Is it possible for you to explain why when I search for something, possible communities are above users?

Avatar

Answer: Hello, @fandomsareforlife!

Thanks for noticing! We can tell you this is just a little experiment we are working on. We’re trying to see if people seeking Communities is more useful than people seeking other individuals—you’ll find any updates over at @changes.

There are a lot of things coming for Communities. It is now in a kind of open beta with tens of thousands of participants, and we’ve been sharing roadmap updates and more in the Feedback community, for example—don’t miss it! You can find out more about this at the Help Center right here.

We hope you enjoy Communities. Thanks for your question! Keep ’em coming, folks.

I'm VERY excited about the upcoming communities. Tumblr has always been very vacuous and shallow with little to no interaction. Drive-by follows and likes do nothing to build a community and the messaging utility is almost useless. I'd like to suggest that you implement categories such as we had waaaay back in Geocities (THAT shows my age!) to make it easier to find similar interests. 'Fashion Avenue' (for example) was heavily populated by folks who loved fashion.

Avatar

As it happens, we’ve had just the same idea on this one. Great minds, and all that.

We are on the same page about categories, as you describe them here, and we want to do basically that. Same deal. Same energy. Stay tuned—with a bit of luck, it’s coming soon!

Communities is now in a kind of open beta with many tens of thousands of participants. You can find out more at the Help Center right here.

Thanks for your question! Keep 'em coming, people.

What changes are you expecting to be made to Communities before they are officially released and done?

Avatar

Answer: Hey there, @lunaeclipse1057-ao3!

First of all, we don’t have any real definition for being “done” with Communities! There is a long, long way to go, so we’ve been thinking in terms of milestones and releases.

We had a limited alpha release with only dozens of participants and then a closed beta with hundreds of participants—and we’re now in a kind of open beta with many tens of thousands of participants. We are still working to open the floodgates one bit at a time and get hundreds of thousands of participants.

But there are many millions of people on Tumblr. So you could say that we will consider the Communities feature released in a more official fashion, no longer “beta”, when we’ve built everything out in the native mobile apps.

There are a lot of things coming for Communities. We’ve been sharing roadmap updates and more in the Communities Feedback community, for example—the latest is here! Don’t miss it.

Thanks for your question! We are glad for your interest in Communities—we hope you like it.

Avatar

is it possible (or will be possible) to create lists? it's one of the few features i really like from twitter but as far as tumblr goes, the closest thing i can find is blog subscriptions, and that requires me to have notifications on + it's only one set of blogs, no tags

being able to create separate little tabs filled with different niches of tags and blogs i can just easily switch between would be so nice!

Avatar

Answer: Hey there, @yppngmtt!

As luck would have it, we have been experimenting with an idea just like this—which we call Collections!

We had it available as an experiment for a little while and learned a lot. Right now, it’s on the back burner as we work on Communities. But do stay tuned for more info, as we very much intend to return to this someday. And hopefully sooner rather than later.

Thanks for your question—and keep ’em coming, people.

Avatar

Will something like rss feeds be available for Tumblr Communities? Will communities be able to post to facebook or X(formerly twitter) or Discord or other online social regions?

Avatar

A great question! The short answer is that we have, as luck would have it, started opening Communities to the API. Find out more right here via @changes.

The longer answer is an even more emphatic yes—we hope to open it up as much as it can be supported. Public communities technically already have an RSS feed (because they’re shared blogs behind the scenes) but we just don’t have a friendly URL for them yet. Regarding sharing to Twitter and Facebook, we had to remove those integrations some time ago. For Discord, we are planning on using a similar set of features, like our existing Discord integration for communities.

Thanks for getting in touch here. Keep the questions coming!

Avatar

will we ever be able to search for communities to join? i would use the feature but cant find communities without digging

Avatar

Thanks for getting in touch. The short answer is yes: we are currently testing it internally.

You can find a wealth of information here in this little preview of Communities discovery. We’ve heard loud and clear that folks want a way for other people on Tumblr to discover your communities, and we’re working on a new search results page to do exactly that.

It was lightly leaked in the Admin Zone community for admins when announcing free-to-join communities:

Updating your community to free-to-join will make it appear higher up in the discovery features we’re building! This is the best way to get your community discovered.

We hope this is good news. Plenty more to come on this, folks.

