Quality Images
[edit]You have some great images. I would suggest you start submitting some to Quality images candidates, they are definitaly valuable. --Digon3 02:31, 7 November 2006 (UTC) ==
- Quality images (QI) are different from featured pictures as they are all self published images by contributors to Commons. Quality images don't have to be particulary extraordinary, impressive or outstanding among pictures in the Commons. All they have to do is to meet certain mostly technical quality standards, and be valuable for Wikimedia projects. All you have to do is submit it, and one person reviews and promotes or declines it.
- Featured pictures (FP) are the best the commons has to offer. They are voted on by everyone and are the "highest" category.
- Picture of the day (PoTD) right now is a little messed up. Anyone can put their photos on like here, whether featured, normal, or quality images. It is not voted on yet. A poll is being voted on that all POTDs must be either Featured pictures or Quality images. Don't worry about this category. If you have a featured picture (like you will very soon:), someone will put it up there.
Picture of the day, Featured pictures, Quality Images,
- There are currently no requirements to nominate anything (QI do not have to be FP, or vice versa) Hope this helps --Digon3 14:48, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
- By the way, if you want to see how you can improve and have your pictures critiqued: Go to Photography critiques. Also, QI is a good filter to see if the pictures are good enough (technically) for FP--Digon3 14:57, 7 November 2006 (UTC)

Picture of the Year - still on?
[edit]There has been little traffic on Commons:Picture of the Year/2006 recently. Are we still going to do this? If so, we need to decide the dates of the first and second rounds of voting, and make sure everything is ready to go (by 1st Feb?) I'm happy to help, but wouldn't want to do this on my own if no-one else has much interest. --MichaelMaggs 12:35, 22 January 2007 (UTC)

Coins
[edit]Thanks Jnpet! I still have a bunch of foreign coins I could shoot first. At the moment my time is limited and each picture takes about 2h. I'll come back to you offer if I run out of coins. But if you have a particular coin in mind I should photograph right away you can definitely send it to me. We can work out the details over email. --Dschwen 15:56, 23 January 2007 (UTC)
QI Archiving
[edit]Hi there Alvesgaspar. Have taken on archiving the QIC and I think I've grasped the process ok. However, I'm not so sure how to approach the QIC consensual reviews. Do you allow a certain time to elapse? If so how long and from what date? When archiving, do you archive all the comments of the CR? I assume the outcome is determined by the number of comments for or against, is it straight majority? Or is it like FP 3 to 1 majority? Would appreciate your advice. Jnpet 15:40, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
I'm glad you took over QI archiving, thank you. I gave up because that was too much work taking care of both FP an QI. The rules pertaining CR closing are explained in detail in the main section, and also in the Consensual Review section. My opinion is that a pic process should be archived as soon as the 48h grace period expires (or the 15th day). Texts remaining too long in the page transmit the message that nobody cares...Everything is archived in the log pages. Also don't forget to insert the pictures in the Quality Image pages and send the messages to the nominatores. I'll be here to help if you need. Good work! - Alvesgaspar 16:22, 24 January 2007 (UTC)
I think you should promote the newest image, since it is supposed to be an improvement of the original. But that is only my opinion. You are the boss... Alvesgaspar 17:14, 24 January 2007 (UTC)

I think this one was promoted to QI and archived too early... It has only 1 support vote (mine) and 1 against (Lestat's), beacuse Dschwen's doesn't count. So, it is a draw. Alvesgaspar 13:18, 28 January 2007 (UTC)

Image Tagging Image:Scolopsis_bilineata.JPG
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Scolopsis_bilineata.JPG. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use {{self|cc-by-sa-2.5}} to release it under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license or {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. What do you think? --Amada44 13:48, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, thanks for making those color corrections.
- May I ask what photo editing tool you used? And how you made the changes?
- Hi!
- I used photoshop cs 1. But any application which can do gradients will do. If you use photoshop I can send you a photoshop file so you can see how I did it. basically used the gradient tool and I increased the red channel and reduced took green and blue.
- should I overwrite your files with the new version? otherwise there are too many versions of the same file in wikimedia,... --Amada44 20:10, 7 February 2007 (UTC)
- Hi! jep, Gimp is cool! I did an edit for this Image in Gimp: . You can click on ->Layers->Curves and there on the 'curve window' which will open klick on ->Load curves and then load this file: [[1]] (of course you have to unzip first. This will give you an idea how to correct the colors with curves. --Amada44 10:57, 9 February 2007 (UTC)

Your image, Image:Pterois zebra.JPG on the French wikibook, is with the images en attente or Images on standby. They still have to decide what to say about it, but it surely will be something positive. Mind you, most images on that page, although they all have their merits, would fail on QI, if only because of their size. Regards. Lycaon 22:43, 2 August 2007 (UTC)

New year
[edit]New years often bring changes. You may be interested in this proposal, currently being discussed. Thanks for dropping the deletion request, cause I mean it when I say that I value your pictures as a scientist. Some of them are truly unique on commons. A happy New Year (with many good dives) to you too. Lycaon 06:51, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
- And happy new year from me to. I actually had you specifically in mind when I drafted that Valuable Image proposal yesterday. It has saddened me to witness the discussions about the delisting candidate at the CR at QIC. As an external observer I would like to say that I do not interprete Lycaons reviews as being personal attacks on you at all. I merely see them as his opinions about the contrubutions decoupled from the particular user (in this case you). Different users have different preferences and places the bar at different heights. Lycaon happens to be one of the users, which tend to set the bar pretty high regarding technical quality high at FPC and QIC. As I see it the sole purpose of this is to help us all improve our contributions and keep the standard high. I appreciate his reviews and observations although I may sometimes conclude differently when I add all things up. I hope this disagreement cools down again, such that we can continue to see your very valuable contributions at Commons.
- If you have any comments to my draft proposal, I would be happy to hear from you.-- Slaunger 11:55, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
Don't be discouraged..

