Gen Zer Shares 'Hot Take' From Her Dad That Made Her Rethink Dating

A TikToker's father has said last-minute planning may be the key to good romance.

In a video posted on June 18, user @rachelinarealway told viewers how her father's advice led her to shift her mindset on same-day dates, after he suggested that such dates may signal more intentionality than dates planned weeks in advance.

"Dad's dating advice is the only advice I take," the poster wrote in the caption of the video, which has received more than 144,000 views and 15,000 likes. Newsweek has contacted @rachelinarealway for comment via TikTok.

In the video, the poster said she was on the phone with her dad when someone asked her out for a date—later that day.

"I normally would say no to anyone who asks me on a date for the same night because I think it shows kind of a lack of effort," she said.

According to the poster, her dad replied: "I completely disagree. You're going out with someone who intentionally knows that same day that they're in a good mood; they have a lot of energy; they want to have a conversation with you.

"They want to be present, and they want to be there, versus someone who asks you out weeks in advance. They have no idea what they're actually going to look like and feel like that day."

The TikToker said her father made the point that a person asking for a same-day date knows they're bringing "the best version of themselves to the table." He also reminded her that she had no other plans that night.

In the video's comments section, the poster wrote, "My dad has all the advice." She said she called him often to get his insights on situations in her life.

What Do the Comments Say?

Viewers had plenty of opinions on same-day dates. Some said there's romance and intention in spontaneity, explaining why a person might ask for a same-day date. As the poster's dad said, it may not have anything to do with a lack of initiative.

"He's right," one user wrote. "I would have to really trust my gut on someone to ask them out for the same day. I would perceive it as an honor."

"People also have tough work schedules. Not everyone works Monday through Friday, same day may just have been [the] only free day for a week or two," another added.

"Another dad here," a user commented. "They could also be so stoked to see you they want it as soon as possible. That's how I always felt about it."

Some commenters spoke from experience, describing successful same-day dates.

One wrote, "I went on a same day date tonight where he invited me to join his bar trivia team, I had a blast and made five new friends."
