In the past year, we've witnessed incredible progress in AI-assisted cancer diagnosis. One area where there is huge potential is in skin cancer, where AI tools are proving their value in improving early detection. Skin cancer, especially melanoma, is on the rise, yet many people delay getting checked with potentially significant impact on the prognosis. In fact, research shows only 9% of people would immediately get a mole they were concerned about examined by a professional. However, when given the option of using an AI-powered app to examine the mole, that number jumps to 33%. At Bupa, we see lots of opportunities to use AI and are exploring its use to enhance patient care, improve operational efficiency, and help our customers to live longer, healthier and happier lives. For our customers in Spain, we offer an at-home dermatology assessment service through our digital health service, Blua. Customers who are worried about a skin lesion can take photos of it using their smartphone. Once taken, the photos are uploaded to Blua, and using AI, are compared with a database of millions of other images of skin lesions to check for signs of malignancy. If the tool suspects that there is a cause for concern it will let the customer know to book a follow up appointment with a doctor so that it can be looked at further and preventative action can be taken if needed, appointments are even eased by the booking service in Blua. Innovations like these that promote early detection and convenient access to care are key to building a future of healthcare that fits seamlessly with people’s lives. 18% or fewer of stage I / II melanomas actually progress to metastatic disease. Yet the majority of deaths from #melanoma occur in this group. All patients are treated as having the same risk for progression because it is only possible to identify whose melanoma will progress by using additional biomarkers not yet available in the UK. Following removal of the melanoma and surrounding skin, the UK follow-up schedule for all patient usually comprises: - Stage 1A: 2-4 times for the first year then every 6 months for 2 years. - Stages 1B to 2B: every 3 months for the first 3 years, then every 6 months for the next 2 years. There is an urgent need for better risk stratification of melanomas to identify and spare the 90% of patients presenting with early-stage, low-risk melanomas from the burden of standard follow-up protocols and reduce unnecessary pressure on the healthcare system. #AMBLor is our prognostic risk stratification technology that accurately identifies early-stage, low-risk melanomas. The immunohistochemical assay uses two monoclonal antibodies that recognise the proteins AMBRA1 and loricrin in the epidermis covering the melanoma tumour. If the biomarker proteins are present, the melanoma is at low risk of progression. If one or both proteins are absent, the melanoma is classified as at-risk. Patients stratified as low risk by AMBLor may not require sentinel lymph node biopsy and could benefit from reduced frequency of follow ups. Personalising patient follow-up schedules could: - Reduce overall healthcare costs, by reducing the number of appointments and imaging scans - Enable clinicians to focus on at-risk people - Help alleviate anxiety and the burden of follow-up www.amlo-biosciences.com AMBLor® testing service is provided by Avero Diagnostics as a physician-ordered, laboratory-developed test (LDT).
