na·tal
/ˈnādl/
adjective · relating to the place or time of one's birth
An award-winning audio docuseries, NATAL passes the microphone to Black women, gender expansive people and families to share their stories around reproductive care in their own words.
We expand public conversations around Black care traditions and invite audiences to reimagine care for themselves and their communities.
We collaborate with birthworkers, providers, artists, advocates and cultural institutions to develop original media and programming that speak to Black womanhood, gender expansive experiences and family life through the many lenses of memory, traditions, reproduction, autonomy, power, and place. Our work inspires audiences to celebrate their bodies, reclaim their reproductive stories, and create new care traditions.
In May 2024, NATAL co-presented the Simone Leigh Opening Celebration at LACMA. The docuseries is a past grantee of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation and USC Annenberg Center for Health Journalism.
Season Three of NATAL is co-published and supported by the journalism nonprofit The Economic Hardship Reporting Project.
