I'm sure many people have already shared this here, but I think it's important that people here on Tumblr need to see this.

"I disagree with Kamala's position on the war in Gaza. How can I vote for her?" by US Senator Bernie Sanders

His question is NOT RHETORICAL by the way! Transcript for anyone who struggles with video:

“I understand that there are millions of Americans who disagree with President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris on the terrible war in Gaza.

I am one of them.

While Israel had a right to defend itself against the horrific Hamas terrorist attack of October 7th, which killed 1,200 innocent people and took 250 hostages, it did not have a right to wage an all-out war against the entire Palestinian people.

It did not have the right to kill 42,000 Palestinians, two thirds of whom were children, women and the elderly, or injure over 100,000 people in Gaza.

It did not have the right to destroy Gaza's infrastructure, housing, and healthcare system. It did not have the right to bomb every one of Gaza's 12 universities.

It did not have the right to block humanitarian aid, causing massive malnutrition in children and, in fact, starvation.

And that is why I am doing everything I can to block U.S. military aid and offensive weapon sales to the right-wing extremist Netanyahu government in Israel. And I know that many of you share those feelings, and some of you are saying,

"How can I vote for Kamala Harris if she is supporting this terrible war?"

And that is a very fair question. And let me give you my best answer. And that is that even on this issue, Donald Trump and his right-wing friends are worse. In the Senate, in Congress, the Republicans have worked overtime to block humanitarian aid to the starving children in Gaza. The President and Vice President both support getting as much humanitarian aid into Gaza as soon as possible.

Trump has said Netanyahu is "doing a good job", and has said Biden is "holding him back". He has suggested the Gaza strip would make excellent beachfront property for development. And it is no wonder Netanyahu prefers to have Donald Trump in office.

But even more importantly - and this I promise you - after Kamala wins, we will together do everything that we can to change U.S. policy toward Netanyahu. An immediate ceasefire, the return of all hostages, a surge of massive humanitarian aid, the stopping of settler attacks on the West Bank, and the rebuilding of Gaza for the Palestinian people.

And let me be clear. We will have, in my view, a much better chance of changing U.S. policy with Kamala than with Trump, who is extremely close to Netanyahu and sees him as a like-minded, right-wing extremist ally.

But let me also say this - and I deal with this every single day as a U.S. Senator - as important as Gaza is, and as strongly as many of us feel about this issue, it is not the only issue at stake in this election.

If Trump wins, women in this country will suffer an enormous setback and lose the ability to control their own bodies. That is not acceptable.

If Trump wins, to be honest with you, the struggle against climate change is over. While virtually every scientist who has studied the issue understands that climate change is real, and an existential threat to our country and the world, Trump believes it is a "hoax". And if the United States, the largest economy in the world, stops transforming our energy system away from fossil fuel, every other country - China, Europe, all over the world - they will do exactly the same thing. And God only knows the kind of planet we will leave to our kids and future generations.

If Trump wins, at a time of massive income and wealth inequality, he will demand even more tax breaks for the very richest people in our country while cutting back on programs that working families desperately need. The rich will only get richer while the minimum wage will remain at $7.25 an hour and millions of our fellow workers will continue to earn starvation wages.

Did you all see the recent Trump rally at Madison Square Gardens? Well, I did. And what I can tell you is that, as a nation, as all of you know, we have struggled for years, against impossible odds, to overcome all forms of bigotry - whether it's racism, whether it's sexism, whether it's homophobia, whether it's xenophobia, you name it. We have tried to fight against bigotry. But that is exactly what we saw on display at that unbelievable Trump rally. It was not a question of speakers getting up there, disagreeing with Kamala Harris on the issue. That wasn't the issue at all. They were attacking her simply because she was a woman, and a woman of colour. Extreme, vulgar sexism and racism.

Is that really the kind of America that we can allow?

So let me conclude by saying this: this is the most consequential election in our lifetimes. Many of you have differences of opinion with Kamala Harris on Gaza. So do I.

But we cannot sit this election out. Trump has got to be defeated. Let's do everything we can in the next week to make sure that Kamala Harris is our next president.

Thank you very much.”

Twitch is gonna start kinda censoring queer people and it would be really helpful if you could read the next few sentences and then also go to a link and click the word vote.

They're implementing a new rule where if you discuss "sensitive social issues" at all you have to flag your streams as such, these issues include things like war and political unrest but also any lgbtq topics (once again our existence is political).

Essentially a streamer will have to choose between never ever mentioning anything queer (or even just discussing their own life if they're queer themselves) or flagging every stream with "sensitive social issues" and scaring away 90% of viewers.

If you have a twitch account you can go here and log in and click vote. They do listen. Please vote.

This is literally the most voted on idea in twitch uservoice right now, at 4 times the votes of the second place idea. Good job everyone! Keep it up!

Comments have been closed. It's official.

This is the official tweet about it (and link below):

"Today, we’re expanding Content Classification Labels and adding a new content category, focused on political and debated issues. Content Classification Labels were built and designed to give viewers more control over what they see on Twitch.

Starting today, streams that include discussion of politics or sensitive social issues should include the new Politics and Sensitive Social Issues Content Classification Label. In our Content Classification Guidelines, we go into deeper detail on when this label should be applied, with examples, exceptions, and more. Streams that include conversation about elections, civic integrity, and war or military conflict, for example, are required to include the new label.

We’ll continue to build tools that let you customize your experience on Twitch."

Here's the official tweet response to backlash (and link below):

"We have made some updates to our policy language to better clarify what needs a "Politics and Sensitive Social Issues" Content Classification Label (CCL).

We want to make clear that you don’t need to label your stream if you’re talking about your lived experience. We’ve made this clearer in our CCL guidelines, which are linked below. We’ve also clarified that a label is only required if discussion of the listed topics is the focus of the stream.

