AMLo Biosciences found the recently published #DarziReport on the state of the NHS an interesting read.  https://bit.ly/3z9YshL The statistics stating that “more than 1 million people were waiting for community services, including more than 50,000 people waiting for over a year,” are highly concerning. The report also concludes that, “Too many people end up in hospital because too little [funding] is spent in the community. Clinicians’ efforts are wasted on solving process problems, such as ringing around wards to find available beds”. With the call to action to urgently boost productivity in the NHS, we believe that improvements could be made in #melanoma management. With the report calling for more care to be moved from hospitals to the community, our prognostic biomarker #AMBLor could play an important role. AMBLor accurately identifies early-stage melanomas at low risk of progression thereby segmenting patients that could be spared further diagnostic procedures and lengthy follow-up schedules. This can free up clinicians’ time thereby reducing waiting lists. There is also the potential to shift melanoma follow-up to the community setting to make better use of hospital resources. Using AI for good! AMLo Biosciences fully agree with this post and are excited about the possibilities AI can bring to healthcare diagnosis and prognosis. We are working on #AI and #machinelearning improvements to our melanoma prognostic #AMBLor. It already accurately identifies early-stage melanomas at low risk of progression. Including AI and ML will provide additional precision to the 96.5% negative predictive value as well as supporting pathologists in their workload throughput. #melanoma

AMLo Biosciences issued a news release this week announcing that #AMLBLor received its #UKCA mark making it available to NHS and private hospitals. AMBLor is an innovative histopathological biomarker for early-stage #melanoma. It accurately identifies the presence of two prognostic proteins, AMBRA1 and loricrin, in the skin overlying the tumour. The presence of one or both biomarkers is associated with a low risk of progression. This additional prognostic information could help reduce the burden of procedures and appointments on both patients and stretched healthcare resources, and provide a more tailored management approach. With 1 in 5 people in the Netherlands expected to get a form of #skincancer in their lifetime, according to the Netherlands Comprehensive Cancer Organisation, we are pleased to read about a new initiative where beachside restaurants are offering “shots” of sunscreen alongside food and drinks. https://bit.ly/4dYhxCb With a moderate sea climate in the Netherlands, the wind can be cool but the sun’s rays are strong. The research showed visitors come for the sun and the sand, with restaurant terraces a key location where people may get sunburnt. Local authorities, sports clubs and schools have also been installing sun cream dispensers in public locations. Preventing sunburn is the best way to avoid #skincancer and #melanoma. #dermatology #skinaware

Worrying statistics published by the Liberal Democrats last week show that the number of patients on NHS England waiting lists for skin cancer treatment has risen by 25%. Around 3,500 #skincancer patients are waiting longer than the 62-day standard to start treatment, with some left waiting almost a year. https://bit.ly/4cKPuVR Data was collected from 49 NHS hospital trusts across England. Figures show 38,392 patients were on a waiting list to start treatment for skin cancer in the year 2023/24. As stated by Daisy Cooper MP, Health and Social Care spokesperson, “The Liberal Democrats have put forward a comprehensive plan to tackle the crisis in cancer care. We need to ensure that all patients start treatment as soon as possible and the government needs to make recruiting more cancer nurses a top priority.” With UV damage to skin being the main cause of skin cancer, the Lib Dems call for VAT on high-factor sunscreen to be scrapped to make it more affordable and, over time, decrease the number of referrals.
