Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Education

This is a collection of discussions on the deletion of articles related to Education. It is one of many deletion lists coordinated by WikiProject Deletion sorting. Anyone can help maintain the list on this page.

Adding a new AfD discussion
Adding an AfD to this page does not add it to the main page at WP:AFD. Similarly, removing an AfD from this page does not remove it from the main page at WP:AFD. If you want to nominate an article for deletion, go through the process on that page before adding it to this page. To add a discussion to this page, follow these steps:
  1. Edit this page and add {{Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/PageName}} to the top of the list. Replace "PageName" with the relevant article name, i.e. the one on the existing AFD discussion. Also, indicate the title of the article in the edit summary as it is particularly helpful to add a link to the article in the edit summary. When you save the page, the discussion will automatically appear.
  2. You should also tag the AfD by adding {{subst:delsort|Education|~~~~}} to it, which will inform editors that it has been listed here. You may place this tag above or below the nomination statement or at the end of the discussion thread.
There are a few scripts and tools that can make this easier.
Removing a closed AfD discussion
Closed AfD discussions are automatically removed by a bot.
Other types of discussions
You can also add and remove other discussions (prod, CfD, TfD etc.) related to Education. For the other XfD's, the process is the same as AfD (except {{Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/PageName}} is used for MFD and {{transclude xfd}} for the rest). For PRODs, adding a link with {{prodded}} will suffice.
Further information
For further information see Wikipedia's deletion policy and WP:AfD for general information about Articles for Deletion, including a list of article deletions sorted by day of nomination.

  • Delete per nom and NLIST. Nobody outside the university (and no doubt a sizable portion of the student body) would care in the least. Clarityfiend (talk) 09:04, 13 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete Fails WP:NLIST. Georgethedragonslayer (talk) 05:01, 14 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. Student unions are not a level of political office that would satisfy WP:NPOL, so there's no important public service to be served in retaining student union election results for posterity the way we would for a provincial or federal election. No comparable article exists that I'm aware of for any other university student union either, and it's rather interesting that this only lists results for 2024 and a couple of 2023 byelections (but not the main results for 2023), even though the organization has existed in its current form since 2019 and its problem-plagued predecessor had existed since 1969 — but if there were any value in this at all, it would have to go all the way back to 1969, and the fact that it can't, because the university's own student media (a directly affiliated primary source that wouldn't constitute support for notability in this context) is the only possible source for any information, is precisely why this isn't of general public interest. Bearcat (talk) 18:12, 16 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete. University students' union elections are almost certainly not going to pass the general notability guidelines and the elected representatives certainly wouldn't pass WP:NPOL solely based on these elections. Ajf773 (talk) 04:03, 18 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete: I don't think a school superintendent is what's wanted under Political notability. Rest is simply confirming where he works and reads like a regular biography. Interesting tenure, but I don't see this as rising above all others in his position. Oaktree b (talk) 00:32, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete weakly: I accepted this article through AfC, but I realize now that nearly all other articles on school superintendents have some other notable quality besides being a superintendent. My mistake for missing that all the sources are local newspapers and that this isn't a particularly unique case. As a note the original author of the draft article hasn't edited since 16 August when the article was first created. Reconrabbit 01:27, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Reconrabbit No worries, I had to do a double triple take on it, before I realized what was going on! This is actually a really good case of where a professional probably wouldn't want their biography on Wikipedia, because they have far more narrative control in the routine public disclosures/look news. Sadads (talk) 11:54, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - Somewhat vapid as to content. Nothing here about what he accomplished, if anything, in his decade as superintendent. Nothing but details of how many times he got hired and re-hired for the same job. — Maile (talk) 02:03, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete - The sources are too poor (The Atlanta Journal Constitution is mentions only) to justify keeping the article, but there needed to be some decent sources, at the very least. For now, there are none. --Alon9393 (talk) 02:23, 15 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Article about a company which doesn't seem to meet WP:CORP / WP:SIGCOV. It cites 19 sources but if you look at them, none seem to be independent reliable sources about this company. The first is an article about 100 companies doing exhibits at an event in Malaysia, just a passing mention. References 2-4 are financial reports (first party primary sources). Reference 5 is the company's defunct linkedin, references 7 and 9 are websites of the company's products. References 13 to 19 are directory listings on a business partner's website. The Yahoo article is actually a press release. That leaves only the (deleted) PDFs of articles supposedly from Nikkei Sangyo Shimbun. I can't track down the articles at this time, but with titles like "System Technology-i and Delivering training over iPad device" they sound like more press releases.