Avatar

hello, how do we hide the communities feature on the nav bar? i am not part of any and will not be. this is very inconvenient.

Avatar

Answer: Hi, @brandycranby!

Thank you for your question here, we wonder if this might be a bug.

We will assume here that the nav bar refers to the bottom bar on the native apps. We have confirmed that Communities do not appear in the nav bar on web unless you’re part of one.

If you, or anyone else, see the Communities icon in the bottom bar, without being a member of a community, please contact Support.

Keep the questions coming, folks.

i have a couple of small questions about communities that i figured id compile and you guys can answer whatever

will posts made in communities show up on your blog? i’m assuming the answer to this will be no so as a follow up will you be able to see all the posts you’ve made in communities somehow? will you be able to reblog posts outside of communities into communities? I think this would be helpful for artists in multiple communities who could then just post their art on their blog and reblog it into their different communities. will sideblogs be able to post in communities?

(also any updates on collections now that communities are starting to be rolled out)

Avatar

Answer: Hello there @who-needs-sleep7!

All good questions. Let us address them one at a time.

Will posts made in communities show up on your blog?

No.

Will you be able to see all the posts you’ve made in communities somehow?

Not likely. We could introduce a tab on your blog that only you can see, like Likes and Following. But we should add here that it’s unlikely we’ll add something to the community feed itself.

However, we are going to be adding your posts from your communities to your blog backup—so you could get a list of them that way.

Will you be able to reblog posts outside of communities into communities?

Yes, you can do this today if you’re on web or in the latest Android app, and it’ll be coming to iOS soon—make sure you’ve updated your app!

Will sideblogs be able to post in communities?

We are working on allowing sideblogs to be invited to a community. Only one of your blogs will be able to be a member of a community at a time, however.

Finally, we can say that unfortunately there are no updates on Collections as yet—but stay tuned.

Thanks for your questions. Keep ’em coming!

If I create a community and am the admin of it, will my filters still work when viewing the community? I have a community idea, but I realized that something a lot of people would want to post in it is something I don't want to see. I don't want to ruin everyone's fun by making it against the community rules, but I would still like to avoid seeing it.

Avatar

Answer: Hey there, @maplerosekisses!

Your content filters should still work, yes. If they don’t, however, it’s a bug—so please let us know!

Right now, the only thing that doesn’t work the same as everywhere else if you’re a community admin or mod is blocking other users. This means that if you’re an admin or mod, you’ll still see posts and comments inside the community from people you’ve blocked—so you can moderate them. Otherwise, the filter overlays for content and tags should work exactly as you would otherwise expect.

Anything that doesn’t will probably require our attention. So file a bug report or get in touch with Support.

Thanks for your question, and have a good day!

I've set up a community and it has a few members, but the engagement is low. I think part of this is that there's no ability to reblog external posts into the community. Any chance that's on the table?

Avatar

Answer: Hi, @alessandriana!

Good news for you, here. Not only is it on the table, it’s already launched in the latest version of the Android app if you have it! It’s also coming soon to the iOS app, too. We agree—it’s extremely important. So we hope this comes as welcome news.

Thanks for your question, and keep ’em coming.

Avatar

I have a 2 questions if that's ok

One is regarding communities - how long till we find out if they've been approved? cause i made a few and i have no updates on them

Also why can't we send asks from our secondary blogs? is there a plan to change that in the future? is there a reason why we can't already do that?

Avatar

Answer: Hey, @fangirlghost-19!

One is regarding communities – how long till we find out if they’ve been approved? cause i made a few and i have no updates on them

You will be notified via push notification and an activity item when your community is approved. We are still processing some of them—apologies for the wait!

Also why can’t we send asks from our secondary blogs? is there a plan to change that in the future? is there a reason why we can’t already do that?

The reasons are purely technical, unfortunately. We want to do a lot more with secondary blogs, such as letting them send asks—we just haven’t had the time to do it. We have gotten some things done, like being able to reply as a secondary blog.

The good news is there is more to come, eventually! We have made note of your question and will have updates via the usual channels as soon as there is news to share.

Thanks for getting in touch, and have a lovely day.

Avatar

Will people be able to follow Communities instead of being able to just join as members?

Avatar

Answer: Hey there @indeedjaffa!

