Motivation
[edit]Through the Survey of Federal Science and Engineering Support to Universities, Colleges, and Nonprofit Institutions, the National Science Foundation (NSF) publishes a large amount of statistical data on federally funded research institutes in the United States. See here: https://ncsesdata.nsf.gov/profiles/site?method=showListOfInsts . Internally, NSF tracks their data using a unique numerical "FICE code" identifier, see here: https://www.nsf-surveys.net/FedSupport/(S(2515p4jguqfvbqesj2jq0jwc))/help/download_codebook.aspx . This proposal would produce a property to hold this ID, so that Wikidata item pages on research institutes would be linked to their respective NSF data. Such an ID is conceptually similar to the Microsoft Academic ID (P6366) property. Photocyte (talk) 18:19, 4 May 2019 (UTC)
Discussion
[edit]- Comment @Photocyte: According to en:FICE code this has been replaced by an "OPE code", which I think we already have a property for in Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System ID (P1771). Can you check? I'm not sure it would be useful to have the old FICE codes in Wikidata. Are you looking at a recent NSF report on this? ArthurPSmith (talk) 13:36, 6 May 2019 (UTC)
- Comment @ArthurPSmith: Thanks for commenting. I checked out your link, but I believe NSF is still using the FICE code. For example, if you follow this link (https://ncsesdata.nsf.gov/profiles/site?method=view&fice=2477), in the URL it says "fice=2477". I believe I was able to find a recent PDF that listed all the FICE codes, but its been awhile. Anyway, I probably don't have time to scrape all the FICE codes into the Wikidata, even if this property was approved, so if its cleaner to delete this request, or let it go into purgatory, I'm fine with that. P.S. turns out the PDF I remembered, I had linked in the motivation. It is the "download_codebook" link above. Photocyte (talk) 05:48, 18 April 2020 (UTC)
