Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform
We are protecting about 100 VMs that have a combined disk capacity of 1 petabyte. Prior to using Veeam, we had difficulty completing file server backups, often running out of time, resulting in us not meeting our SLA. We also had issues with backup repository corruption. This has not been an issue with Veeam.
Pros
- Large volume backups.
- VM backups.
- Repository data compression.
Cons
- Repository management, allow administrators to rank the repository order to use.
- Repository management, based on prior backup jobs or a scan, reserves space on a repository. That way the space is low and another job starts, it will not cause the other job to run out of space.
- Licensing, seems like some of our VM are counted twice.
- Virtualized workloads
- Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
- License portability as your environment needs change

We have zero cloud, around one hundred virtual servers, and eighteen physical servers. This is the coverage that we planned for when we first purchased the product. Although since we purchased the product we have added licenses to cover new VMs that we spun up. Our physical server count has remained about the same.
- We have been able quickly restore research data for our staff.
- Users feel more secure about storing data on a server share as opposed to a keeping on their PC.
- With the ease of being able to restore a VM, patching or updating software on a critical VM is not as stressful.
The prior backup solution was not able to keep up with our infrastructure. So we did not have confidence in our backups. Users were concerned about the possibility of losing data. Often the backup repositories had issues with data corruption. This would result in needing to do a new full backup. The old system just took too much time to maintain.
Our organization has not used these Veeam features to store backup data. With the volume of data that we backup, we are able to use our own disk repositories at a lower cost than the cloud.
We do not use NAS in our organization.

Evaluating Veeam Data Platform and Competitors
Yes - Veritas Backup Exec and System Center Data Protection Manager. Veeam pricing is better and neither product did very well with the large amounts of data and clients that we are backing up.

We have a large amount of data that we back up and being able to within our backup window is important. Also, ease of use is an important factor for our staff.
We are very satisfied with our selection of Veeam. Most likely the only change would have been to start our evaluation process sooner.