A little answer and then a long answer. The little: Eventually, maybe!

The long: This is something we had some early ideas about, being able to follow a public community like it’s a blog (technically, it actually is a blog under the hood). To start, however, we want to focus on the experience of joining and sharing the space. We think those pieces are much more powerful than simply being able to follow a community, which you could do via a group blog today.

However, it could be an eventuality—so watch this space on this one, and you will know where to find updates should anything change on this. Thanks for your question!

Avatar

Will you implement a private chat for communities? only accessible to members of a community?

Avatar

This is pretty unlikely right now.

We actually had a group chat feature a few years ago, and it didn’t work out. It doesn’t quite match what we’re trying to accomplish with Communities. It is also something we included in our first survey about what we should build next for Communities—and it didn’t score very highly.

That being said, it may make more sense to revisit this once more of the feature is built out and more people are using it. We want to create more ways to subdivide large communities, and a chat-like piece could eventually make a lot of sense.

Thanks for your question here, and watch this space.

Avatar

Hello, my friends and I have been using the community feature and having a lot of fun with it, but there are a couple of things we think would be good to have:

Being able to join with sideblogs (or at least post/comment with them).

Being able to post pictures/gif in the comments.

It would be cool to be able to add custom emojis/stickers to personalise each community experience.

Allow multiple admins or allow mods to add people.

Custom handles.

Ability to mute notifications.

Being able to make multiple channels. There’s already the poll one, the latest one, and the popular one (which currently doesn’t work) and it would be nice if we could make custom ones.

Thank you for your time! I know it’s still in test phase so there might be a lot coming that would make those suggestions redundant and we look forward to seeing it.

Avatar

Answer: Hi, @riverwithoutbanks!

We have good news for you. Maybe even the very best of news.

Thankfully, literally *all of those things* are on the roadmap! Every last one! So that includes muting notifications, adding admins, and joining with sideblogs—which will probably come sooner than the others. But we want to do all of what you’ve outlined above. Great minds, and all that.

Keep your eyes peeled as and when they arrive. We hope it will all be sooner rather than later, and you’ll be the first to know via the usual channels here at @wip and @changes.

Thanks for your question, and keep ’em coming.

Are there plans to make communities accessible in the mobile app? I am not currently in any communities, and when I click on a link to one it seems to open in the in-app browser. I have an idea for a community I might like to create, but I'm 100% mobile these days. What is the timeline on adding communities access to the app?

Avatar

Answer: Hello, @maplerosekisses!

There is a new “Communities” tab that gets added to the nav bar in the apps, once you’re invited to a community. Right now, however, we are intentionally limiting how many people have it because we’re still actively building it, and it’s not ready for everyone to have it yet.

It will be there for everyone someday soon, though. And we like to think this won’t be too long, which includes the mobile app too, we are glad to say. Once it is, you will be the first to know.

Thanks for your question, and keep them coming—we can’t wait to let Communities into the world!

Avatar

Hi,

The community I created got approved and I was looking at the different options and things before sending out invites or posting to say that people could ask for one. I clicked the button to invite members and it just showed a random list of accounts whereas I expected to at least get to pick from a list of blogs I follow and who I therefore know might be interested in joining.

It will let me search for people to invite, but I don't remember all the names of the blogs I follow to just search that way.

Are there any plans to at least make the default selection of blogs to send invites to be blogs you follow or who follow you? Would be way easier than having to flick between tabs to copy paste names.

Avatar

Answer: Hello, @alexafaie!

Thanks for raising this with us—it’s a good point.

We are glad to say that we are currently working on improving that list and have recently updated it to prioritize showing your recently-followed blogs. We hope this comes as good news!

Thanks for the feedback, and have a lovely day. Keep the Communities questions coming, folks.

Will there be a way to request to join communities? So far, the process to join one seems to be to message the admin of one and ask, which feels a little clunky and discouraging when you're not already acquaintances

Avatar

Answer: Hey there, @distantsobbingnoises!

We are so glad you asked. Feel clunky and discouraged no more, and hear us when we respond with a loud and proud: positive, affirmative, si, ja, oui, and yes, it's coming!

A way to request to join communities is on its way, and once we have more to share—which won’t be too long—you will be the first to know. Keep those eyes peeled, people.

Thanks for your questions. Keep ’em coming!
