Description | unfitting image to be used because a better alternative does not exist or is not available due to legal restrictions. Don't use if item has P18. Value shouldn't be a generic placeholder. |

Motivation
[edit]A lot of Wikipedia articles, especially articles about events, use images that are not actually of the article subject. Jc86035 (talk) 17:03, 3 January 2019 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]- Comment I think it would be good to come up with another label. --- Jura 17:22, 3 January 2019 (UTC)
- Agree with Jura on the label being a bit confusing (eg a portrait is the best "representative image" there is!) but Support the idea in general. Andrew Gray (talk) 20:46, 3 January 2019 (UTC)
- Support the idea David (talk) 09:31, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
- Comment "placeholder image", "archive image", "file image", .. isn't going to work either. How about "image of a component similar to actual"? --- Jura 11:31, 4 January 2019 (UTC)
- @Jura1: I think that would be okay. It would be better if it were shorter but I can't think of a way to do so. Jc86035 (talk) 16:49, 6 January 2019 (UTC)
- Support "Related image", perhaps. Jheald (talk) 15:44, 7 January 2019 (UTC)

- Comment another point to sort out before creation: what could be suitable as a placeholder image added with this property?
Do we want a notable work of an artist? (likely not, item for a notable work should hold it). Do we want the usual "no free image available, please upload one" placeholder image? (neither). For films, can we continue to add images of cast at some event in P18 (likely yes). --- Jura 11:02, 8 January 2019 (UTC)- @Jura1: I think a notable work could be appropriate but I'm not sure. I would use this property for the film case (P18 would ideally show a frame from the film, or the film's poster; ideally the entirety of the film itself would be in video (P10)). Only some Wikipedias use the "no free image available" image, and they don't really add any value to the item. Jc86035 (talk) 13:38, 8 January 2019 (UTC)
- There is a property for film posters (at Commons). --- Jura 12:45, 26 January 2019 (UTC)
