?

    Over at the Betta article, an external link was added to a care guide. Aside from it probably being spam, I thought I'd ask: is it appropriate to have care guides linked from a Wikipedia article (that isn't about pet care, but is about an animal commonly kept as a pet)?     I've removed the external link from the article as well as a similar one from Rainbow shark. In addition to NOTHOWTO, there's also WP:NOBLOG, which pretty much says that random blogs from non-notable people should not be external links. SkyWarrior 02:20, 20 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    Aversion security

    Logspeed CZ Arena

    Good morning, could someone correct the title of the "Logspeed CZ Arena" page? The word "Arena" needs the acute accent ("é"). JackkBrown (talk) 13:17, 20 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    This would be accomplished (perhaps by yourself) according to WP:Move, but retaining a redirect from the non-é title would be essential because many searchers cannot conveniently input accented characters.
    However, the principle of WP:Article titles#Common name must be considered. This is the English Wikipedia – in English-language sources, is the name written most commonly with or without the accent?     There is no source in the article - English or Czech - which gives the name. In fact the only source in the article (which I have just rescued from the Wayback machine) is a press release about a previous renaming of the stadium. I have tagged it with several tags, including probable non-notability.     You have not submitted the draft for review. If you do so in its present state, I am confident that it will be declined, because it does not have any independent sources about the house.     Certainly, the draft needs work, such as removing trivia like "Radiators are in good working order." More references would be great. There is biographical information about Joseph Ferris Perry here. That being said, I think that there is a strong presumption that locations on the National Register of Historic Places are notable. The place where you have had material speedily deleted is on Slovenian Wikipedia, which is completely separate from English Wikipedia: that is where you should direct your apology.     Pescara

    I’ve been accused of abusing multiple accounts, yet I only have one account, so what recourse do I have?

    Creating Serebii.net

    Hi! The page Serebii.net seems to have been created and deleted several times from 2006–2007, and was indefinitely protected from being recreated in 2012. However, I see no reason why it can't be recreated today as a redirect. In fact, it currently exists under a different name: Serebii (Website) redirects to Pokémon#Fan community.

    As such, I would like to request that it be recreated. I'm not an administrator and as such can't do it myself, and am also not sure where to go to officially request these types of things. I know Wikipedia:Requested articles exists, but that seems to be for requesting other editors to write standalone pages. I only want to unprotect this page and make it into a redirect.

While content can be translated from another language, you must attribute where you got it from (usually via edit summary) and check to see that it complies with policies on this Wikipedia project, particularly verifiability.

    @రుద్రుడు చెచ్క్వికి: This is the help desk for the English Wikipedia. You appear to be asking about some other Wikipedia. You will need to ask on their help desk, since different Wikipedias can have different policies and conventions. On the English Wikipedia, a construct like this would allow you to code a non-free image in a Draft article that will not appear until the draft is moved into the main namespace, or perhaps added to an article before moving it from mainspace back into draft space. This could be useful because non-free images are not permitted except in main space due to our extremely conservative interpretation of copyright law. -Arch dude (talk) 14:27, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The code originally [2] said {{ #ifeq: {{NAMESPACE}} | బొమ్మ | [[వర్గం:తొలగించవలసిన బొమ్మలు]] | [[వర్గం:తొలగించవలసిన వ్యాసములు]]}}. It means: If the namespace is called బొమ్మ (image) then add te:వర్గం:తొలగించవలసిన బొమ్మలు which is apparently a Telugu category for images nominated for deletion. If the namespace is not బొమ్మ then add te:వర్గం:తొలగించవలసిన వ్యాసములు which is another category for pages nominated for deletion. The Telugu Wikipedia currently has no namespace called బొమ్మ (image) so the condition would be false no matter where the code is. However, long ago Wikipedia changed the "Image" namespace to be called "File" (దస్త్రం in Telugu) because it can contain other types of files than images. If the code had said దస్త్రం (file) then it would have tested whether the proposed deletion was of a file and originally used it to decide which category to add. The current version of the code has removed the categories so it does nothing. I don't know the Telugu deletion processes or language so I'm not sure whether something should be done other than removing the currently broken code.     I've already said this on WP:MCQ , so I'll just copy-paste the same thing here so I can get a faster answer:

