ON-OFF-2ON Traffic Model for Packetized Voice over Wireless Both-Way Transmission Media

Published: 29 June 2008 Publication History

Abstract

This paper presents an ON-OFF-2ON voice traffic model applicable to wireless both-way transmission media. One particularity of voice traffic is that the ON period bursts of packets tend to be independently distributed, while the bursts during a conversation are strongly correlated. This particularity is especially important for WLAN/WMAN resource planning, because the both-ways (transmission and reception) of a voice dialogue are realized over the same common medium. Proposed ON-OFF-2ON voice model takes into consideration the dialogue bursts correlation. The paper also proposes an analytical method for evaluating the impact of voice dialogue traffic parameters on wireless access network performance. The suggested methods are illustrated with numerical examples. The approach suggested could be incorporated into the generic cross-layer design of wireless access networks.
