What do the woods of Acadia, the torch of the Statue of Liberty, the shores of Cape Cod, and the Italianate home of Franklin D. Roosevelt have in common? All of these diverse treasures — wild and urban, vast and small — can be found within the national parks of the Northeast. From the Delaware Water Gap in New Jersey to the newly designated site in Maine, NPCA’s Northeast Regional Office works to protect park units of astonishing cultural, historical, and natural diversity.
The Northeast Regional Office, based in New York City, works on a suite of issues. Their priorities include promoting and protecting the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area, home of the Delaware River, water source for more than 15 million people; raising awareness of the grave maintenance needs of our parks, including those priceless places that tell America’s pre- and post-Revolution story; and engaging urban populations with the parks in their backyards, such as Gateway National Recreation Area.

See more ›The Northeast office successfully secured community participation in the creation of Gateways’ general management plan, a visionary document that takes great strides toward balancing public recreation with protecting and restoring the park’s resources. This team also rallied support for the establishment of a national park at Stonewall in NY, the first site dedicated to telling the story of America’s LGBT movement.
The staff of the Northeast will continue to straddle both the urban and natural worlds as they focus on securing better transportation to the Jamaica Bay unit of Gateway, empowering more audiences to speak up for national parks, and collaborating with parks on needed climate change adaptations. It’s an important time for park protection, and we hope you’ll join the staff of the Northeast with their critical work.
Who Knew? Gateway's Hidden Gem
Covering an area nearly equal that of nearby Manhattan, Jamaica Bay is one of three units of the Gateway National Recreation Area. Visitors can bike the park's many trails, paddle the protected waters of the bay or hike within the wildlife refuge.