    The tag on File:0x10c_logo.png says that it's protected by copyright but I think that it's in the Public Domain. After reading commons:COM:TOO Sweden (the country the logo originated from) and commons:COM:TOO US , I'm pretty sure the logo does not meet the threshold of originality in both countries.     I am not an expert in such matters, but speaking as a disinterested passer-by, it looks pretty original to me – my former profession included elements of typography and graphics, and I don't recall ever seeing that particular 3-D lettering style, so it's not just using a common typeface. My rule-of-thumb for non-originality would be "can you describe the logo in a few words that would enable someone to duplicate it accurately?" Some information on the village of Sarve is now at an Estonian statistics website with this search in English but I'm not sure what would be the best content to link to.     Can I make a page on "Tripper (Chess)" over redirect to Fairy chess pieces?

    Alright, so, first things first, the Greek Wikipedia has an article on this piece, whereas the English Wikipedia has a redirect to the page on fairy pieces. Am I allowed to replace the redirect with a new article on this piece?

    Hello. The (first part of the) answer to all questions about "Can I make an article about XXX?" is "Can you find several reliable sources, wholly independent of the subject, each of which contains significant coverage of the subject?".
    If the answer is "No", then you cannot make an acceptable article about the subject.
    The Greek article el:Ταξιδευτής (σκάκι) contains only two citations, both to Chessvariants.org. I'm not sure whether Wikipedia would regard that as a reliable source (The Chess Variant Pages quotes a description of it as "run by hobbyists for hobbyists"), but in any case the pages in question say "This page is written by the game's inventor, Ralph Betza", which means that it is assuredly not an independent source. So what you should not do is translate the Greek article, without finding more sources.
    It seems likely that the David Pritchard book would be acceptable as a source (it is published by a reputable publisher, though whether his role as the president of the BCVS would make it non-independent is not clear to me). But you would certainly need more sources, and preferably from writers unconnected with the society. ColinFine (talk) 21:42, 21 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

    New template category not populating?

    I recently created a new template, Template:27TeamBracket-3way (for a three-round knockout tournament with three competitors per match; see Celebrity Jeopardy! (2022 TV series) for an example) as well as a parent category, Category:27-Team bracket templates, which I added the new template to via its documentation, the same way that similar templates like Template:9TeamBracket-3way was added to a similar category. I'm aware there's sometimes a caching delay with categories, but it's been several days and it hasn't shown up, and the category has been tagged for speedy deletion as empty.     @Wordreader: You can search the project namespace with wp: in front of a search. wp:"she said" doesn't give relevant results but wp:shesaid finds a tab at Wikipedia:WikiProject Wiki Loves Women linking to meta:Wiki Loves Women/SheSaid. Some initiatives are at Meta which is not searched by our search box but you can start a search at meta: where meta:SheSaid redirects to meta:Wiki Loves Women/SheSaid.     (1) For some reason, you've got © Future US, Inc. Full 7th Floor, 130 West 42nd Street, New York, NY 10036 within the value for "journal=". Simply delete it. (2) We read: Since 2008 this land has been held by David Matthews, whose eldest son James Matthews is married to Pippa Middleton, sister to Catherine, Princess of Wales. Does "held" mean "owned"; and if not, what does it mean? A representative sample: In 1894 Edward Marjoribanks, 2nd Baron Tweedmouth had inherited the Glenaffric and Guisachan estates from his father. His wife, the Baroness Tweedmouth, was born Lady Fanny Spencer-Churchill, the daughter of the 7th Duke of Marlborough, and died at Glen Affric Lodge in 1904. Known in the highlands as the Lady of Glenaffric and Guisachan, she was reported to be a "lover of the golden retriever dog".     Trull Service is one of the notable mineral management companies which was founded in 1910 by B.W. Trull. Trull relocated to Midfield, Texas near the Texas Gulf Coast, and quickly began acquiring land while developing his business through agricultural and oil and gas endeavors.