Admittedly there's a language barrier, and the company is apparently no longer in business. But none of the sources currently cited are anywhere close to being the kind of coverage we'd need to see to establish notability. Here2rewrite (talk) 00:06, 11 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Well-established but ultimately non-notable school. None of the sources cited contribute anything towards notability, and a BEFORE search finds nothing more than the usual social media accounts, directory listings, etc. (If someone can find non-English sources that satisfy the WP:GNG standard, please do.) Declined at AfC but published by the author regardless, so here we are. Clearly fails WP:ORG. -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 16:42, 9 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Attempt to Add Citations - Hmm, I will try to see if there is anything that can be done. I will try to look for citations that makes proof that the school is notable. Many more might participate, if this page is seen by more, If there are not any citations or proof of notability, there is possibly a reason for deletion. BangladeshiEditorInSylhet (talk) 16:15, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Delete In searching newspapers I find her named in places like TV listings. These attest to the fact that she appeared on the named TV shows but those short sentences or two are about the plot and her character, not about her. These could be useful in recreating her career if there were also 2 or more substantial articles about her and in reliable sources. This I do not find. The sources given here are two short obits, an article saying that she won a student award (not notable), and a paragraph in a newspaper naming some roles she had in minor productions. I don't find anything longer than a paragraph, and nothing in major news sources. I can't find that she won a major award. I'll swing back by to check on progress, if there is any. • I would like to see some way to keep the content, and suggest a merge to Fuji Television. For the ones which are made by Fuji, which doesn't include Zen-chan (please, please, don't do combined nominations of disparate articles!). Not sure about Zen-chan, as like @Mushy Yank this came up as a single article for me and I hadn't given it any thought before starting this comment
On Pinch to Punch it's unfortunate that there is so little secondary material out there although it seems even the primary material has been lost. This attests to its importance in the context of the development of Anime. This article could be perfectly happy as a stub, verified by what little information is out there, but it's hard to make a case for IAR on this.
Keep based on the anime encyclopedia entry and the existence of multiple shorter sources in the en. article and in the jp. article. Although the encyclopedia is the only lengthy treatment found, the article subject is clearly a launching point in the history of Japanese anime. The article is verifiable and the project benefits (and has little to lose) from these stub articles. Since this is basically an IAR argument, I've struck my inconsistent comment above. I still wouldn't object to a merge as a backup. Oblivy (talk) 07:09, 3 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The issue with developing these articles would be our inability to access archives which would have information about an anime series from 50 years ago. Hard to imagine that Pinch and Punch, a series with 156 episodes airing on a national TV channel, wouldn't be notable with access to the correct archives. If someone is interested, perhaps Fuji or the National Film Archive of Japan can help? I would personally either keep or merge the articles at a minimum. Rejected PROD. A really odd source was added after the article was dePRODded; an individual author is credited, but it reads like a press release. I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 05:37, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • the SCMP article[=https://www.scmp.com/article/650729/kindergarten-appeals-staff] is a recruiting notice masquerading as a news article. Based on the author's history [2] including a lot of recent advertorial stuff, this could be a situation where she was doing paid placement but SCMP wasn't always disclosing what it was doing. I'm just speculating but there's nothing in the article that suggests anything other than parroting their hiring needs and requirements.
  • the Sina article[3] seems to be reporting on a press conference they held to announce their name change, and lacks evidence of independent editorial judgment. This was added by @Cunard who is a wizard at finding buried sources for China-related articles, but we sometimes disagree about quality. In any event this would just be one article.
Aside from that, the only independent thing I could find was this that name-checks them. Oblivy (talk) 06:07, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per the significant coverage in multiple independent reliable sources.

Specifically, under the strategic layout of diversified businesses, Eaton focuses on three major areas: family scientific parenting and family early development industry, infant and toddler care industry, and vocational education industry. ... Today, Eton has developed into a diversified business group with childcare, early education, kindergartens, camps, vocational education, family education and other sectors."

