Model Says Millennial Fashion 'Staple' Is Out, Divides Opinion

Once again, millennials have been left questioning their wardrobe choices after a Gen-Z model has started a viral debate as to whether a staple fashion item is on its way out.

Sarah Coomer, 19, caused a frenzy on TikTok after sharing a video asking: 'Crop tops are out of style?" This led to thousands of comments as the video's 1.3 million-plus viewers fought for and against cropped clothing.

Coomer began the video by sharing her thoughts on the staple item. She said: "The reign of the crop tops lasted for so long. They have been a staple throughout the years, but I feel like this whole classy sort of sophisticated kind of old-money look is really taking over, and crop tops don't really fit into that category"

While Y2K fashion brought the style into the mainstream, where it has remained ever since, the style originated in the 1940s as a favorite for performers like belly dancers in search of items to show off their movements (and midriffs). Much like how hemlines rise during times of economic crisis, the top style is also believed to have been born as a result of fabric rations following World War II.

Since, the style has become a consistent element of young women's wardrobes across the U.S., and the world, with Coomer herself no stranger to a crop top. She said: "Since I turned 14 years old, I've been wearing a crop top every single day of my life, even in the dead of winter.

"I have crop sweaters, cropped jackets, my workout clothes are cropped; everything is cropped!" Coomer added.

After noticing that bodysuits and longline T-shirts were taking over, Coomer said in the video, shared to her account @sarahcoome, that these styles are "so much more in fashion right now, which means that I literally have to start over."

Ahead of investing in replacements for her current crop-top rotation, Coomer took the opportunity to check in with TikTok's fashion community as she said: "I'm willing to start over, but I just need to know what's in; what are we replacing the crop tops with? Are we focusing more on accessories? Are we wearing more dresses?"

The comments section was soon overtaken by fashion lovers debating whether or not the crop-top obsession is finally coming to an end.

"I don't like old money style." wrote one user, defending the style. "I love crop tops they make me feel so confident and hot."

"As a short torso girl I will not stop wearing crop tops lol [laugh out loud]," added another.

A third user, in support of the movement away from crop tops, wrote: "I'm so over everything being a crop top! Sometimes I just want a normal T-shirt."

"Welcome to the millennial crisis!" one user wrote, adding that, "Gen-z's crop tops are our skinny jeans."
