Noodle Recall as Warning Issued to Four States

Over 37,000 cases of a frozen noodle product produced by the manufacturer Sun Noodle have been recalled after the company found traces of undeclared egg white powder in some some of its items.

According to a release from the company, the product, S&S Cup Saimin—Noodles with Soup & Garnishes, is a frozen noodle item that is sold in "ready-to-heat cups" along with a separate fish cake. The contaminated products were manufactured between May 9, 2023, and May 8, 2024, and distributed in cities across four states: Hawaii, California, Nevada and Utah.

"People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to egg, run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products," Sun Noodle said in its release.

The company said that it discovered traces of egg white powder in the Saimin cup's fish cake item while conducting "routine quality checks." The egg product was not disclosed on the Saimin cup's packaging. Those who have purchased a recalled product are encouraged to return their items for a full refund.

Recalled items can be identified by their lot code, which is located on the lid of the Saimin cup. The lot codes of the affected products include any increments between 1623129 to 1623365 and 1624001 to 1624129. In total, Sun Noodle said that 37,158 cases of the Saimin cups have been affected.

No illnesses related to the contaminated product have been reported, said Sun Noodle.

"We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience or concern this may cause and assure our customers that we are taking all necessary steps to ensure the safety and quality of our products," the company added.

A spokesperson for Sun Noodle told Newsweek via email that the "egg white powder ingredient is limited to the Fish Cake within this (frozen) soup and noodle cup and this product has very limited distribution." There are no other products impacted by the recall.

Newsweek reached out to the manufacturer via email for additional information. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration published a copy of Sun Noodle's recall notice to its website as a "public service."

Dozens of food-related recalls have been issued in 2024. Last, 234 food products were recalled, according to data from the FDA.

According to a report by the insurance group Sedgwick, the number of recalls in the U.S. reached its highest single-quarter total in over five years at the beginning of 2024. The report takes into account recalls for the automotive, consumer product, food and drink, medical device, and pharmaceutical industries. In the first three months of the year, 909 recalls were reported across all five categories.
