     Charles Synge Christopher Bowen, Baron Bowen of Colwood was born on 29 August 1831 at Woolaston, Monmouthshire, Wales^G.¹ He was the son of Reverend Christopher Bowen and Catherine Steele.¹ He married Emily Frances Rendel, daughter of James Meadows Rendel and Catherine Jane Harris, on 7 January 1862.² He died on 10 April 1894 at age 62 at Princes Garden, London, England^G, 'from a cruel disease, borne with exemplary patience', without issue.¹ He was buried at Slaugham, Sussex, England^G.² His will was proven (by probate), at £26,994.²

     Liddell writes that "he had that almost exaggerated sauvity and politeness which characterised Oxford men in the fifties."² Lord Esher declared that Bowen "was the most distinguished Judge who had sat in an English Court during the long period [more than 50 years] of his acquaintance with the the occupants of the English bench."²

     Reverend Christopher Bowen was the son of Christopher Bowen and Eliza Miller.² He married Catherine Steele, daughter of Sir Richard Steele, 3rd Bt., in 1833.² He died in 1890.²
     He was the Rector at St. Thomas's, Winchester, Hampshire, England^G.¹ He lived at Hollymount, County Mayo, Ireland^G.¹

     Catherine Steele was the daughter of Sir Richard Steele, 3rd Bt.¹ She married Reverend Christopher Bowen, son of Christopher Bowen and Eliza Miller, in 1833.²
     From 1833, her married name became Bowen.²

     Sir Richard Steele, 3rd Bt. was the son of Sir Parker Steele, 2nd Bt. and Maria Verity.
     He succeeded as the 3rd Baronet Steele [I., 1768].

     Frances Steele was the daughter of Sir Richard Steele, 3rd Bt.¹ She married John Synge, son of Francis Synge and Elizabeth Hatch, in 1832.² She died in 1859.²
     From 1832, her married name became Synge.²

     Richard Millington Synge was born on 10 August 1889.¹