A suggestion
[edit]Hi, I've seen & admired your underwater pics now & again and also noticed you tend to upload full-size files. You also get a deal of criticism over image quality, which I think is a little unfair.. If you downsampled your shots from the full 10MP to something like 2500x1700, a lot of the camera's aberration, compression artifacts, etc would just about disappear on their own, and you'd still have a very decent 4MP+ image to upload. Another thing to be aware of with compacts is that colour distortion is much worse towards the edges of the frame; when you're shooting, going a little wider and cropping afterwards will compensate, you could still downsample and you'd still have a good size pic. Happy shooting! --mixpix 08:56, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Hi Jnpet,
I'm still trying to figure out wikimedia - just registered, so consider me ignorant on pretty much everything here.
You have an image Incheon Airport6 that we might like to use for about 20 frames in video. I don't have time at present to read all the licensing stuff. We could pay you a reasonable fee (along the lines of what we'd pay for a medium rez image at istockphoto).
If this is something you'd consider, please give me a holler. I can give you a bit more info, and even send you a copy of the piece if you'd like. Hope this reaches you!
My direct email is jaycordova@mindspring.com.

Rhinopias -- weedy vs. paddleflap
[edit]Hi Jnpet, I think your image Rhinopias frondosa.JPG is actually a Rhinopias eschmeyeri, sometimes called the Paddle-flap Scorpionfish. See, e.g., Allen, et al., Reef Fish Identification: Tropical Pacific (2003, 2005), p. 373. Shall I change it? (I'm new here, so I apologize if this is not the best way to propose a change.) --Jason Marks (talk) 02:01, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
- Hi Jason, I've heard similar things, but my understanding is that Rhinopias eschmeyeri may not actually be a separate species. See Wikipedia:Weedy scorpionfish article on Wikipedia. It is mentioned there. Cheers! Jnpet (talk) 11:00, 8 January 2012 (UTC)
Jens, thanks very much for the info, I had not heard that before. I will try to do a little more digging on that point and perhaps contribute a note on the Wikipedia page for R. eschmeyeri. -- Jason Jason Marks (talk) 05:37, 9 January 2012 (UTC)
From inside a modern jetway at Incheon International Airport serving Seoul, Korea, 19 September 2007.
[edit]Dear Jens Petersen:
Please forgive me for writing you related to the photograph published here:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/51/Incheon_Airport6.JPG
It is not my intention to annoy you with communications like this one, but I want to use that photograph in commercial publishing projects.
Right now I have your photograph in a commercial webpage of mine, available here:
I have done this in the firm belief that the "Creative Commons" license for free commercial reproduction attached to that picture is accurate, current and valid. As requested, I have inserted all the information related to that photograph, its author and its royalty-free reproduction license in the colophon at the end of the page.
Unfortunately, I have had some negative experiences with the "Creative Commons" and similar free licenses (people backing from the free-commercial-use of the license, vandalism concerning the true author of the photograph, etc.) Therefore, much to my regret, I am forced to ask you a more formal written statement granting me, if you so wish, your permission to reproduce, royalty-free, in a non-exclusive, non-time-limited, worldwide fashion, the photograph that you credit to you.
I am hereby asking you your kind permission to reproduce and distribute that photograph in a printed book, in an electronic version of my book and in other associated mass distribution media, for example my aforementioned Internet Website. Please note that these are commercial ventures. Of course and as expected, full credit will be given where it is due and appropriate copyright claims or notices related to that photograph will be included.
Once again, please excuse me for stretching your patience, but I would really be glad if I could count with your kind formal written permission. Thank you very much for your diligent attention.
Sincerely yours,
Aldo Loup.
I will be awaiting your written reply at my personal e-mail address: aldoloup@hotmail.com
P. S.: In case you are not the sole and only copyright owner of the requested material so that these copyrights are shared with others, I would appreciate any information you can provide me about anybody else I should contact.
Photo usage
[edit]Hi, I'm working on an educational videogame with which I'm trying to build a bridge between animal awareness and Pokemon fans among others. It started out as something small and I contacted you before, but it's getting bigger and more professional and I wanted to make sure you were ok with it.
It's regarding these pictures: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Antennarius_striatus3.JPG http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Pterois_volitans_Manado-e_edit.jpg http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Hapalochlaena_lunulata2.JPG
I would like your permission to use them under those licenses with the following attribution: Jens Petersen
Also, because I want to make sure there's no misunderstanding, you are the original photographer correct? It sometimes happens that another person simply takes a picture from somebody else and uploads it to wikipedia with a license to distribute. That is why I'm asking.
There is more information on the game here, including a short video that tells a little bit about the background: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/238178285/animalalbum
I also have a demo version of the game available so you can see for yourself in what way the pictures are presented: http://dromedarydreams.com/index/demo/0-8
Please let me know if I have your permission, if the pictures are yours and if you want a different attribution.
With kind regards, Sjors Jansen (all.animalalbum@gmail.com) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Garfunkel_Jansen
- Thanks a lot! I'll do my best to turn it into a great game.
