Pop and R&B hitmaker Jason Derulo was born in Miami and grew up studying opera, theater and ballet, writing his first song at age eight. One pivotal moment came at age 12 when he was cut from his junior-high basketball team and enlisted Frank Harris, a local law student, as a coach; Harris instead recognized Derulo's musical talent and became his manager. By 2006 a 17-year-old Derulo was signed as a songwriter to the New Orleans-based rap label Cash Money; one of his first recorded songs was "Playing With Fire" on Lil Wayne's Tha Carter III. That year he won the grand prize singing and dancing on TV's "Showtime at the Apollo" (syndicated 1987-2008), which led to his discovery by artist/producer J.R. Rotem. Already hot with hit tracks by Rihanna, Lil Kim, Britney Spears and others, Rotem now began collaborating with Derullo. His debut single "Whatcha Say" was released in May 2009. Equal parts pop and R&B, it sampled Imogen Heap's "Hide & Seek" and featured heavy use of Auto-Tune. Derulo based the lyric on the his brother trying to win back a woman who'd left him. Not only did the song hit Number One on Billboard's pop and R&B charts, his brother got the woman back and married her. Derulo's self-titled debut album initially took off in the U.K. where it produced three hit singles, but entered the U.S. Top Ten after Derulo did a spell of touring, including an opening slot on Lady Gaga's Monster Ball tour. While rehearsing for a followup tour in 2012 Derulo broke one of his vertebrae; as a result most dates behind his second album Future History were canceled. The album still produced two Top 20 hits in "Don't Wanna Go Home" and "It Girl," and Derulo made a high-profile return to live work later that year. His third album was released as Tattoos abroad and in reworked form as Talk Dirty in the U.S. Both versions were highlighted by a number of hit collaborations including "Fire" with Pitbull, "Wiggle" with Snoop Dogg and "Vertigo" with Jordin Sparks, who was then Derulo's girlfriend. He would later guest on a Pitbull single, "Drive You Crazy." Success continued with the release of Everything is 4 and its advance single, "Want to Want Me," his sixth Top Ten. The album continued his string of collaborations, this time with Stevie Wonder, Meghan Trainor, Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban. 2017 brought anopther paid of hit singles, "Swalla" and "Tip Toe." Despite the sexual theme of both tunes, he announced in 2018 that the forthcoming album 777 would display a "very emotional side" of him that wasn't heard before.

Janelle Monáe was never a typical R&B singer. She based her music around a science fiction concept of a dystopian world called "Metropolis," and developed the alter ego of an android, Cindi Mayweather, living in the year 2719. For all the visionary trappings of her music, Monáe was also a straightforward pop singer who fully engaged with the 21st-century pop mainstream, starring in makeup commercials for a major international brand and finding success in the animated cartoon feature "Rio 2" (2014) and period drama "Hidden Figures" (2016). Janelle Monáe Robinson was born on December 1, 1985 in Kansas City, Kansas. As a child, Monáe often lived in her own imaginary world, which would later inspire her music. Monáe moved to New York to study drama at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy, and also went to a performing arts school called Freedom Theatre in Philadelphia. Monáe moved to Atlanta in 2001, where she met her early mentor, rapper and producer Big Boi from OutKast. Founding her own arts collective and record label, Wondaland Arts Society, Monáe self-released her first EP, The Audition. Although The Audition didn't get much exposure, it did bring Monáe to the attention of Sean "Puffy" Combs, who signed her to his Bad Boy label in 2006. There, Monáe began plotting out an ambitious series of concept recordings collectively known as "Metropolis," the story of a runaway android named Cindi Mayweather in the year 2719. First came the EP Metropolis: Suite 1 (The Chase), a critically-acclaimed released that earned Monáe an opening slot for No Doubt in 2009. Monáe kept forging ahead with the Metropolis concept, releasing her full-length debut The ArchAndroid in 2010. Featuring the hit singles "Tightrope" and "Cold War," the acclaimed album was nominated for Best Contemporary R&B Album at the 53rd Grammy Awards. Monáe also won the ASCAP Vanguard Award at the Billboard Music Awards in 2010. In keeping the multimedia reality of modern pop stardom, Monáe then became a spokeswoman for an extensive TV and print ad campaign for CoverGirl, and also appeared in commercials for Sonos Wireless HiFi. Monáe became a bona fide pop star when her guest performance on the song "We Are Young" by the New York alt-rock act Fun. became a number-one hit in 2012. Monáe's second solo album, The Electric Lady, came out in September 2013, continuing the Metropolis storyline and featuring the hit single "Q.U.E.E.N.," with a guest spot by Queen Latifah. She then performed at a "Women of Soul" concert at the White House along with legends Patti LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, and more. In addition to her successful music career, Monáe provided the voice of Dr. Monáe in the animated hit "Rio 2" (2014), and also wrote and performed a song for the soundtrack, "What Is Love." Monae's acting career took a major stride forward with her starring role alongside Octavia Spencer in the '60s-set NASA-based drama "Hidden Figures" (2016). Following a five-year break from music, which she attributed partly to the death of her idol and latter-day mentor Prince, Monáe returned with the album Dirty Computer in April 2018. While doing press for the album, Monáe addressed her sexuality for the first time, declaring herself "pansexual" in an interview with Rolling Stone.

