Labour urged to stop the carousel of ministers

If there's one thing business wants from the Labour government it's stability.

As the table below shows, there has been a veritable merry-go-round of ministers in recent years, which experts say has undermined the effectiveness of government.

The churn rate for some of the Whitehall departments that cover business, finance and investment accelerated after the Brexit vote in 2016 as politics entered a new era of upheaval.

The incoming Work and Pensions Secretary Liz Kendall will be the tenth person to hold the role since 2015.

A constant chopping and changing of ministers is 'very damaging' and means they are focused on 'quick wins' rather than long-term policymaking, warned Institute for Government think-tank programme director Tim Durrant.
