Veeam Backup & Replication
Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform
We use Veeam Data Platform Backup and Replication for server backups and replicas. We have nightly backups and archiving setup for each server. We also have some archives being sent to an off-site NAS. We also use the Veeam ONE Monitor software to keep track of each of our server's resources. We get alerted for any errors and warnings via email. All of the software is integrated via VMware Vsphere.
Pros
- Backups
- Archives
- Resource Monitoring
- Notifications
Cons
- SQL Table recovery -- you are not able to restore a single table if it is above a certain size. Restoring a whole (large) database is very cumbersome.
- Some notifications are less important and could probably be ignored. More notification configurations would be helpful here.
- There is a slight learning curve to the interface/UI for Backups. It is fine once you learn it but confusing at first.
- Virtualized workloads
- Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
- In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
- Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
- Capacity Tier to store data within object storage for longer term retention
- Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
We currently have twenty three servers connected to our Veeam Data Platform software. Some of which are Windows, Linux, virtual, and physical. We are using Veeam Data Platform for the expected amount of servers when we first acquired it. All of our servers were compatible so all are utilizing the software from the beginning.
- Positive: Backups with quick recovery
- Positive: Cheap renewal
- Positive: Automatic off-site backups
Our previous backup appliance had a HUGE learning curve, a fair bit of manual processing, and was very expensive to maintain. The old appliance/software was so bad that we eventually stopped using it completely. We swapped to Veeam Data Platform to replace it for ease of use, more automatic processing and a more economical option.
We do not currently use anything that is cloud.
We archive some of our backups periodically to an off-site NAS. We do not use a special solution. We just have another archival job on the Veeam Data Platform Backup and Replication software specially for this.
