Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform

We use Veeam to backup our physical storage/website servers and planning to expand it also to VMs. Being able to create bootable media for the restore process is a big plus in case of hardware failure and using Veeam Backup & Replication will help also to restore physical servers into VMs. The Managementment application allows it with a very easy-to-use interface to manage backup jobs and monitor their progress and failures. In addition to the "on-demand" monitoring, we also integrated the Veeam job results into our check_mk based monitoring to have instant notifications in case a backup job didn't complete successfully. With the ongoing development of Veeam, they also rolled out a lot of interesting features with the latest V11 to backup databases (Oracle / MS SQL).

Pros

  • Easy to use front end to manage Backup jobs efficiently and review problems during job execution
  • Restore capabilities of physical servers to VMs or other physical machines with ease (including bootable media)
  • Snapshot support and restoring them with just a couple of mouse clicks

Cons

  • More API support to connect directly to external monitoring services/applications
  • Support more DBMS natively
  • More Deployment options of the server software to prepare setups that are brought to the customer
  • Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
  • NAS filers
  • In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
  • In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
  • Virtualized workloads
  • Enterprise UNIX servers running Solaris & IBM AIX
  • Enterprise applications such as Oracle or SAP HANA
  • Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
  • Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
  • Automating test restores to validate recoverability
  • “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
  • “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
Have 3 physical servers in our main office and are planning to replace them with VMs. It will remove the need of supporting and maintaining multiple physical servers in favor of a clustered VM host. This will reduce also the number of care packs and space required to place the server in the rack and air condition to cool the servers.
  • nothing as the CE is free
The IT department saw a couple of YouTube guides that explained the ease of all workloads we are using within the company. To test the application we set up a server and some clients and simulated disaster scenarios as HDD failure and swapping from different hardware configurations. Restoring the backups to a VM was a very easy process and that certainly impacted the move towards the product.
During our tests when we decided if we use the product we restored to AWS and Azure and it was really easy to achieve. In the future, we plan to use it in our main workflow and move away from physical servers in favor of VMs in the cloud. In addition to the tests, we are taking the next steps to set up our workflows for cloud use.
We have tried it with a QNAP NAS device and it was very easy to set up with the guides provided (very good documentation on the web and also YouTube guides are available). It is not our main use case and we plan to move away from physical devices to reduce the number of servers in general.

Do you think Veeam Data Platform delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Veeam Data Platform's feature set?

Yes

Did Veeam Data Platform live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Veeam Data Platform go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Veeam Data Platform again?

Yes

We like the restore options from physical servers to VM's which saves a lot of time to replace legacy hardware with future-proof VMs. Driver and legacy boot issues are easily resolved with the tools Veeam provides. Not so good is the support of non-natively supported DBMS like MariaDB (MySQL natively supported). If more DBMS would be supported it would make it easier for customers with not so mainstream databases.

Using Veeam Data Platform

50 - The product is used by different teams of different departments. The skillset is different in terms of understanding the complete product features but they can solve recovery cases without additional help of administrators. Setting up the different backup jobs are done within the admin team so that there are no cases of missing backups.
5 - The support team has trainings and on hand experience with the product and get help from Veeam support incase of software related bugs or issues that can’t be solved without researching the documentation or online resources. External help is rarely needed as the software is intuitive enough on its own.
  • Backup
  • Restore
  • Creating test environments
  • Research issues based on OS updates
  • Test Software Updates in Test VMs without affecting production Servers
  • Undelete files/settings
We satisfied with the license and costs at the moment but as seen with Broadcom VMWare license models can change or force into looking for alternatives. In future we plan to expand into different hypervisor environments and there we need to test the functionality that is needed for the business cases.

Evaluating Veeam Data Platform and Competitors

  • Scalability
  • Integration with Other Systems
  • Ease of Use
It integrated perfectly into the processes and was easy to use by all relevant users. As more different teams are using the software it was very important that the support calls were not affecting the productivity ofctge administrators as they have different main tasks and are supporting only as a side task.
Interoperability with different hypervisors would be the key thing that needs investigation. Proxmox and Citrix should be considered as potential working platforms for the operation environment and test cases to select products that can offer easy swaps without changing the background environment for backups and restore procedures as new software causes always issues in the setup and support within the teams.

Premium support wasn’t needed as the product works out of the box stable and without any major downtimes. Therefore additional premium support wasn’t needed and even the normal support wasn’t contacted much aside the initial setup process which is normal for establishing an environment and also build knowledge in the administering team.
During the initial setup process we had issues running the test installation process on a bit older operating system and the support provided us with additional patches so we could still test the software before we deployed it on the main infrastructure that had the latest version of the operating system.

Using Veeam Data Platform

The product offers robust and reliable data protection. Its user friendly interface simplifies backup and recovery tasks. Advanced features like instant VM recovery and comprehensive monitoring enhance efficiency. However, its complexity may overwhelm beginners but is manageable for administrators. Overall, Veeam Backup is a top choice for businesses seeking dependable and scalable backup solutions.
