I completed a Women’s Leadership course. The course as a whole and what I got out of it was just very inspiring for me. I think by being curious as to what Dream to Be could offer and being bold, by taking the step to “go back to school,” I encompassed Target’s culture. I gained so much more than I expected, had fun while learning, and have been applying what I’ve learned about leadership to my role.

Mentorship Connections

Make the connections that matter. Create professional relationships that can enhance your team member experience or take you to the next level. Mentors, coaches and sponsors play a critical role in how we grow, learn and achieve as one Target team.  Target provides the tools to both find and nurture these important relationships, giving the space to mentors and mentees alike to support each other in their growth and development.

“The best piece of advice I’ve received from a mentor is that people may not remember what you said or what you did, but they will always remember how you made them feel. Put good into the world and it will be returned to you. Be present, be vocal, be a good listener, and be there how your mentor/mentee needs you to show up for them. We all need encouragement sometimes and hearing an occasional 'I’m proud of you' can lift spirits and make someone’s day.”

“Mentoring is a two-way street! Both the mentee and mentor should be able to learn from each other and use their time together growing and helping each other see true potential. Early on in my career, I believed that my work should speak for itself; through mentorship, I have now learned that isn’t always the case. Sometimes we need a different perspective.”

“Mentoring others is such a gift as it invites me to remain curious and helps me retain a student type mindset. Be courageous. Ask the tough questions, offer the challenging feedback. Lead as your authentic self...this has been so powerful for me in my personal journey as a leader that has a very different style.”

Associate Planner, Merchandising

I currently work as an associate planner on the pets team. When I did my gig, I was an associate buyer on the dairy/frozen team. I was given the opportunity to create the 2023 easter digital strategy for the candy team. I worked with category managers and the merchandising team to analyze the assortment in order to curate an online experience that our guest would love! I loved looking at the website this past spring to see my hard work come to life!

“There have been so many moments I have appreciated throughout [my] gig, but one that especially stands out is being given the opportunity to share one of my concepts to the cross-functional team for critique. Not only did I get experience presenting, I also had the honor of receiving and implementing team feedback into my design. The change I proposed went into testing and is planned to push into production!”

Headshot of Nick.

Through Prepare for Next, I have been challenged with many things such as communication, time management and problem solving. I have come across many scenarios where problems arise and I need to accurately communicate and address the main points. This was not a strong suit of mine when I first started but my leaders have helped navigate scenarios where I can best address these opportunities.

The area of Target's intern program that excites me the most is service and engagement, the front end. By giving a kid a sticker, smiling at a guest, telling them to have a great day and just being polite, small gestures go a long way.
