Iranun is member of the Danao group of Greater Central Philppine languages. It is spoken by about 250,000 people, mainly in the southwest of Mindanao island in the south of the Philippines, and also on the west coast of the state of Sabah in eastern of Malaysia. In the Philippines it is spoken particularly in the provinces of Maguindanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Lanao del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Bukidnon and Cotabato. In Sabah it is spoken by about 15,000 people in the districts of Kota Belud, Lahad Datu, and Kota Kinabalu.
Some sources classify the Iranun spoken in the Philippines (Illanon) and that spoken in Malaysia (Iranun) as closely-related but distinct languages. Others classify them as varieties of one language.
Iranun is also known as Iranon, Illanon or Illanun. A way to write the language with the Latin alphabet has been developed recently by SIL International working with Iranun people. There is also a way to write it with the Arabic script. There are plans to use the language in pre-schools.