Haim is an American pop rock band from Los Angeles, California. The band consists of sisters Este, Danielle and Alana Haim, and drummer Dash Hutton. The group's pop sound on their studio work stands in contrast to the more rock-based music of their live shows. The sisters grew up in a musical family, and began playing instruments from an early age in cover bands with their parents. They began performing as Haim in 2007, but did not seriously consider a professional career for some years. Este graduated with a degree in Ethnomusicology, while Danielle became a successful touring guitarist with Jenny Lewis and The Strokes' frontman, Julian Casablancas, on his solo tours. This led to Haim resuming as a full-time operation in 2012. The group's first release, Forever, combined with positive reception at the South by Southwest festival, led to a deal with Polydor Records and a management deal with Jay-Z's Roc Nation group in mid-2012. The band began recording material for their first album, Days Are Gone, in between touring, including appearances at the Glastonbury Festival.

Raised in Foxborough, Massachusetts, JoJo demonstrated an early passion for music and performance, which led to her signing with Blackground Records at the tender age of twelve. She quickly gained recognition with her debut single "Leave (Get Out)" in 2004, which not only topped the Billboard Pop Songs chart but also earned her the distinction of being the youngest solo artist to have a number-one single in the United States. JoJo's career trajectory was not without its challenges. Following the success of her first two albums, JoJo in 2004 and The High Road in 2006, she found herself embroiled in a protracted legal battle with her record label that prevented her from releasing new music for nearly a decade. Despite this setback, she used this period to hone her songwriting skills and explore her artistic identity. In 2014, she won her freedom from the record label and immediately signed with Atlantic Records, marking a new chapter in her career. In the subsequent years, JoJo went on to release multiple successful albums including Mad Love in 2016 and Good to Know in 2020, both of which received critical acclaim for their mature themes and JoJo's vocal performances. Apart from her singing career, JoJo has also showcased her acting chops in several TV shows and films such as Aquamarine and RV. Yunalis binti Mat Zara'ai (born 14 November 1986), known professionally as Yuna, is a Malaysian singer-songwriter. Yuna's initial exposure came through the viral success of her music uploaded to Myspace, which received over one million plays. This online success alerted the Indie-Pop label/management company to her music, and in early 2011 she signed with the Fader Label. She is best known for the collaboration with Usher on her breakout single, "Crush", which peaked at number 3 on the US Billboard Adult R&B chart. Born and raised in Kedah and Selangor, she began writing songs at age 14. She soon taught herself to play guitar, and by 2006, in need of a creative outlet while attending law school, performed for an audience for the first time. Joined by guitarist Pa'an, bassist Efry Arwis, and drummer Adib Azfar (and later, Adil Ali), Yuna made her recorded debut album in Malaysia in 2008 with a self-titled EP, earned five Malaysian Music Awards nominations (the Malaysian equivalent of the Grammy). She took home four trophies, including Best New Artist and Best Song (for the breakout hit "Dan Sebenarnya"). The Decorate (EP) followed two years later. Decorate included the viral hit "Rocket," which won raves from Billboard magazine, indie rock radio station KEXP, and hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons, as well as a feature in Spin's "Eight Bands You Need to Hear Now". For her performances, Yuna was nominated as one of MTV's Iggy's Best New Bands in the World in 2011, and she marked the occasion by playing at the historic MTV Studios. The 2012 single "Live Your Life", produced by Pharrell Williams, was a preamble to her self-titled full-length debut, which arrived that April. That summer, Yuna appeared at Lollapalooza. In 2013, Yuna returned with the album Nocturnal, featuring the single "Falling". In February 2016, Yuna previewed her third album with the release of "Places to Go", a single produced by hip-hop artist DJ Premier. The full album, Chapters, was released three months later. Yuna performed as a special guest at the 2016 Soul Train Music Awards.