    @Trullservice9: Before you edit any further, please
    1. Read the policy about paid contributions and do the appropriate (mandatory) disclosure, assuming you are an employee / contractor for Trull Service
    2. Because usernames implying shared use are not allowed, go to Special:GlobalRenameRequest and ask for a change of username to something specific to the person rather than the company. (For instance, "JohnDoeAtTrullService" is fine.)
    Once that’s done, please read about Wikipedia’s specific notion of "notability". It does not mean "worthy of being noted", it means "already noted". That is proven by sources that are (1) independent of the subject, (2) reliable, and (3) deal with the subject at length. In 99% of cases, that would be in-depth newspaper articles.
    In a cursory web search, I found nothing proving that Trull Service is notable under Wikipedia’s definition of the term. However, it is very possible that non-online sources exist, or paywalled sources, or industry-specific sources that do not come up high in online searches, etc. Do you have anything?     If you are talking about the block of information which Google often shows, that is Google's affair, not Wikipedia's. It often draws information from Wikipedia (which it is entitled to do), and many people mistakenly think it all comes from Wikipedia.
    If there were a Wikipedia article on Trull Service, it is likely that Google would display a block including infornation from there. But Wikipedia has no control over how Google uses its information. As others have explained, there can be a Wikipedia article on the company only if it meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability.     MOS:BOLD says this:

    For semantical emphasis (to denote importance, seriousness, or urgency), you can also use the HTML element <strong>...</strong>, or the template {{strong}}. This is desirable because the words can stand out for text to speech and other software, important due to accessibility issues.

    It then contradicts this in the When not to use boldface section:

    Avoid using boldface for emphasis in article text. Instead, use HTML's <em>...</em> element or the {{em|...}} template (which usually render as italic).

    I would suggest that apart from distinguishing the subject title of an article or associated words eg the Wikipedia Help Desk, there is very rarely any need for bold in standard article text, and almost never for emphasis. The {{em}} should be sparingly used, but even then the MOS recommends re-writing if possible to avoid the need for emphasis at all.     I had a question regarding translations and what articles are missing from the English Wikipedia. Is there a place where it shows what articles are on other Wikis but not here? For example, for the Russian Wikipedia, would there potentially be a list of articles there that are not here?     @Losipov, WP:WikiProject Intertranswiki is the place where such efforts are coordinated, and they have lists of various articles which they've deemed need translation. You could start at Wikipedia:WikiProject Intertranswiki/Russian/Biography, then move on to buildings, culture, etc. via the links at the top, looking for something which interests you.     The above user is correct. A pre existing photo would need to be uploaded by whomever owns the copyright to it, that is almost always the photographer. Unless you had a contract with the photographer assigning you the copyright, you couldn't upload an image you did not take.     "Disastrous" as colloquial hyperbole should never be used in Wikipedia (unless in a quote), and certainly not for anything as relatively trivial as a sporting season. "Unsuccesful" is less problematic, but it would be preferable to let the facts speak for themselves: if a team has come 23rd out of 24th in a league and been relegated, just say so – "unsuccessful" is redundant.     Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. And if the subject meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability (that is, there is enough material published about them), then an article can be written even if they object to it.     Hello, I have noticed that on a non-administrator's user page edits seem to be made every now and then without there being any recording of such in the revision history. I am simply wondering how this takes place as I assumed only administrators had access to Revision deletion, unless it is related to MediaWiki interface. For example my contribution here on May 7 was subsequently suppressed when an admin removed from the page a group of inappropriate edits and my valid edit became "collateral damage".     Is it possible to query for literal "%" [percent] sign in advanced page search

    I was trying to do find previous discussions of prevalence figures in talk archives of ADHD. To this end, I thought it would be useful to search for the presence of the two search terms "prevalence" and the literal percent character "%": example query. However, when I enter these terms into advanced search, the percent character seems to be ignored. Is there a workaround? To show that % doesn't seem to have any effect at all, check this search for presence of "prevalence" and absence of word "%".     [Edit Conflict] :In the General Electric article is the statement "On May 21, 2007, GE announced it would sell its GE Plastics division to petrochemicals manufacturer SABIC for net proceeds of $11.6 billion. The transaction took place on August 31, 2007, and the company name changed to SABIC Innovative Plastics, with Brian Gladden as CEO.[169]" There are several other mentions of this in the article, it is also mentioned in the SABIC article – search it for "Innovative Plastics" or just "Plastics".
    The GE Plastics article created in 2004 was always very short, and was redirected to General Electric before being re-redirected to SABIC.
