Here's the first in what will be a series of blogs from Crystal Thompkins,CAP®,CSPG (she/her) about her career transition journey and whatever else strikes her fancy!

We're proud of the work we're doing here - BUT, there's a lot more to be done. Benchmarking and connecting is paramount - it's the purpose of these awards. -Milspouses are still underutilized, underemployed and often challenged to find a reasonable career option. -Guard/Reserve are still underutilized, un-connected in some cases, and better benefits/practices are often hard to push. -Skillbridge and similar programs are often being improperly employed, causing multiple transitions for service members. - Finally, many organizations don't realize the massive bottom line impacts of having a successful, well-oiled program. It's more than "nice to have". It's great for business and people. Congratulations to all of the companies who've been recognized by the VETS Indexes awards that were recently released. Cushman & Wakefield has ranked 5 Star for the 2nd consecutive year. We're only able to do this with the hard work of so many alongside us. But there's more to be done. Year 6 About six years ago, Arun Shukla, Andrew Klemm, CPA, and I met, along with our significant others (Elise and I weren’t married yet) to discuss setting up our own firm- and how we wanted to do it differently. We asked our better halves for three things: 1) understanding that we may not be successful and have a gap in income, 2) it would be a fair amount of work, please help us! and 3) help us come up with a name. Fortunately, 1 has been held off for six years; 2 is a labor of love each day and week; and 3, we appreciated their input but then went with something less creative! Six years in, I get recharged every time we connect with our team. The past week, we hosted our semi-annual offsite. We try to rotate locations to where team members may be or key projects and clients are. This time was no exception. The offsite is where we go to sharpen our skills, learn from each other, and deepen our SLKone, LLC team bonds. We were fortunate to have two clients come visit us to speak and share their experiences and what they look for in advisors. Further, we were fortunate to have Dr. Sridhar Balasubramanian from UNC come and facilitate a number of learning sessions and workshops for us all. We cannot do this for our team and ourselves without our awesome clients, of course. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the time our team members commit to not just attending, but also helping develop content to share with the team. And finally, I have to give great thanks to our Business Manager, Isabella Siniscalchi Doval, who I consider my right hand in helping keep us running smoothly. An early gift to those that are graduating in May, new grads, and young professionals. Last week, my colleague and friend Isaias Villafranco asked me for my very best professional advice. It happens to be my very best piece of advice personally too. You want to make more money? Up to you! You want to get promoted? Up to you! You want a bigger house, a nicer car, go on a great trip? Up to you! If you want a happier marriage, or a better relationship with your kids? Up to you! Here is an example: You want to make more money at work, or get promoted? Say the following to your boss: "I would like to be put on the path to make more money or get promoted. To do this, I know I need to add more value to the department, team and company. Can we please have a collaborative conversation of what I need to do differently, or what additional skills I need to learn to accomplish this." At one time, I lead a team of 300 employees. I had PLENTY of folks tell me that they needed to make more money. I had NO folks ask me what they needed to do differently to accomplish this. If someone asked me what THEY needed to do to be put on the path to making more or getting promoted, I would have called 9-1-1 to tell the paramedics to "warm up the paddles."
