How to use the new Guardian Editions app

New to Guardian Editions or updated your app to discover an unfamiliar interface? Here is our go-to guide

We’re pleased to announce the release of our new Guardian Editions app, which we hope delivers an intuitive reader experience, closer to that of our printed newspapers. We know many of you will have questions about how to use it, so here’s a guide to get you started. Read on to find out how to make the most of the new app.

If you are struggling to access or download the new app, please see our Editions app FAQs page.

1. When are editions published?

Please be aware that no newspaper is printed on Christmas day, and therefore no digital edition.

PDFs of each day’s editions are available from 4.30am.

We aim to publish interactive features for newspapers and magazines by 6.30am every day.

If you downloaded a PDF before interactive features were applied, you may need to refresh your app to see the updated edition. Simply drag down from the top of the ‘Home’ screen or ‘Previous editions’ screen to see your latest editions.

2. How do I navigate through an edition?

Editions app: how do I navigate through an edition?

When you first explore the new interface, you will see there are three ways to read your editions:

To read the edition as a print newspaper or magazine

1 On the ‘Home’ screen that opens as you first enter the app, tap the issue you want to read to download the edition to your device.

2 Swipe left through the PDF edition as it appears in print, and zoom in to read.

To read articles in the newspaper in an enlarged, accessible text view rather than a PDF

1 In the PDF edition, tap any highlighted article to bring up a text view with an enlarged font that you can adjust in size by tapping the ‘AA’ icon.

2 Swipe left from this text view to read every article in the edition, without needing to return to the PDF view.

3 To return to the PDF view without losing your place in the edition, tap the miniature image of the newspaper in the bottom right corner of the text view screen.

To scroll through all articles in the newspaper, using the accessible text view

1 In the PDF edition, tap the ‘A≡’ icon at the button of the screen to see all articles in the edition. You can scroll through these without needing to return to the PDF view.

2 To return to the PDF view without losing your place in the edition, tap the miniature image of the newspaper in the bottom right corner of the text view screen.

Why isn’t the accessible text view available for all printed articles?

We aim to publish interactive versions of our newspapers and magazines by 6.30am each day.

To access editions that have been updated with interactive features, or with any changes we make throughout the day, firmly drag down from the top of the ‘Home’ screen or ‘Previous editions’ screen to see your latest editions.

For some of our print formats with more complex layouts, such as recipes and TV listings, we have disabled this text view to ensure our journalism renders correctly. You can read magazines by zooming into the PDF. We will be making continuous improvements to the app, including the rollout this text view to magazines in early 2025, so please make sure to keep your app updated for access to new or improved features.

3. How do I play interactive crosswords?

To play interactive crosswords

1 On the ‘Home’ screen that opens as you first enter the app, tap the ‘Puzzles’ icon at the bottom of the screen

2 On the ‘Puzzles’ screen, use the drop-down boxes to select any date and the available crosswords from that day

3 Tap the grid to input the answers. You can use the ‘Check this’, ‘Reveal this’, ‘Clear this’ and ‘Anagram helper’ buttons to help. The clues are also listed underneath the crossword (you may have to scroll down to see them).

Note: you must be connected to the internet to play interactive puzzles.

If you prefer doing your crosswords by hand, iOS users can print them from the pages they appear within the PDF. Like the previous Editions app, puzzles such as Sudoku, Word Wheel and Suguru are not yet interactive, and so can also be printed should you wish to complete by hand.

4. How do I adjust the font size and readability settings of an article?

To adjust the font size of articles

In the PDF edition, tap any highlighted article to bring up a text view with an enlarged font that you can adjust in size and brightness by tapping the ‘AA’ icon.

To listen to articles, instead of reading

1 In the PDF edition, tap any highlighted article to bring up a text view.

2 Tap the Audio icon at the bottom of the screen to access the native text-to-speech audio feature. You can adjust volume, speed and tap the ‘>>’ icon to listen to the next article.

3 Alternatively, you can use your own device’s native text-to-speech feature in ‘Settings’ (See below).

To adjust your accessibility settings

1 On the ‘Home’ screen that opens as you first enter the app, tap on the ‘More’ icon in the bottom left of the screen to bring up ‘Settings’.

2 In ‘Settings’, tap to switch on your own device’s native text-to-speech and switch on dark mode.

5. How do I find previous editions?

To locate a previous edition

1 Press the ‘Home’ tab, and then the grey link in the top right-hand corner called ‘Previous editions’.

2 This will take you to a screen showcasing all of the Guardian and Observer editions and supplements.

3 Selecting one will take you to a 90-day archive of previous issues, from which you choose an issue.

6. Why might I spot anomalies in the accessible text view?

The Guardian Editions app takes our print publications and renders them in native app formats.

Occasionally, you might see an anomaly in the accessible text presentation of our zoomable PDFs. We understand that this could disrupt your reading experience, and we are very sorry for any frustration this causes. We are actively working to reduce the likelihood of anomalies occurring in the future.

Each day, we try to solve anomalies as soon as they appear in editions. To see the latest solutions we build in real time, make sure you are connected to the internet, and firmly drag down from the top of the ‘Home’ screen to refresh your editions.

7. How can I access an ad-free reading experience?

The PDF view shows our newspapers and magazines in their original print format, including advertisements.

However, if you prefer a different way to read editions, which doesn’t include print advertising, tapping on any article in the PDF will open individual articles in text view. Swipe left from this text view to read every article in the edition, uninterrupted by ads, without needing to return to the PDF view.

Alternatively, open the PDF and tap the “A≡” icon at the button of the screen to scroll through all ad-free ‘text view’ articles in the edition without needing to read the PDF at all.

8. The ‘Home’ and ‘Puzzles’ tabs are greyed out and I can’t click on them to read today’s edition

You will need to be connected to the internet to download an edition, and to see the latest available editions or the full library of previous editions. If you want to read offline, you will need to download your chosen edition or article while connected to the internet; they will then be accessible in the ‘My library’ tab. Unfortunately, crosswords cannot be played offline.

9. How do I share articles?

It is not possible to share all articles within the new app currently.

However, we have heard from readers that this is an important feature. We will be exploring ways to enhance article sharing in the updated app as a priority for future releases.
