Bread Recall Update as FDA Issues Risk Level

Several different types of bread products that were recalled because of their undeclared ingredients have been given a risk classification.

Breadbox Co.'s Breadman Brioche Toast, Buns, Sliders and Hot Dogs were pulled from shelves on May 16, along with Raisin Bread and Jalapeno Cheese Bagels.

On Tuesday, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) categorized the recall under Class II, which refers to "a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote."

Several of the items were flagged for a possible undeclared milk allergen, which could be dangerous to someone with a dairy intolerance or allergy. Other items may also have undeclared Yellow No. 5, often known as tartrazine, a synthetic lemon-yellow food dye.

Multiple studies have linked Yellow No. 5 and other artificial food colorants to hyperactivity and so it could be something people with conditions such as ADHD are trying to avoid.

Its EU warning label reads: "May have an adverse effect on activity and attention in children."

The following products have been recalled because of undeclared Yellow No. 5: Brioche Toast, 2 lb. (1 loaf/bag), Brioche Buns, 40oz (10 buns/bag), Brioche Sliders, 50oz (25 sliders/bag), Brioche Hot Dog, 40oz (10 buns/bag).

In total, this amounts to 43 loaves of toast, 898 buns, 821 sliders and 364 hot dogs, all with an expiration date of May 22.

Meanwhile, Breadman Raisin Bread, plastic bag, 16oz, has been pulled for both an undeclared milk allergen and undeclared Yellow No. 5. There are 147 of these, with the expiration date of May 21.

But Breadman Jalapeno Cheese Bagels, plastic bag, 16oz, has been recalled because of an undeclared milk allergen only. Some 130 of these are affected, with the expiration date of May 21.

Breadman, based in Santa Fe Springs, California, said there have been "no foreign or government consignees."

It continued: "The Raisin Bread and Jalapeno Cheese Bagels were distributed to one consignee in California who distributes to their retail chain stores located throughout Southern California. The Brioche products were distributed to a total of 24 restaurants within Southern California."

Newsweek has contacted Breadbox Co., also known as Melrose Baking Co, for comment via email.

For comparison to this recall's Class II assignment, Class I is used in a "situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death."

Class III is "a situation in which use of or exposure to a violative product is not likely to cause adverse health consequences."