The article notes: "If teaching young children brings a smile to your face, then perhaps working for a fast-expanding mainland kindergarten will be an appealing career move. Etonkids International School, an international bilingual kindergarten, is about to open six more schools for its autumn 2008 school year and is in urgent need of passionate employees. Headquartered in Beijing, the school has branches in Tianjin, Nanjing and Shanghai, and will open more schools in these locations."

There is sufficient coverage in reliable sources to allow Etonkids International Educational Group to pass Wikipedia:Notability#General notability guideline, which requires "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject".

    Cunard (talk) 06:05, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

We had an edit clash - you can see above about my assessment of #2 and #3. I think paid research reports are narrow-cast, industry publications that fail WP:AUD. Also, sometimes I think they are portrayed as having lots of content so people will buy them. Oblivy (talk) 06:11, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I do not consider research reports to fail WP:AUD. Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies)#Publicly traded corporations says regarding public corporations, "However, sufficient independent sources almost always exist for such companies, so that notability can be established using the primary criterion discussed above. Examples of such sources include independent press coverage and analyst reports."

Analyst reports are "narrow-cast, industry publications" just like the ResearchInChina research report. Cunard (talk) 06:16, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Analyst reports on a public company, say, GM or Microsoft which might be of interest to many people. That's a different situation than an industry sector report which are targeted at selling just a handful of copies at a high price. We can't see how much material there is (for sure more than other schools, but it's a bit of a pig-in-a-poke) or where they got it from. Oblivy (talk) 06:27, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment: Since editors consider the earlier sources insufficient to establish notability, I did a more exhaustive search for print sources. These are sources that cannot be found in a Google search. It takes a lot more time to do this exhaustive search, so I usually do the Google search approach first. Here are the sources I found:

  • 1 - Beijing News[4] - this comes from an educational awards special supplement. It's bylined. There's an "acceptance speech" at the top but the rest of the article could be independent. It's all very praise-ful, but this one is weakly SIGCOV.
    2. Three Gorges News - a property development got Eton to establish preschool in the development, but the mention of the school is really brief and probably from promotional materials they provided. No evidence of independent analysis, and it's not very long.
    3. Science and Technology Daily - I couldn't access. The words "据了解" could mean they talked to someone from the school, or that they are doing independent research. It's just hard for me to tell.
    4. Information Times -- seems regurgitated from the school (it's a vibe thing)
    5. Wuhan Evening News - again, couldn't access but this seems like a report on an event involving the kids. It's actually kind of charming but it's still not a lot of content. So again weakly SIGCOV.
For the remaining, surprisingly I think #2 isn't a bad source - yes, they are getting information from the school but I think this is earned media rather than just regurgitation because Oxford Review has to put it into a common format. #1, yeah, good old Global Times reported online rumors about Etonkids; - that they picked the school as a target actually seems to support notability, but it won't go anywhere becauase it's a perennial bad source. #3 - no, this is from a person associated with the school.
So, on my reading, we have:
    - zero in the article (per above),
    - not changing my view on the research report especially since nobody on-wiki has read it
    - three weak significant coverage (Beijing News, Wuhan Evening News, Oxford)
At the moment I'm keeping my vote at delete. But I will consider and would encourage editors to consider whether there are good reasons not to be too hard on the sourcing.
And as always, well done @Cunard. Even trying to find your sources online is hard for me, and I always appreciate seeing what you come up with. Oblivy (talk) 13:45, 17 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your feedback. While I understand the concerns regarding WP:SIGCOV and WP:GNG, I believe there is potential to expand the article with more independent, reliable sources to meet these notability guidelines. The current sources may indeed include affiliated or directory-based content, but this does not negate the possibility of finding significant coverage through further research. I am committed to addressing this by seeking out local news archives, academic references, or governmental publications that cover the institution's contributions to education or its impact in the community. Like pretty much every student organization or team, this WP:ROTM high school band is not notable and should not have a standalone article: fails WP:CLUB and WP:NMUSIC. Sources are non-independent, very brief mentions, or routine local news similar (WP:AUD) to that my own high school's band received. Most content is fluff about personnel and awards received by countless competitive youth groups (11th place finalist, regional champion, etc). There are a lot of student contests and appearances out there like these every year, and even winning multiple times is not basis for an article. May be redirected to Plymouth-Canton Educational Park#Marching band.

