The changing seasons, particularly in spring and summer, bring more than new flowers.
It is a time of year when newly graduated students, and even seasoned professionals, seek and find new jobs and career opportunities.
Since I teach at a university, I see a lot of posts on here from former students of mine regarding getting new jobs. It occurred to me that when I am in the classroom with them, I probably don’t do enough to provide them with job and career tips, including tips on the soft skills employees need to thrive in their careers.
Here is one to get started with: Be courteous
None of us are perfect, and sometimes this can be one of the hardest pieces of advice to follow, but don’t leave the Golden Rule stuck back in Sunday school. If you are treating others as you would want them to treat you, you will open many more literal and figurative doors than if you were to be rude or standoffish to people. I highly doubt there will be people who will be able to comment on this post and tell you that the key to getting ahead in life is to be mean and nasty to everyone.
So whether you are fresh out of college, transitioning to civilian life from the military, or a seasoned professional starting a new job, comment below to share some of your own tips and advice!
