Ohio Senator JD Vance, the bestselling author of Hillbilly Elegy and a rising star in the Republican Party, has joined former President Donald Trump on the Republican presidential ticket as his vice president on Monday.
Vance, who grew up in Ohio, is likely to serve as an emissary to the Rust Belt and, at 39-years-old, brings youth into a campaign focused on the advancing age of the presidential candidates. As Vance steps into this high-profile role, his family will become a more prominent part of the 2024 presidential campaign.
In a Truth Social post, Trump wrote that Vance has "championed the hardworking men and women of our country." He added that Vance will be focused on the people he "fought so brilliantly for," and specified that includes voters in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio and Minnesota.
About an hour after the announcement, JD and Usha appeared on the convention floor. Hand in hand with her husband, Usha smiled and greeted people as they made their way through throngs of people toward the stage.
Who Is His Wife, Usha Vance?
Usha Vance, born Usha Chilukuri, is an attorney who has carved out a successful career in the legal field. She clerked for Supreme Court Justice John Roberts and Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh before he was nominated to the Supreme Court.
Born to Indian immigrant parents, she grew up with a strong emphasis on education and hard work in a San Diego, California, suburb. Usha attended Yale University and also graduated from Yale Law School. While at Yale, Usha served as managing editor of the Yale Journal of Law & Technology and executive development editor of The Yale Law Journal, according to a biography from Munger, Tolles & Olson law firm. Her attorney profile was removed from the company website as of Monday evening.
She also serves on the board of the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, according to her LinkedIn.
She met JD at Yale Law School while they were both students. She told NBC News in 2017 that she was attracted to JD because of his positive attitude and that he "felt very different." They got married in 2014. They also had a separate ceremony, during which they were blessed by a Hindu pandit.
"He's an incredible father, and he's my best friend," Usha said in a campaign ad in 2022.
Usha previously told Fox News that her parents are Hindu and she was raised in a religious home. Having seen the "power" of religion in her own life, she encouraged JD to re-discover his own Christian faith.
While JD is a known republican, Usha was a registered Democrat as of 2014, according to voter registration records reviewed by Newsweek. However, in 2018, she registered as a Republican.
In a recent Fox News Fox & Friends interview, Usha said that she wasn't "raring to change" anything about their lives with regard to him becoming vice president. But, she added that she believes in her husband, loves him and they'll "just sort of see what happens with our life."
During an interview with Fox News on Monday night, Vance called it an "incredible honor" to be selected as Trump's vice president. But, he added that his family helps keep him grounded because he's "still a husband and a dad first."
Who Are JD Vance's Kids?
JD and Usha Vance are proud parents to three young children, whose lives are now going to be even more in the national spotlight due to their father's political career. The Vance children are Ewan Blaine, born in 2017, another son, whose name is not widely known and was born in 2019, and Mirabel Rose, who was born in December 2021.
As JD takes on the role of vice presidential candidate, his family is likely to be thrust more into the spotlight. Usha is no stranger to a campaign, having been on the trail with her husband for his 2016 and 2022 U.S. Senate runs. It's likely that she'll continue to be a presence with JD as the election grows nearer.