I don't believe there are any other individual high school band articles, and similar AFDs include Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pequannock Township Marching Band (2nd nomination), Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Barnstable High School Marching Band, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Reeths-Puffer Marching Band, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Deep Run Marching Wildcat Band, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Stafford High School Tribe of Pride Marching Band, Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Redlands Terrier Marching Band Reywas92Talk 22:10, 14 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

  • Keep When I see this source, I am convinced that this band is notable. The edit history of the article in question is also interesting. The Banner talk 00:38, 15 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
A four-sentence blurb in the local paper? That's not substantive and is precisely what WP:AUD is for. Newspapers regularly cover local schools' football, basketball, band, academic, and other accomplishments, but we should not have separate articles for every one of those student organizations because they've won something. This should be summarized in the main article, not a separate respository for cruft like the staff (WP:RFCSCHOOLADMIN) and events attended. Reywas92Talk 01:01, 15 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Keep per WP:NBAND#9. They won a prestigious band competition in 1990, 1991, and 1999.
Re: regional media, major media treatment in:
  • Indy Star [8]
  • Detroit Free Press [9]
On another (admittedly slightly WP:ILIKEIT) note, this little school has had an amazing run of success with its marching band. I think we would barely bat an eye at keeping an article about a football team with three national championships. Its article has survived two previous AfD's. What's the sudden urgency to call this article "cruft" and remove it? Oblivy (talk) 01:28, 15 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
That's absurd and utterly overly broad to claim NBAND with that. Dozens of schools have won and placed in this competition and dozens more have won other band competitions. This should be recognized in the school's article, not as a standalone article for the student group.
The Indy Star did not actually cover this: as you can see with "Observer life" in the top left, it was covered by a reporter of the local Michigan site Observer (hosted by Hometown Life), and it was not actually published in the Star but https://www.hometownlife.com/story/life/community/observer/2015/07/23/go-blue-cep-band-kellogg-park-plymouth/30579317/ there]. The second link is also the local Canton Observer, not the larger but also local Detroit Free Press, and in the "Local news" page, where they also cover the high school drag race team, an automotive detailing company, and high school football, volleyball, and soccer teams.
I think we would barely bat an eye at keeping an article about a football team with three national championships. This is not true, we do not keep articles about high school football teams, because every school has a team, many have won championships, and student teams and groups should be covered in the school's article. Yet Baltimore City College football, which dates to the 1800s and has notable alumni, appears to be the only one.
Indeed, articles written by a member of the student group, with lists of "legendary" and "preeminent" staff and flowery language, are crufty and should be avoided. Reywas92Talk 20:36, 15 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Detroit Free Press article I was referring to is this [10]. There's a 2007 article which is a broken link. Sorry about that.
Regarding the IndyStar article are we really at the point of picking nits over where it was "actually" published? The point is that they get a variety of press coverage, and most of it reflects their multiple national wins (which kind of blunts your point about other bands winning the competition).
If you're not happy about the language used, then the article should be improved per WP:NOTCLEANUP and WP:ATD. Oblivy (talk) 13:19, 16 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Well-established but ultimately non-notable school. None of the sources cited contribute anything towards notability, and a BEFORE search finds nothing more than the usual social media accounts, directory listings, etc. (If someone can find non-English sources that satisfy the WP:GNG standard, please do.) • Procedural keep: While I acknowledge that high school articles are not automatically notable, there is a community consensus that a good faith WP:BEFORE that includes some print resources or local newspapers is needed, per this RfC. This is especially important given the underrepresentation of high schools from the non-English-speaking parts of the world on the English Wikipedia. TheJoyfulTentmaker (talk) 23:22, 1 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TheJoyfulTentmaker Not quite sure what you expected me to do about “print resources”. I don’t live in Istanbul so cannot pop round to a local library in Kartal, but there must be plenty of editors who do live in the city, so if they wish to find offline resources to cite to keep the article it will be easier for them than for me. Chidgk1 (talk) 15:14, 4 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
