Joe Biden Faces Inglorious End

The pressure is continuing to pile on President Joe Biden, with speculation that he is willing to accept his 2024 campaign could be over.

Biden has frequently dismissed suggestions that he should not seek reelection in the wake of his languished and stumbling CNN debate performance, and that he is still the best Democratic candidate to beat Donald Trump in November.

However, in recent days Biden has lost the support of more and more Democratic figures, with Montana Senator Jon Tester and California rep. Adam Schiff the latest names to publicly call on the president to step aside from his candidacy.

Biden's tail-spinning campaign, which is essentially on hold as he isolates in Delaware after contracting COVID-19, has also seen several top Democrats tell Axios that the president could end his campaign as soon as this weekend. The Biden For President campaign called for an all-staff meeting to take place on Friday, reported The Associated Press.

If the reports of a looming end to the campaign, which have not been confirmed by Newsweek, are accurate, then Biden is facing the concerning prospect of being a one-term president, who originally sought reelection, pulling out of his race before officially being declared the party's presidential candidate.

Only five sitting presidents have been denied their party's nominations for a second term in U.S. history. The last was Chester A. Arthur, in 1884, when he failed to get the Republican Party's nomination

According to The Washington Post, former President Barack Obama has been telling his allies that Biden should consider stepping down.

The Post also reported that former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, one of the Democrats' most influential House members despite no longer being in a leadership position, also believes Biden can be persuaded to pull out of the race against Trump over fears he cannot win in November.

Reacting to the reports, a spokesperson for Pelosi told Newsweek: "Speaker Pelosi respects the confidentiality of her meetings and conversations with the President of the United States.

"Sadly, the feeding frenzy from the press based on anonymous sources misrepresents any conversations the Speaker may have had with the President."

There have also been suggestions that Biden is starting to acknowledge calls for him to stand down, and is reconsidering his position.

Biden has reportedly started asking if Vice President Kamala Harris, considered the favorite to replace him if were to withdraw, could beat Trump in November, reported The New York Times.

Biden's team has been contacted for comment via email.

Even before Biden's worrying June 27 debate performance, the 81-year-old president had long faced concerns that he is too old to seek another term in office.

Biden has also had record breaking-low approval ratings at times since he entered office in January 2021.

He has consistently said November's election is vital to stop an authoritarian Trump returning to White House, as well as the introduction of The Heritage Foundation's Project 2025 initiative.

With around three and half months to go until voters take to the polls, some Democrats are hoping that the man who led them to a triumphant victory in 2020 can help them win again in a different way.

"While I appreciate his commitment to public service and our country, I believe President Biden should not seek reelection to another term," sen. Tester said in a statement.
