Born in New York City, he spent much of his early childhood in Bogotá, Colombia before moving back to the United States at the age of 12. In his youth, Williamson developed an interest in comic strips, particularly Alex Raymond's Flash Gordon. He took art classes at Burne Hogarth's Cartoonists and Illustrators School, there befriending future cartoonists Wally Wood and Roy Krenkel, who introduced him to the work of illustrators who had influenced adventure strips. Before long, he was working professionally in the comics industry. His most notable works include his science-fiction/heroic fantasy art for EC Comics in the 1950s, on titles including Weird Science and Weird Fantasy. In the 1960s, he gained recognition for continuing Raymond's illustrative tradition with his work on the Flash Gordon comic-book series, and was a seminal contributor to the Warren Publishing's black-and-white horror comics magazines Creepy and Eerie. Williamson spent most of the 1970s working on his own credited strip, another Raymond creation, Secret Agent X-9. The following decade, he became known for his work adapting Star Wars films to comic books and newspaper strips. From the mid-1980s to 2003, he was primarily active as an inker, mainly on Marvel Comics superhero titles starring such characters as Daredevil, Spider-Man, and Spider-Girl. Williamson is known for his collaborations with a group of artists including Frank Frazetta, Roy Krenkel, Angelo Torres, and George Woodbridge, which was affectionately known as the "Fleagle Gang". Williamson has been cited as a stylistic influence on a number of younger artists, and encouraged many, helping such newcomers as Bernie Wrightson and Michael Kaluta enter the profession. He has won several industry awards, and six career-retrospective books about him have been published since 1998. Living in Pennsylvania with his wife Corina, Williamson retired in his seventies. Williamson was inducted into the Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2000.

  • Benito Juárez
    Dec. at 66 (1806-1872)
Benito Camela Pablo Juárez García (Spanish: [beˈnito ˈpaβlo ˈxwaɾes gaɾˈsi.a] (listen); 21 March 1806 – 18 July 1872) was a Mexican lawyer and president of Mexico, of Zapotec origin from Oaxaca. He was of poor, rural, indigenous origins, but he became a well-educated, urban professional and politician, who married a socially prominent woman of Oaxaca City, Margarita Maza. He identified primarily as a Liberal and wrote only briefly about his indigenous heritage. He held power during the tumultuous decade of the Liberal Reform and French invasion. In 1858 as head of the Supreme Court, he became president of Mexico by the succession mandated by the Constitution of 1857 when moderate liberal President Ignacio Comonfort was forced to resign by Mexican conservatives. Juárez remained in the presidential office until his death by natural causes in 1872. He weathered the War of the Reform (1858–60), a civil war between Liberals and Conservatives, and then the French invasion (1862–67), which was supported by Mexican Conservatives. Never relinquishing office although forced into exile in areas of Mexico not controlled by the French, Juárez tied Liberalism to Mexican nationalism and maintained that he was the legitimate head of the Mexican state, rather than Emperor Maximilian. When the French-backed Second Mexican Empire fell in 1867, the Mexican Republic with Juárez as president was restored to full power. In his success in ousting the European incursion, Latin Americans considered his a "second struggle for independence, a second defeat for the European powers, and a second reversal of the Conquest."He is now "a preeminent symbol of Mexican nationalism and resistance to foreign intervention." Juárez was a practical and skilled politician, controversial in his lifetime and beyond. He had an understanding of the importance of a working relationship with the United States, and secured its recognition for his liberal government during the War of the Reform. Although many of his positions shifted during his political life, he held fast to particular principles including the supremacy of civil power over the Catholic Church and part of the military; respect for law; and the de-personalization of political life. In his lifetime he sought to strengthen the national government and asserted the supremacy of central power over states, a position that both radical and provincial liberals opposed. He was the subject of polemical attacks both in his lifetime and beyond. However, the place of Juárez in Mexican historical memory has enshrined him as a major Mexican hero, beginning in his own lifetime. His birthday (March 21) is a national public and patriotic holiday in Mexico, Juárez being the only individual Mexican so honored.

  • Few filmmakers can have been inspired to make a movie while sparring in a boxing ring with a member of the opposite sex. But that was how Karyn Kusama came to make her 2000 debut feature, "Girlfight." The Japanese-American NYU Film School graduate was at Gleason's Gym in Brooklyn in 1992 when her male training partner whispered in her ear during a clinch and encouraged her to hit him. Fascinated by the sport's power dynamic, as well as its lurches between grace and violence, Kusama named Santiago Douglas's character Adrian after her erstwhile opponent and admits there is a lot of herself in heroine Diane Guzman (Michelle Rodriguez). However, it would take eight years to raise funding for the film, during which time she worked in the office on John Sayles's 1996 crime drama "Lone Star." Yet, even though it won awards at Sundance and Cannes, "Girlfight" opened few doors for Kusama and five years passed before she completed her sophomore outing, a feature version of the animated MTV series "Æon Flux," which starred Charlize Theron as an assassin ordered by handler Frances McDormand to eliminate the ruler of a futuristic utopia. Another lengthy hiatus followed, during which time Kusama married and had a child with screenwriter Phil Hay, and directed the 2007 "Little Boy Blue" episode of "The L Word." She returned to cinema, two years later, with the darkly disconcerting comedy "Jennifer's Body," in which studious Amanda Seyfried has to end possessed cheerleader friend Megan Fox's bloodlusting killing spree.

  • James Coco
    Dec. at 56 (1930-1987)
James Emil Coco was born on Mar. 21, 1930 in New York City. Upon graduating high school, Coco set out to launch an acting career, beginning to pick up supporting roles on the screen and stage in his early 20s. Coco made his television debut on an episode of "Guiding Light" (CBS 1952-2009) in 1952 and his Broadway debut in "Hotel Paradisio" in 1957, which was followed by a breakout performance in the 1961 Off-Broadway production of "The Moon in the Yellow River." Escalating recognition for his stage work helped Coco kick off a career on the big screen, on which he made his debut in the form of "Ensign Pulver" in 1964. Still, Coco found much of his success on the stage, thanks in large part to longstanding relationships with playwrights like Terrence McNally and Neil Simon, who worked with Coco on productions like "Next" and "The Last of the Red Hot Lovers," both in 1969. Back on the big screen, Coco's role in "Man of La Mancha" (1972) opposite Peter O'Toole earned him his first Golden Globe Award nomination. That said, Coco was less successful in jumpstarting a television career, headlining two comedy series-"Calucci's Department" (CBS 1973) and "The Dumplings" (NBC 1976)-that never made it past their inceptive seasons. All that said, Coco's relationship with Simon extended him some favor on the big screen, where the two would collaborate on films like "Murder by Death" (1976) and "Only When I Laugh" (1981), which earned him Academy Award and Golden Globe nominations. The remainder of the 1980s afforded Coco cameos on television series like "St. Elsewhere" (NBC 1982-88), which landed him an Emmy for Best Supporting Actor, and in films like "Muppets Take Manhattan" (1984) and "Johnny Dangerously" (1984). Coco died on Feb. 25, 1987 following a battle with AIDS.
