La Nouvelle-Calédonie est un archipel d'océanie situé en Mélanésie — situé à quelques degrés au nord du Tropique du Capricorne. C'est une collectivité d'outre-mer rattachée à la France — dont elle est distante de près de 20 000 kilomètres — à statut particulier depuis la signature des accords de Nouméa dans l'attente d'un référendum local prévu le 4 octobre 2020 sur son indépendance ou son maintien au sein de la République française. Sa superficie est d'environ 19 100 km². Elle est située dans l'océan Pacifique à 1500 km à l'est de l'Australie et à 2 000 km au nord de la Nouvelle-Zélande.

English New Caledonia - New Caledonia

New Caledonia is a sui generis overseas collectivity and a constituent part of the French Republic. It consists of a main island (Grande Terre) and several smaller islands located in the region of Melanesia in the southwest Pacific Ocean. It lies near ► Vanuatu, ► Fiji, ► Norfolk Island, ► New Zealand, and ► Australia. Since 1986, the United Nations Committee on Decolonization has included New Caledonia in the United Nations List of Non-self-governing Territories. In a referendum to be held on October 4, 2020, New Caledonia will decide whether to remain part the French Republic or to become an independent state.