Our goal here, as with any CCL, is to give viewers and brands more info about what’s happening on a particular stream, so that they can make an informed decision about what to watch and where to engage."

The updated guidelines as of November 4th 2024:

VII: Politics and Sensitive Social Issues

Twitch is a place for people to express themselves and discuss the world around them. We require streams to be labeled when the focus of the stream includes discussions and debates about political or sensitive social issues such as discussions about elections, civic integrity, war or military conflict, and civil rights. Examples of content that require a classification label include but are not limited to:

  • Streams featuring former or current political officials if the content includes discussions with these individuals around public policies
  • Live coverage or commentary on elections, civic processes, or election-related disputes
  • Livestreams of protests, rallies, or civil unrest related to civil rights issues or government policies
  • Discussing military conflicts, foreign policy decisions, or national security matters
  • Streams focused on discussing topics like gender, race, sexuality, or religion in a polarizing or inflammatory manner

Labeling not required:

Streams containing informational or educational content that aim to share knowledge in a neutral, fact-based manner, rather than engaging in any kind of advocacy for an issue or candidate. For example, sharing the history of how votes in the US presidential election are counted to determine the next President, or merely encouraging individuals to vote or register to vote.

Intermittent mentions of politics, politicians, or sensitive social issues are not required to have the Politics and Sensitive Social Issues label.

No label is required if you are speaking about your lived experiences on topics such as gender, race, sexuality, or religion.

Holy shit, Shapiro had his ass handed to him. This is so satisfying to watch.

You can see the exact moment Ben realized he fucked up when this guy fires back just as fast as he ever possibly could hope to

I don't know who needs to hear this, but it has been a central Republican strategy in the final week before an election to claim that the polls are breaking their way, that a red wave is coming, that Republicans are engaging in victory tours at least since the presidential election of 2000. (That's when I stopped watching CNN regularly, as the network promoted this line despite the fact that Gore would go on to win the popular vote.)

Given that Republicans have, in fact, only won the popular vote once in this period (2004), this is a strategy, not a statement of fact.

Don't sweat the narrative. Vote. Turnout wins, not news stories.

Gore won the popular vote, but he still lost the election. This is because the vote was close enough and there was enough question about certain ballots (ones that didn't have the holes punched through all the way and thus weren't counted properly by the machines) that recounts were demanded in Florida. The Florida Supreme Court sided with Gore in his quest to have all ballots counted, but Bush took the case to the United States Supreme Court, who ultimately voted against the recount continuing, effectively handing the presidency to Bush.

Right now, there is a 6-3 conservative majority in the Supreme Court. One of the conservative justices (Thomas) has a wife who was at the January 6th insurrection. Three others (Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett) were appointed by Trump. If the vote is close enough to go to the Supreme Court again, who do you think the Supreme Court is going to give the presidency to? Especially after said conservative majority already decided it was okay for Trump to do whatever the fuck he wants so long as he does so "as a presidential act"? It's not hard to imagine.

Don't listen to polls. Don't listen to narratives. Just get out there and vote for Harris. Voting for Harris is the only way to vote against Trump (vote splitting between Gore and Nader is the reason why the votes were so close in Florida). We don't want Harris' win to be a narrow one, because we don't want to run the risk that her certification in swing states is a decision left up to the Republican-packed federal Supreme Court. So please, get out there and vote.

Personally, while I would prefer people use headphones to listen to music in public, I don’t mind if it’s played out loud as long as the volume is not too high.

These kinds of disputes seem silly to us, yet these are the kind of mundanities of which the people of Gaza have been denied. For people like my dear friend Ola @olagaza, existence is now preoccupied entirely with the struggle for survival, and such trivialities must seem like a luxury.

It was not always this way.

Before October 7th 2023, Ola was a mathematics teacher and graduate student in north Gaza. Her days were busy, filled with studying, working, spending time with family and friends, and occasionally finding a little time to relax.

Her days are still very busy, but now with looking for food and fleeing IOF attacks. Ola and her family are starving, and Ola herself has previously been hospitalized for malnutrition. They were displaced from their home by occupation attack, and have been forced to move frequently, often at a moment’s notice, between shelter centers. If a shelter center cannot be found, they are forced to live in the streets.

The little food that’s available in north Gaza comes at extremely inflated prices. Ola is desperately trying to purchase enough food for her family to keep them alive, but she is feeling very despondent. The physical and emotional tolls of genocide weigh heavily upon her. Trying to survive is difficult enough. But having to walk miles a day, under constant threat of IOF aerial and ground attacks, just to hopefully find enough internet to be able go online and ask strangers to please care enough about her life to pay a little attention to her story is dehumanizing. And yet it is the only way her family can find food.

You can help lighten Ola’s burden by

  • supporting her campaign
  • reblogging this post
  • following @olagaza and boosting her posts
  • copy-pasting this link (https://gofund.me/89e42c74) across all your social media accounts

Please help Ola not have to fight this battle for survival alone

Thank you❤️

Lovely time for their two factor authentication to stop working. Trying to log in to vote on this and I'm just straight up not getting the text with my login code. Will try again later.

Definitely recommend you do this, but I'm also offering a warning I wish I'd had - Twitch will auto-subscribe you to updates from the thread, and instead of sending them as a batch they send each and every comment to your email separately. So you will definitely want to go to "Settings" in the corner of the page and unsubscribe from New comments under "Email notifications for ideas you support" in order to prevent an email flood.

I think Tucker has hit the Red Giant phase of right wing grifting. He's run out of reasonable clout hydrogen. Now he has to say increasingly wild shit to stay relevant, like a dying star burning it's own helium.

Wasn't there just a movie about human forces inventing nuclear bombs?
