     He fought in the First World War, and he was mentioned in despatches.3 He gained the rank of Captain in the Royal Army Service Corps.1 He was member of the War Material Commission between 1919 and 1920.1 He was member of the Control Commission of Germany and Austria between 1946 and 1947.1

     Lt.-Col. Alexander Shepstone Godley was born on 9 August 1900.2 He was the son of Godfrey Archibald Godley and Ruth Shepstone.3 He married, firstly, Zara Valda Mari Kirby, daughter of Major George Henry Kirby and Alice Marie Maitland, on 30 October 1928.2 He married, secondly, Margaret Kathleen Connell, daughter of Lt.-Col. Charles Walter Connell, on 29 January 1946.2 He died on 17 October 1980 at age 80.1,4
     He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the Royal Scots.2 He gained the rank of officer between 1922 and 1925 in the Royal Air Force.2 He was Aide-de-Camp between 1927 and 1928.2 He was Garrison Adjutant of Dover and Catterick between 1927 and 1931.2 He fought in the Second World War, in Singapore, Ceylon, Burma and India.2 He was commander of the 1st/8th LF and 23 British Indian Brigade Group in 1946.2 He was Commandant of the Intelligence Corps Training Centre between 1948 and 1950 at Sussex, EnglandG.2
