Thrilled to have made the Exeter 30 Under 30 list, really looking forward to reading this issue in March! #exeter30under30 #entrepreneurship
Just putting the finishing touches to what is my favourite Exeter Tomorrow issue to date - our 30 Under 30! We are shining a spotlight on the business stars of the future … the people who will shape the city for years to come. The criteria was pretty broad. They could be someone who goes the extra mile, is inspirational to others, has overcome adversity or who is just brilliant at what they do. We have been overwhelmed with the response from companies who are keen to celebrate their young prodigies. There is no winner, this is simply a showcase of the next generation of leaders and change makers. We have also recruited under 30s and industry experts to give us their view on what companies need to be putting in place to attract and retain the brightest talent. Out in March. To join the mailing list, DM me. So, well done: Charlie Batty Rebecca Broad Cheryl Bolt Jack Bukin Xenia Coker-Espina Kayla Dunkley Leah Erdbrink Nick Feeney ACA Catherine Hampson Shreya Kallingal Emma Mallett Ruby Newsham Olivia Osborne Jodie Ounsley Jasmine Rennie Kia Pearson Katie Salter Ashleigh Smith Sean Tilson Max Slaney Ellena Steers Rowan Truscott Will Treadwell Ben Hobbs William Anthony Tabitha Metcalf * Some of the finalists are not on LinkedIn And thank you to (among others): Amy Kilburn Rich Stockdale PhD Alastair Banks Natalie Vizard Kerry England Andrea Hodges Michelle Pugh Julie Hawker, MBE, FRSA Emma McLeod Andy Cook Hanna Mepstead Rhi Bates Chris Coward #Exeter #ExeterBusiness #GenZ #YoungTalent #30Under30

What story is being sold about Denver? Ednium started the Denver Deep Dive because we learned that alumni weren’t aware or have access to the systems that help run our city. For nine months, we engaged with the community and learned how Denver's systems are interconnected. The Denver Deep Dive stood out by taking participants to unique city locations: The Denver City & County Building, Comal Heritage (a local food incubator), the CSU Spur Campus, Moline at Stapleton Apartments (an affordable housing community), the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce Building, Manual High School, and Gary Community Ventures. We covered nine topics: 1️⃣ Denver’s History 2️⃣ Education 3️⃣ Economic Development 4️⃣ Housing 5️⃣ Environment 6️⃣ Transportation 7️⃣ Gastronomy 8️⃣ City Politics 9️⃣ Arts & Culture We learned the importance of curiosity and looking beyond the surface of the stories about Denver. Before the modern Denver we know today, indigenous people lived on this land. The phrase, “We did not cross the border, the border crossed us,” reflects how people became Americans overnight by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo after the Mexican-American War. In our city politics session we discovered the feedback gap between community needs and the people whose job it is to address and solve those needs. In our housing session, it was shocking to hear that originally HOAs were created to upkeep the image of a residential community. City residents are legally obligated to pay HOA dues, but overtime HOAs have become a burdensome fee rather than providing tangible value to residents. We also learned that affordable housing can be built to match the quality of other apartment complexes. Thank you to everyone who participated in our first Denver Deep Dive. Your curiosity made this program a success! Thank you to all the guest speakers for sharing valuable lessons. We envision a future where homegrown talent holds leadership roles throughout the city. With the Denver Deep Dive, we are one step closer to that future. #EdniumAlumni #EducationLeadership #HomegrownTalent #HomegrownAwards

Chicago Commons' development team is doing a thing- a BIG thing! It's time to celebrate 130 years of transformative change in and around the city of Chicago. Join us on May 10th for our anniversary gala at Morgan Manufacturing as we honor those who support our mission as well as participants of Chicago Commons' programs who are doing the hard work of providing for the children, families, and seniors in their lives and building strong communities. We are "Honoring the Past and Building the Future." For tickets: https://lnkd.in/gEaj8hiF For fun, what else happened 130 years ago in 1894? 1. The Pullman Strike began. If you don't know the history of this one, please look it up. It's fascinating and very important to labor history. 2. The Tower Bridge in London opened to traffic. 3. Norman Rockwell and Jack Benny are born. 4. William Kennedy Dickson receives a patent for motion picture film in the United States. 5. An extreme national economic depression hit the US in 1894 leading to factories closing and mass unemployment and poverty. 6. Chicago Commons was founded on May 1 by Graham Taylor...but this isn't in Wikipedia's "1894" entry - although I can change that, I suppose.

Growing up in a Mississippi small town of 2,000 people, I constantly heard and felt the narrative of the South being “lesser than” much of the country. My childhood was great. The people around me were great. But, after reading 1,000 rankings that claim your state is the worst in the country, you can start to feel the downward pressure on economic growth for your community and for the people in your life. As I began my career in economic development, I was ready to face the constant battle between staying in the South and trying to build stronger economies at home or following the career and economic opportunities that come with life and work in more developed or growing economies. Thankfully, the tides have turned in the South, as people and businesses continue to flock into our region. And, over the past few years, I began to think… I’M NOT LIVING IN THE POOR OLD SOUTH ANYMORE. When I joined Steadfast City Economic & Community Partners, about a year and a half ago, I was encouraged that Doug Rasmussen and our team shared my view that the Southeastern market was primed for growth and opportunity in the public and private sectors. When Jessica Sawyer Walker joined the team, just a few months after me, and we started gaining some traction in the market, I realized that my shifting thoughts about the South were most definitely true. A young company based in a large metro was looking to grow where there was opportunity, and the South presented that opportunity. After adding Danielle Winningham to the team, last fall, we opened a physical office in Fairhope, Alabama, and as I’ve reflected on what that means… well, it means a lot. It means that I didn’t have to leave the South to find opportunity and career growth—it can follow me where I go. It means that companies recognize the potential of our market—the potential of the people that I love most in this world. And, it means that I don’t have to awkwardly meet with clients in random coffee shops any more. Next week, we will host several of Steadfast’s newest hires in our Fairhope office, as they prepare to realize and tell their own stories of what economic and community development means to them. And, oddly enough, one of them also grew up in my home town of 2,000 people in Mississippi. My takeaway… Communities, economies, and careers can be built wherever you are—even in the Poor Old South.

Combining data and analysis with outreach and listening is so important...
As we begin to put summer behind us, I’m reflecting on conversations I’ve had over the last few months with business and community leaders across New England. One of the most important – and enjoyable! – aspects of my job is spending time listening to people who are directly engaged in different aspects of our regional economy. It’s always a pleasure to learn more about how different organizations and businesses are coming together to tackle local economic issues and improve their communities. I’d like to thank all of those who have welcomed me (most recently in Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island) and shared their perspectives. I look forward to continuing to visit all corners of the Fed’s First District as we work together to promote a vibrant and inclusive economy that works for all.
