This past weekend, Greyshirts from the Ottawa Metro came together to honour the legacy of our fallen heroes at the National Military Cemetery, co-hosted by the Beechwood Cemetery Foundation. Under the clear skies, 17 volunteers, including first-timers and seasoned Greyshirts, cleaned the headstones of those who served and sacrificed for our country. This meaningful act not only helped maintain the dignity of their resting places but also brought our community closer as we reflected on the bravery of each individual commemorated here. “Jasper has given me so much in terms of rest and recovery, and I knew this was the time for me to give something back to this place I love so much.” Recently, one of our Greyshirts returned from their first deployment to Jasper and shared a powerful reflection on the experience. From the fear of stepping into the unknown to finding a perfect fit within the Situation Unit, Izzy’s story reveals the strength that comes from standing shoulder to shoulder with fellow Greyshirts and the resilient people of Jasper. Amid the challenges faced in Jasper, we've been deeply moved by stories of resilience and connection. One such story is about Jaymes' family, who, after weeks of uncertainty, found comfort in the cherished heirlooms that survived the fire. Thanks to our dedicated Greyshirts, they recovered incredible pieces handcrafted by their grandfather: a beautifully wrought iron gate showcasing his skilled craftsmanship, steel frames for ladder toss, and a special bike he built for Jaymes' mother. This bike, a symbol of her family’s love, was restored with a little elbow grease, allowing her to carry a piece of her history forward. Among the treasures was also the steel frame of a Singer sewing machine, a family heirloom passed down through generations. These items reflect not just their grandfather's artistry, but the unbreakable bond of family that no fire can destroy. As they carry their grandfather’s legacy forward, these heirlooms will continue telling their family’s story for generations to come. Help us support more families like Jaymes's.
