About us
The Canadian Red Cross is part of the largest humanitarian network in the world, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. We help people and communities in Canada and around the world in times of need and support them in strengthening their resilience. Emergencies The Canadian Red Cross mobilizes its vast network of volunteers to assist when a disaster strikes, working in support of government to deliver relief to impacted communities and people. The Canadian Red Cross also contributes to international disaster responses by raising funds, as well as deploying resources and trained aid workers to support the local Red Cross. Prevention and safety Through first aid training and water safety programming, the Canadian Red Cross helps Canadians be better equipped to prevent and treat injuries at home and in the workplace, as well as how to be safe in and around the water. Capacity building The Canadian Red Cross provides support to Red Cross societies around the world to build capacity to be better able to able to respond to crises. Community health The Canadian Red Cross delivers services to promote community health, in partnership with provincial governments. Fundamental Principles Our network is vast, but our approach is simple. All Red Cross programs and activities are guided by the Fundamental Principles of Humanity, Impartiality, Neutrality, Independence, Voluntary service, Unity and Universality.

Thanks to the Government of Canada (Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada) for their continued support of humanitarian responses in Türkiye and around the world.
It was an honour for International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC & Türk Kızılay to host His Excellency, Canadian Minister for International Development, Mr. Ahmed Hussen at the Turkish Red Crescent’s migration community centre in Kilis on Friday. It was a chance to showcase the important work of the Turkish Red Crescent in support of Syrians under Temporary Protection in Turkiye over the last 13 years, as well as update the Government of Canada on the evolving humanitarian situation in Turkiye and Syria, following the recent developments in Syria. Canadian Red Cross & Global Affairs Canada | Affaires mondiales Canada have been steadfast partners of our humanitarian efforts in Turkiye & Syria & we count on this continued support as we look ahead. Thank you 🇨🇦!

“The work we do, we do with our hearts, we do it out of love.” Volunteers like Gloria from the Democratic Republic of the Congo Red Cross are essential to support the ongoing mpox epidemic response efforts across Africa. The DRC remains the epicentre of the epidemic, with more than 8,000 confirmed cases of mpox this year. By directly engaging with communities, Red Cross teams are able to explain the risks for mpox, how the virus is transmitted, and how people can protect themselves. The Canadian Red Cross has deployed seven humanitarian experts to support the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC mpox epidemic response, including audio-visual expert Adam Tadros, who filmed this video.

In central Ukraine, many homes have been damaged due to the ongoing conflict, leaving many households in need of support. Ukrainian Red Cross Society volunteers help them with emergency repairs using tarpaulins, wood panels, and plastic film to cover broken windows and ceilings to protect homes from the harsh winter weather. With support from the Canadian Red Cross, the Ukrainian Red Cross (Ukrainian Red Cross) branches of the Cherkasy and Poltava regions are offering small grants to households who need assistance to repair the damages to their homes. This ongoing support of Ukrainian Red Cross activities is made possible thanks to the generous donations of people living in Canada.

It is now winter in Gaza. January is the coldest month when temperatures dip into the single digits. It’s also the wettest. The makeshift tents families have put up along the shore of the Mediterranean Sea offer little protection from the wind, cold, and rain. Basic items such as warm clothing, shoes, blankets and hot meals are not readily available or are too expensive. For the past 15 months, people living in Gaza have faced one challenge after another. 1.9 million people have been displaced from their homes. That’s roughly twice the population of the City of Ottawa. And with the majority of Gaza now too dangerous to access, displaced people are living in an area of approximately 48 square kilometers; just slightly larger than the city of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island (which has a population of around 40,000). We continue to support efforts of the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement to help ease suffering in Gaza. However, the aid that is allowed in is not nearly enough to meet the massive humanitarian needs generated by the ongoing hostilities. We take no side other than the side of humanity. We join our Movement partners in reiterating a call for unhindered access for aid into, and around, Gaza – including the north, and the protection of humanitarian workers.

In December, the Canadian Red Cross Manitoba Health Team partnered with the Keewatin Tribal Council Inc (KTC) to deliver an Enhanced Opioid Responder Training in Winnipeg. Over three days, 41 Community Health Representatives from 10 KTC communities came together to participate in hands-on, scenario-based learning. The training focused on equipping participants with critical skills to respond effectively to opioid-related emergencies. By the end, 39 participants successfully completed the course and earned their certificates. This collaboration was a powerful example of how locally driven action, tailored to meet specific community needs, can make a meaningful and lasting impact. While completing a routine walkthrough in the community of Inganda in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Red Cross volunteers saw José and, after determining he had mpox, immediately referred him to medical care at a nearby hospital. Working and engaging with people directly in communities like Inganda is one of the most powerful ways the Red Cross helps to educate people about the risks of mpox. Volunteers are able to speak to community members directly, assess suspected mpox cases, and provide referrals for medical treatment. The Canadian Red Cross has deployed seven humanitarian experts to support the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC mpox epidemic response, including audio-visual expert Adam Tadros, who filmed this video.

Many children have been uprooted from the only home they’ve known because of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and it’s having a significant impact on their mental health—especially during these formative years. To help provide much-needed support to those seeking refuge in neighbouring countries like Bulgaria, the Български Червен кръст / Bulgarian Red Cross , with support from Sesame Workshop and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies - IFRC , is implementing programs focused on the mental health of young children. The Youth team ( Български младежки Червен кръст / Bulgarian Red Cross Youth ) plays a key role in running these activities and has undergone specialized training to test a new play-based assessment tool in Plovdiv, supported by the Canadian Red Cross. This test project included new warm-up games and feelings check-in exercises which were highly enjoyed by the children. Overall, it created a safe space that allowed the children to freely express all their emotions with the support of the youth team. New assessment tools are key to ensuring programs continue to effectively meet the needs of those we serve.

Hospitals use a lot of water. When a hospital is located in a conflict zone where potable water is scarce to begin with, accessing the life-saving liquid can be challenging. At the 60-bed ICRC Field Hospital in Gaza, an entire team is dedicated to the provision of clean water and the maintenance of water and sanitation equipment. Daily, they pull water from a deep well, remove the salt and test it so it’s safe for drinking. To ensure nothing is wasted, water that is not desalinated is used for the toilets. Since the hospital opened in May of last year, more than 1,600 metric tonnes of drinking water have been produced. The Canadian Red Cross, with the support of the Government of Canada (Affaires mondiales Canada | Global Affairs Canada) and the public, continues to support the field hospital with personnel, equipment, and medicines.
